Losing the concept of sin will ultimately marginalize the role of the church and, especially, the role of preaching in society. When the comprehensive importance of sin is recovered in a preaching ministry, the role of preaching takes on a whole new level of significance. Anemic sermons that only address superficial needs will be rejected. The Mischief of Sin seeks to inspire in a new generation of preachers a courage to call sin what it is and to recover a new-found confidence in the gospel, which is the only remedy to man's sick condition.

As pointed out in the pages in our Introduction to Exodus each book in the Bible has a prominent and dominant theme which, as such, is peculiar to itself, around which everything is made to center and of which all the details are but the amplification. What that leading subject may be, we should make it our business to prayerfully and diligently ascertain. This can best be discovered by reading and re-reading the book under review, noting carefully any particular feature or expression which occurs frequently in it-such as "under the sun" in Ecclesiastes or "the righteousness of God" in Romans. "The book of Joshua records one of the most interesting and important portions of Israel's history. It treats of the period of their estatement as a nation, of which Genesis was prophetic and the rest of the Pentateuch immediately preparatory. The books of Moses would be imperfect without this one: as it is the capstone of them, so it is the foundation of those which follow. Omit Joshua and there is a gap left in the sacred history which nothing could supply. Without it what proceeds would be incomprehensible and what follows unexplained. The sacred writer was directed to fill that gap by narrating the conquest and apportionment of the Promised Land. Thus this book may be contemplated from two distinct but closely related standpoints: first as the end of Israel's trials and wanderings in the wilderness, and second as the beginning of their new life in the land. It is that twofold viewpoint which supplies the clue to its spiritual interpretation, as it alone solves the problem which so many have found puzzling in this book." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

To attempt to understand Western civilization apart from the impact of Biblical law within it and upon it is to seek a fictitious history and to reject twenty centuries and their progress. The Institutes of Biblical Law has as its purpose a reversal of the present trend. it is called "Institutes" in the older meaning of the that word, i.e., fundamental principles, here of law, because it is intended as a beginning, as an instituting consideration of that law which must govern society, and which shall govern society under God. To understand Biblical law, it is necessary to understand also certain basic characteristics of that law. In it, certain broad premises or principles are declared. These are declarations of basic law. The Ten Commandments give us such declarations. A second characteristics of Biblical law, is that the major portion of the law is case law, i.e., the illustration of the basic principle in terms of specific cases. These specific cases are often illustrations of the extent of the application of the law; that is, by citing a minimal type of case, the necessary jurisdictions of the law are revealed. The law, then, asserts principles and cites cases to develop the implications of those principles, with is purpose and direction the restitution of God's order.

In recent times, the controversy has been rekindled by at least three significant developments: (1) Numerous doctoral dissertations and articles have been written by Sunday keeping scholars who argue for the abrogation of the Sabbath in the New Testament and for the apostolic origin of Sunday. (2) The abandonment of the Sabbath promoted by former Sabbatarian organizations like the Worldwide Church of God and other independent congregations. These former Sabbatarian Christians who in the past championed the observance of the Sabbath, now reject the day as a Mosaic, Old Covenant ordinance, no longer binding upon "New Covenant" Christians. (3) The newly released Pastoral Letter Dies Domini of Pope John Paul II that calls for a revival of Sunday observance. Dies Domini is a historical document of enormous significance because the Pope grounds the moral obligation of Sunday observance in the Sabbath Commandment itself, by making Sunday the embodiment and "full expression" of the Sabbath. By making Sunday observance a moral imperative rooted in the Decalogue, the Pope calls upon all Christians to "strive to ensure that civil legislation respects their duty to keep Sunday holy."
