Balbir Sin SambyalThe Mists of Simla is a captivating story, often achingly funny, full of narrow escapes and some tears, as one young man strides out onto the cricket field of adult life. The year is 1962, and young cricket-player Rahul Kapoor has just passed his final exam to enter college in Simla, in the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas. Built by the English as their summer playground, Simla still has its grand hotels, faded now, echoing with sounds of the foxtrot and haunted by memsahibs in ballgowns.Since Partition in 1947, Simla society has changed, and the students are building a new India. Rahul swiftly becomes a key player on the Simla College scene; as he sets off on his rites of passage, he finds the way strewn with beautiful women. Book excerpt: From award-winning author, Liz Harris, comes an emotional tale of love and revenge set in Simla, the summer capital of the British Raj, which lies in the shadow of the Himalayas. Simla, 1932 Life-long friends, Lilian Hunt and Daisy Chatsworth, whose fathers work for the British government in India, have travelled north with their families from Delhi to Simla, eagerly anticipating a summer of parties, dances and, dare they hope, romance. Frederick, Lilian's ambitious father, is determined that Lilian should marry Eric, the son of his superior, Cecil Stanford, as that is what Cecil wants. Eric, however, against his father's clearly expressed wishes, is drawn to Daisy. But Cecil objects to Eric marrying a Chatsworth, though no one knows why. Lilian decides to take matters into her hands, and help her friend to win the man she loves. Unknown to Frederick, he has an enemy in Simla, and soon after his arrival, that enemy makes his presence felt. Feeling increasingly threatened, Frederick asks a new colleague, Jack Leighton, to stay close to Lilian and Daisy without them realising he's there to protect them. Jack has taken an instant dislike to Lilian but, reluctantly, he agrees. But the enemy is watching... Simla Mist, an unforgettably powerful story of love and revenge, is perfect for readers of Santa Montefiore, Dinah Jefferies, Kristin Hannah, Fiona Valpy and Rosie Thomas.

Book Christianity and Belonging in Shimla North India

Download or read book Christianity and Belonging in Shimla North India written by Jonathan Miles-Watson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the material religion of contemporary Shimla, a vibrant postcolonial city, famed for its colonial heritage, set against the backdrop of the North-Western Himalayas. Jonathan Miles-Watson demonstrates that this landscape is able to peacefully reconcile the apparent tensions of faith, heritage and identity in a way that unseats traditional theories of religion, politics and heritage. It presents a mystery that is written in space through time; the key to unlocking this mystery lies in clear view, at the city's heart, in the contemporary material religion that surrounds nominally Christian sacred sites. Although the material religion centres on landscapes that are identifiable as Christian, the book demonstrates that Hindus, atheists and Sikhs all have a role to play in the mutually constitutive relations that lie at the centre of these knots of sacred entanglement. This book builds upon over a decade of research to present an ethnographic account of devotional practices that speaks to contemporary developments in both the anthropology of Christianity and material religion. Through this exploration the book answers the mystery of Shimla's postcolonial harmony, while complicating established theories in the anthropology of religion, postcolonial studies, mythography, heritage studies and material culture.

Book excerpt: This book would have been completed earlier but for events that disrupted millions of lives across India, including those of journalists : the demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya, by a Hindu mob on 6 December 1992 and the communal riots that followed across the country. In January 1993, the selective massacres of Muslims at Bombay and the devastating revenge bomb blasts there two months later led to extensive travelling and reporting for the New York Times. In addition, there was 'normal reporting' : the Punjab, environmental, economic and political issues such as the billion dollar scam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanjeev Bansal’s exquisite poems are epistles to the past, reflections upon the future and heartbreaking meditations upon the metaphysics of daily transcendence. One of the most subtly imaginative poets, Bansal bravely transcribes his love for the hilly terrains of Shimla into the charged intersections of love and rejection, nature and religion, loss and renewal. His poems are lucid snapshots developed in a subtle amalgam of memory and intuition. Lyrical and linguistically inventive and yet faithful to poesy of European gloom, Bansal investigates complex personal history, family and romantic love in carefully sculpted lines, thereby making his poetry an odyssey at once metaphorically and emphatically real.
