Book excerpt: The Mode of Parody is a ground-breaking study proposing a new term to describe a kind of literature that can be seen as early as the works of George Herbert (1593-1633). In the face of his doubt in God's presence, Herbert wrote his poem A Parodie, using serious parody to restore his faith in God's existence. Artists as diverse as Flaubert, Mann, Joyce and Nabokov have used parody to create fiction with religious and mythic dimensions in a time devoid of belief in a cohesive world order. The opening chapter develops the author's concept of parody as a mode of serious creation through a dialogue between a dancer and a writer. He then explores in subsequent chapters the way the mode of parody functions in the works of Herbert, Mann, Flaubert, Joyce and Nabokov. The final chapter sees the dancer reappear, and ask the writer about the sort of art that may lie on the other side of the mode of parody. That answer can emerge only after a journey through works of utmost complexity in the mode of parody.

They pay tribute to its long and varied tradition, covering examples of parodic practice from the Middle Ages to the present day and dealing with English, American, postcolonial, Austrian, and German parodies. The author handles this diversity by classifying parody according to its objects of imitation and specifying three major parodic kinds: parody directed at texts and personal styles, parody directed at genre, and parody directed at discourse. The book argues that different literary-historical periods in Britain have witnessed the prevalence of different kinds of parody and investigates the reasons underlying this phenomenon. All periods from the Middle Ages to the present are considered in this regard, but a special significance is given to the postmodern age, where parody has become a widely produced literary form. The book contends further that postmodern parody is primarily discourse parody - a phenomenon which can be explained through the major concerns of postmodernism as a movement. In addition to situating parody and its kinds in a historical context, this book engages in a detailed analysis of parody in the postmodern age, preparing the ground for making an informed assessment of the direction parody and its kinds may take in the near future.
