  • Author : Andrew E. Kersten
  • Publisher : NYU Press

Download or read book Reframing Randolph written by Andrew E. Kersten and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was a household name. As president of the all-black Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), he was an embodiment of America’s multifaceted radical tradition, a leading spokesman for Black America, and a potent symbol of trade unionism and civil rights agitation for nearly half a century. But with the dissolution of the BSCP in the 1970s, the assaults waged against organized labor in the 1980s, and the overall silencing of labor history in U.S. popular discourse, he has been largely forgotten among large segments of the general public before whom he once loomed so large. Historians, however, have not only continued to focus on Randolph himself, but his role (either direct, or via his legacy) in a wide range of social, political, cultural, and even religious milieu and movements. The authors of Reframing Randolph have taken Randolph’s dusty portrait down from the wall to reexamine and reframe it, allowing scholars to regard him in new, and often competing, lights. This collection of essays gathers, for the very first time, many genres of perspectives on Randolph. Featuring both established and emergent intellectual voices, this project seeks to avoid both hagiography and blanket condemnation alike. The contributors represent the diverse ways that historians have approached the importance of his long and complex career in the main political, social, and cultural currents of twentieth-century African American specifically, and twentieth-century U.S. history overall. The central goal of Reframing Randolph is to achieve a combination of synthetic and critical reappraisal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying goal of today's focus on service learning is helping children experience joy in community service - in cooperating, helping, caring, and demonstrating civic responsibility - while engaging them in learning. It is also the main point of this incredibly practical new book. Truly a hands-on guide to every aspect of implementing "service learning", from organizing the very first project to building school/community partnerships, this resource provides the means to improving education for children of all ages. In it are over 400 involving activities and projects. Some of the projects can be completed in a short time, while others require significant time commitments. All are curriculum-related; drawn from the experiences of actual teachers around the country; and serve to build self-esteem, promote critical thinking skills, and enhance academic, social, and psychological development. For teachers and administrators working with children from kindergarten through junior high school and for parents, community agencies, and educators on all levels. Specific details show how to plan, select, and design projects of varying duration, and thorough guidelines explain how to implement the project. Separate chapters on community service with senior citizens, the homeless, multicultural groups, special children, and the environment provide what's needed to incorporate activities on these pertinent topics.

Martin Rising is a stunning, poetic presentation of the final months of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life—told in a rich embroidery of visions, color, musical cadence, deep emotion, and multiple layers of meaning. Against a backdrop of the sanitation workers’ strike in Memphis, Tennessee, the book builds to its rousing crescendo as King delivers his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech—where his life’s commitment to peaceful activism and his dream of equality ascend to their highest peak. The Pinkneys’ powerful and spiritual look at King’s legacy celebrates the courage and moral conviction of a man who changed the course of history forever. Book Confronting Jim Crow

Download or read book Confronting Jim Crow written by Robert Cohen and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the onset of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd, America has grappled with its racial history, leading to the removal of statues and other markers commemorating pro-slavery sympathizers and segregationists from public spaces. Some of these white supremacist statues had stood on or near college and university campuses since the Jim Crow era, symbolizing the reluctance of American higher education to confront its racist past. In Confronting Jim Crow, Robert Cohen explores the University of Georgia's long history of racism and the struggle to overcome it, shedding light on white Georgia's historical amnesia concerning the university's role in sustaining the Jim Crow system. By extending the historical analysis beyond the desegregation crisis of 1961, Cohen unveils UGA's deep-rooted anti-Black stance preceding formal desegregation efforts. Through the lens of Black and white student, faculty, and administration perspectives, this book exposes the enduring impact of Jim Crow and its lingering effects on campus integration.
