And do you believe that the Spirit of the Holy God dwells in such mere inanimate substances?" The Armenians inquired of the Priest, "Does the liturgy contain any such doctrine?" To which he replied, "I do not know." Thereupon with a smile of contempt they said, "Are not you our priest? Is it not your business to teach us? If you do not know our liturgy, who does?" Our brother adds that a considerable number of Turks are desirous to obtain, for private reading, copies of the entire Scriptures in Turkish; and that about twenty Russians, now at Sivas, are calling for copies of the New Testament in the Russian and Bulgarian languages. In view of these facts, Mr. Parsons says: "Such things show beyond all question that the truth as it is in Jesus is making progress in the city of Sivas. Light has sprung up amidst gross moral darkness, and is steadily spreading far and wide among these fertile vales and on these rugged mountains. Those who have hitherto deemed themselves secure in the strong-holds of Satan, are beginning to have a sense of danger which, we hope and pray, will drive them to the Lord Jesus Christ, the only hope set before them. There can be little doubt, that the number is already very large, and rapidly increasing, of those who, whilst holding a nominal connection with the old Armenians, are convinced that their church must undergo a thorough reformation both in faith and practice, or be no longer considered a church of Christ." The number reported as admitted to the church during the year which preceded the annual meeting, was 1,789. Letters have also been received from Messrs. Alexander and Hunt, who have charge of the seminary at Lahainaluna. They state that God has graciously smiled upon that institution. Mr. Alexander says, under date of November 12, "Many of our pupils have manifested deep concern for their souls7 salvation; and several give pleasing evidence that they have found the pearl of great price. Among the latter are some of the most promising young men in the nation." He also writes, "Our theological class has eight members, three of whom I hope will be licensed to preach next spring." From a letter of Mr. Lowell Smith, dated Honolulu, November 28, the following extract is taken: The last two or three years have been a time to try men's souls in Honolulu. Still a goodly number of the professed followers of Christ have stood firm, and evinced an attachment to his cause which the political revolutions have not been able to undermine. As soldiers of the cross they have not deserted their posts, but have attended regularly to the duties of the sanctuary, the weekly prayer meetings, church meetings, and the monthly concert, and have been ready unto every good work. But this cannot be said of all. Some have been unstable as the wind, and have gone after the Beast and False Prophet. Some have returned to a species of idolatry; others have become atheistical, and have forsaken even the form of godliness. Mr. Blodget has devoted most of his time, since he has been at Shanghai, to the acquisition of the lattguage which he expects to employ in proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Christ. He is now able, however, to address the Chinese in their own tongue with some satisfaction; and he is hoping to become more and more skillful and effective as a preacher of the Word. The present letter contains a very good description of his plans and labors; and the statement will introduce us to the earlier stages of missionary life in China. Preaching Places. Since the date of my last letter, my efforts among the people have begun to assume a more definite form and greater regularity. At first I conversed with individuals, and talked, as well as I could, to groups in the hamlets near our residence. I also visited neighboring villages on several occasions, to distribute books, and carry my message. In the month of November, I began to preach regularly on the Sabbath in a schoolroom, just then completed on our mission lot.
