Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missing Link in Modern Spiritualism IT is not that the history of Spiritual Manifestations in this century and country has not again and again been written, nor that a library of the Splendid literature of Spiritualism - narrative, philosophical, and religious - does not already exist, that I have deemed it a duty to give this history to the world. It happens that nobody else possesses - both in vivid per sonal recollections and in stores of documentary material the means and the data necessary for the task of giving a correct account of the initiation of the movement known as Modern Spiritualism; and the now hastening lapse of years gives warning that if to place it on record is a duty - as many friends have often urged - it is a duty not to be much longer delayed. Duesler ascertained that he was murdered in the east bed-room about five years ago, and that the murder was committed by a Mr. ——, on a Tuesday night, at twelve o’clock; that he was murdered by having his throat cut with a butcher knife; that the body was taken down cellar; that it was not buried until the next night; that it was taken through the buttery, down the stairway, and that it was buried ten feet below the surface of the ground. ...I told him to place himself in different parts of the cellar, and as he did so I asked the question if a person was over the place where it was buried, and I got no answer until he stood over a certain place in the cellar, when it rapped.

Everything thrown at him he pitched back to them, until a brass candlestick was thrown at him, cutting his lip. This quite enraged him. He pronounced a solemn malediction, and, throwing himself on the bed, vowed he would have nothing more to do with "fiendish Spirits." He was not long permitted to remain in quiet there. They commenced at his bedstead and deliberately razed it to the floor, leaving the head-board in one place, the foot-board in another, the two sides at angles, and the bed-clothes scattered about the room. He was left lying on his mattress, and for a moment there was silence; after which some slight movements were heard in the "green room." I had stowed a large number of balls of carpet-rags in an old chest standing on the floor, with two trunks and several other articles on the top of it. It seemed but the work of a moment for them to get at the carpet-balls, which came flying at us from every direction, hitting us in the same place every time. They took us for their target, and threw with the skill of an archer. Darkness made no difference with them, and if either of us attempted to remonstrate against such violence, they would instantly give the remonstrant the benefit of a ball.[...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism: The Open Door to the Unseen Universe: Being Thirty Years of Personal Observation and Experience Concerning Intercourse Between the Material and Spiritual Worlds N 0 other movement which has originated during the past sixty years has exerted so powerful an influence upon contemporary thought as modern Spiritualism has done. No man within the ranks of British Spiritualists can better tell the story of its growth in these islands during the past thirty years than the writer of the following pages; few could tell it as well. Having been intimately associated with him during the period covered by his pen, there is no question in my mind as to the accuracy of his statements, while their illuminating lucidity leaves nothing to be desired. Personal experience in the matters detailed in the ensuing chapters is necessary for correct judgment. My friend possesses such experience, and speaks, con sequently, as one having authority. Himself a business man of repute in his great city, Glasgow, his words are weighty and full worthy of respect. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Modern Spiritualism I am well aware that my scientific friends are some what puzzled to account for what they consider to be my delusion, and believe that it has injuriously affected what ever power I may have once possessed of dealing with the philosophy of Natural History. One of them - Mr. Anton Dohrn - has expressed this plainly. I am informed that, in an article entitled Englische Kritiker und Anti Kritiker des Darwinismus, published in 1861, he has put forth the opinion that Spiritualism and Natural Selection are incompatible, and that my divergence from the views of Mr. Darwin arises from my belief in Spiritualism. He also supposes that in accepting the spiritual doctrines I have been to some extent influenced by clerical and reli gions prejudice. As Mr. Dohrn's views may be those of other scientific friends, I may perhaps be excused for entering into some personal details in reply. Download or read book Modern Spiritualism Vol 1 of 2 written by Frank Podmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Spiritualism, Vol. 1 of 2: A History and a Criticism To Dr. R. Hodgson also I owe much. Alike by natural endowment and by his unrivalled experience, Dr. Hodgson is probably better qualified than any living person to deal critically with the history of Spiritualism; nor did I venture to set about the present work until I had ascertained that he was not prepared to undertake the task himself. I had hoped, however, that he would have been able to contribute to the book his own version of his investigations in slate writing, and an account of the Eusapia seances, with his own criticisms. Pressure of other work prevented the fulfilment of this scheme but my own account of these matters is based, as the reader will see, almost exclusively on Dr. Hodgson's writings, supplemented by his criticisms and suggestions on the completed chapters. Not to Dr. Hodgson alone, but also to the late Frederic Myers, I, in common with all others who are engaged on the investigation of these obscure and widely neglected problems, am indebted not only for much of the material used, but for the means of using it. Book Through a Glass Darkly

Download or read book Through a Glass Darkly written by Stefan Bechtel and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 ASJA Award-Winner in the Biography/History Category Is it possible to make direct contact with the dead? Do the departed seek to make contact with us? The conviction that both things are true was the cornerstone of spiritualism, a kind of do-it-yourself religion that swept the Western world from the 1850s to the 1930s. Prominent artists and poets, prime ministers and scientists, all joined hands around the séance table. But the movement's most famous spokesman by far was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose public quarrels with Houdini over the truth of spiritualism made headlines across the country. Known to the world as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle had undergone what many considered an enigmatic transformation, turning his back on the hyper-rational Holmes and plunging into the supernatural. What was it that convinced a brilliant man, the creator of the great exemplar of cold, objective thought, that there was a reality beyond reality? Though most modern sources make Conan Doyle out to be a kindly but credulous old fool, and though the spiritualist era was rife with fraud, Stefan Bechtel and Laurence Roy Stains take a closer look. They reexamine the old records of trance mediums and séances, and they discover that what Conan Doyle and his colleagues uncovered is as difficult to dismiss now as it was then.

This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great Discussion of Modern Spiritualism, Between Prof. J. Stanley Grimes and Leo Miller, Esq., At the Melodeon, Boston, Every Evening During the Second Week in March, 1860 I do not wish to be understood as presenting this, here, as an argument upon the question, but, rather, to show the respectable character of the subject which is to engage your attention, and its paramount claims upon every person who starts out upon its investigation. I am aware that Spiritualism, like every other newly developed truth, has met with the most determined opposition. It has been assailed on every side, without mercy, and, too men, the weapons of its opponents have been only ridicule, glaring misrepresentation, and vulgar-minded contempt. But it is too late in the day to use such weapons as these. Spiritualism has become so deeply entrenched in the hearts of thousands that such arguments can no longer influence the wise and intelligent, -none but the ignorant, the prejudiced, and the dishonest. In holding this discussion, I expect to meet, from my friend, a determined opposition; From his long years of experience in the realms of mental philosophy, he is competent to explode Spiritualism, if such a thing be possible. And I would here say to the audience, that should my friend find it necessary to evade my arguments or my facts should he find it necessary to cavil, or throw dust in your eyes, - understand it is not for the want of' ability to meet them, or want of information, but is owing altogether' b' the untenable position he has assumed. Download or read book Spiritualism Answered by Science Classic Reprint written by Edward William Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism Answered by Science The crucial tests applied by the skill and science of Mr. Crookes confirmed the results of a series of other experiments, conducted with care and caution, which had been instituted for the purpose of investigating if any and what of the alleged phenomena were real and, if real, whether they are physical or spiritual, natural or super natural. The conclusion from that patient inquiry has been, that many of the alleged phenomena are real, though some are delusions and others impostures that the Power dignified by the title of Spiritual, because attributed to the presence and action of spirits of the dead, is in fact a Psychic Force proceeding from the human structure and directed by the human intelligence.
