Book excerpt: The first pew in the front of the church, historically called the Moaning Bench, has served as a place of comfort for those in mourning; and a place of refuge for those seeking forgiveness and redemption. During these critical times it has been a sacred place where troubled souls can whisper their confessions and beseech repentance through their heartfelt cries. It is in this space that lost souls mourn, cry for repentance, and plea for salvation. "Meet Me at the Moaning Bench," transports the reader directly to the front of the church and most importantly, before God. At a time when there is heightened attention on the relevance of spiritualism and divinity, Timid Masses through his poetry, crafts a masterful argument for the necessity of both. Each poem represents the timeless testimony of a personal journey in search of redemption and salvation. A must read for anyone struggling with the complex triad of hope, faith and love.

Book excerpt: An unforgettable look at an obscure part of the deep south just before the dawning of the Civil Rights movement and the turbulent 1960s would forever change it forever. A unique blend of humor, pathos, and bitter reality throws a harsh and revealing light on this this strange time and the people who were a part of it. Examine a place where the past is never past, and history hangs over the hot dirt roads and swamps like a morning mist. Examine a now forgotten world where men could die over a load of wet cotton, a cock fight, a fence line, a missing hog, or a romantic promise not kept. A place where the past lies like a rattlesnake under a bush waiting to strike. A world where little boys had hookworms and old black men sold Bolita. A world where a dream book could tell the future and a root doctor could cure an illness or fix a romance gone bad. It is a strange and mysterious world, full of fear and superstitions, strange people and strange customs. It is a world where black magic and old time religion go hand in hand. A world of tobacco fields and outhouses, pulpwood and moonshine stills, juke joints and whore houses. In the fall of 1959, a small group of frightened young high school boys gather in the late afternoon twilight to become a part of their local chapter of the Future Farmers of America. However, this was to be much more than a simple initiation. This was to become more than just one more school function. This night would change all their lives as they have to decide what price was too much to pay for being one of The Ag Boys.

Book excerpt: Domestic Violence is one problem; however, it is handled and resolved in many different ways by its many different victims in a manner such that those victims may become survivors. How one victim overcomes may be totally different from how the next victim becomes a survivor. I know this to be true because of my story and my survival of Domestic Violence. This is my story, and this is how it happened for me and as I stated before, it will not be the same for everyone. Each journey is separate and has different routes and measures. I wrote this book to inform others of the cycle of Domestic Violence, and to bring about awareness to those who may be oblivious of this dark place and may have somehow unfortunately found themselves in it. It is extremely regrettable that so many individuals and families experience this tragedy and accept it as normal because they have not properly identified it as Domestic Violence. This book may also inspire others who may have a deep desire to advocate for victims who are living the nightmare of Domestic Violence. My hope is that this book will be a beacon to individuals who may be experiencing situations that are uncomfortable, dangerous, or violent to them or to their children and that they will quickly identify this problem and get assistance in getting out and getting out safely with their lives intact because sadly there are so many who don’t. If you or someone you know are experiencing Domestic Violence, please get help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at: (800) 779-7233 or TTY (800) 787-3224.

Book What s In The Water

Download or read book What s In The Water written by Velma Benson Wilson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people, one’s mother is the first person they ever form a lifelong bond with. She is the source of life and nourishment, love and compassion, and the person who provides the foundation for an individual’s worldview and core values. Author and veteran sociologist Velma Benson-Wilson pays tribute to her mother, a remarkable woman born Fannie Bradley, through a book titled, What’s In The Water? Imagine a mother of seventeen living children, all single births and the majority born during the tumultuous times of the 1950s and 60s in rural Mississippi. How did she balance and cope with their spiritual, educational, financial and overall upbringing to insure that all became productive members of this society? Fannie Bradley had tenacious faith, resilience, and perseverance in overcoming adversities and pain that would have made most an indignant human being. Fannie's mother was mentally retarded; she had no stable father figure or family, and an elementary education. Although she only lived to be 57 years of age, Fannie's legacy of love and parental principles are indelible in each of her living seventeen offspring. Book Event: I have a book signing scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2012 form 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon at Jackson Madison County Library, Jackson, Tennessee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the very first page of My Story His Glory, readers quickly connect with the colorful characters of this engaging work by first time author, Gwen Lewis. We are quickly introduced to the main character of the story, a little girl born into poverty and inequality. We learn that she grew up during a time when all the social institutions were segregated, and Jim Crow laws prevailed. She is the ninth of ten children born to Ruth and Ab Mason. Demoralized by bigotry and hatred, her parents tried to instill a sense of pride and goodness into their children. Though neither of her parents were formally educated, they championed education as the vehicle to independence and a better way of life for their children. The book reveals intimate details about her impoverished home life in an honest, unpretentious way. Life was sometimes hard, but there were also times of contentment and joy. As we continue to follow her story, we also see ourselves in the struggles she faced when she eagerly left home for college. Choosing to attend the historic Tuskegee Institute located forty miles from where she grew up was a point of great pride for her.We witness the grace and goodness of God and how he never left her alone. It is interesting as well as inspiring to witness the love and compassion of God as he carried her when she didnaEUR(tm)t even know he was there. Later she would learn to recognize his gentle hand. We laugh at her childhood antics, cry with her as she painfully recalls personal losses, and rejoice with her as she triumphs over her enemies! After reading My Story His Glory we walk away inspired, with a desire to know this ever-present God she affectionately calls Father.

Book excerpt: "Focusing primarily, though not exclusively, on the southeastern United States, the book examines works ranging from James Hampton's well-known Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly (now part of the Smithsonian collection), to several elaborately decorated yards and gardens, to smaller-scale acts of commemoration, protection, and witness. The authors show how the artful arrangement and adornment of everyday objects and plants express both the makers' own experiences and concerns and a number of rich and sustaining cultural traditions. They identify a "lexicon" of material signs that are frequently and consistently used in African American culture and art and then show how such elements have been used in various individual works and what they mean to the practitioners themselves."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: One of The New York Times' 100 Notable Books of 2017 “A pinball machine zinging with sharp dialogue, breathtaking plot twists and naughty humor... McBride at his brave and joyous best.” —New York Times Book Review From the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Lord Bird, winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction, Deacon King Kong, and Kill 'Em and Leave, a James Brown biography. The stories in Five-Carat Soul—none of them ever published before—spring from the place where identity, humanity, and history converge. They’re funny and poignant, insightful and unpredictable, imaginative and authentic—all told with McBride’s unrivaled storytelling skill and meticulous eye for character and detail. McBride explores the ways we learn from the world and the people around us. An antiques dealer discovers that a legendary toy commissioned by Civil War General Robert E. Lee now sits in the home of a black minister in Queens. Five strangers find themselves thrown together and face unexpected judgment. An American president draws inspiration from a conversation he overhears in a stable. And members of The Five-Carat Soul Bottom Bone Band recount stories from their own messy and hilarious lives. As McBride did in his National Book award-winning The Good Lord Bird and his bestselling The Color of Water, he writes with humor and insight about how we struggle to understand who we are in a world we don’t fully comprehend. The result is a surprising, perceptive, and evocative collection of stories that is also a moving exploration of our human condition.

Book excerpt: Waterford Ireland, 1876, sixteen year old Seamus O’Toule escapes a demeaning judicial order when he is selected to fill a request from the Colonial Governor of NSW to provide a bonded servant for a Scottish pastoral family. Arthur and Lilly Evans wish to train a boy to do the work of the son they lost in a colonial war. His good fortune will be like no other and he returns the love given him by Arthur and Lilly. In the gold-fields district that will be his new home, the young man will enjoy strong friendships, especially among people who are living under the perverted authority of powerful Senior Constable Whithers. One such friend will be Doctor Harold Cheltam, the only man who knows the truth about Whithers’ murder of his former police senior. They must watch each other’s backs, but they are people who enjoy a great gift for humour that adds a special quality to their story. Whithers will have Dr. Harold tried for a murder that he could not have committed and the Doctor’s daughter sails from London to be with him. Seamus is devising plans to upset the jury’s findings. The trial might have ended badly for Dr.Harold but for the exposure of several jurors who knew more about the murder than the police did. One juror would have a photo of ‘his spirit’ in the newspaper. The court room becomes free-for-all with jurors fighting each other and Seamus. Hellena is arrested for pushing a police officer down the steps of the gallery. The trial fails. Whithers and his cronies were also active with a fraudulent solicitor Elmo Carlton to defraud Seamus estate inherited from his adoptive Scotish parents. New friendships are emerging between Hellena and Seamus, and her English chaperone Jesse who is in love with the retiring sea captain. There will be several weddings and great humor when Seamus’ brothers arrive to be ‘encultured’ into new surroundings. But Whithers has not given up. He must discredit the doctor or have him killed in a violent home invasion that captures the whole cast of the story with painful outcomes for some. Whithers tries again and again and plots the kidnap of Dr Harold’s daughter Hellena, by this time Seamus’ love of his life. But the constable's luck is failing him and his desperate attempts lead to his downfall and great violence. Five little stories meld into the main stream of the novel giving it a wide scope for character development, for drama and humour. Chaperone, Jesse, will marry her sea Captain. The publican's daughter has a problem with one of Seamus' love sick brothers in a lively sequence of great humour. Seamus friendship with Hellena must be upset by wealthy Constance McAlistar, providing a lively story in its own right. But Seamus now has a badly disabled brother who is more strain on the emotions than most women would choose, except of course, the ever loving Hellena. Will she be rewarded for her love and devotion?
