Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missal of St. Augustine's Abbey Canterbury: With Excerpts From the Antiphonary and Lectionary of the Same Monastery, Edited With an Introductory Monograph, From a Manuscript in the Library, of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge When, therefore, at the instance of my friend, the Reverend S. S. Lewis, at that time and until his death the Librarian of Corpus Christi College, I spent part of the Long Vacation of 1886 at Cambridge, it was with unqualified pleasure that I availed myself of permission to tran scribe and work on a book of which I already knew a little, but was anxious to know much more. My study of the document began in the autumn of the following year, but, with the exception of a few weeks, was intermitted from the Christmas of 1889 to the summer of 1892, when some portions of the following Introduction first fell into their present form. The order, however, in which the Missal yielded up its several items of evidence was not that now given to the successive divisions of the Introduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominican life is a service of Wisdom. Such is the teaching of the Italian Dominican Father Raymund Spiazzi. Following the principles of Thomas Aquinas, and drawing upon other Dominican saints as well, Father Spiazzi explains his teaching over the course of many short conferences. Saint Dominic received the grace of a special love and service of wisdom and a charism to "communicate wisdom with joy." Saint Dominic also organized a form of religious life--communal, liturgical, and apostolic--so that others might share in the same grace, charism, and service. The whole form of life established by Saint Dominic for his order has its raison d'etre in the love and service of truth--the incarnate wisdom. The followers of Saint Dominic are called to cultivate wisdom in all of its forms--philosophical, theological, and mystical. The regular life of prayer and study, liturgy and fraternity cultivates the manifold wisdom of God in our souls. Father Spiazzi illuminates how. He discusses the theological virtues, intellectual and moral virtues, the gifts and fruits of the Spirit, the Beatitudes, the sacraments, and much more. All of the elements of Dominican life together give harmonious unity to the mind and the interior life by the grace of the Holy Spirit. Contemplative activity informs our actions, and the Holy Spirit also makes us effective servants, friends, lovers, spouses, worshipers, preachers, and teachers of the eternal wisdom of God. Christ, wisdom, and eternal truth, become the reason for living and working for the salvation of souls.

Book The Cambridge History of the Book in Britain Volume 1 c 400 1100

Download or read book The Cambridge History of the Book in Britain Volume 1 c 400 1100 written by Richard Gameson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive survey of the history of the book in Britain from Roman through Anglo-Saxon to early Norman times. The expert contributions explore the physical form of books, including their codicology, script and decoration; examine the circulation and exchange of manuscripts and texts between England, Ireland, the Celtic realms and the Continent; discuss the production, presentation and use of different classes of texts, ranging from fine service books to functional schoolbooks; and evaluate the libraries that can be associated with particular individuals and institutions. The result is an authoritative account of the first millennium of the history of books, manuscript-making and literary culture in Britain which, intimately linked to its cultural contexts, sheds vital light on broader patterns of political, ecclesiastical and cultural history extending from the period of the Vindolanda writing tablets through the age of Bede and Alcuin to the time of the Domesday Book.
