Book excerpt: A “marvelous history”* of medieval Europe, from the bubonic plague and the Papal Schism to the Hundred Years’ War, by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Guns of August *Lawrence Wright, author of The End of October, in The Wall Street Journal The fourteenth century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering age of crusades, cathedrals, and chivalry; on the other, a world plunged into chaos and spiritual agony. In this revelatory work, Barbara W. Tuchman examines not only the great rhythms of history but the grain and texture of domestic life: what childhood was like; what marriage meant; how money, taxes, and war dominated the lives of serf, noble, and clergy alike. Granting her subjects their loyalties, treacheries, and guilty passions, Tuchman re-creates the lives of proud cardinals, university scholars, grocers and clerks, saints and mystics, lawyers and mercenaries, and, dominating all, the knight—in all his valor and “furious follies,” a “terrible worm in an iron cocoon.” Praise for A Distant Mirror “Beautifully written, careful and thorough in its scholarship . . . What Ms. Tuchman does superbly is to tell how it was. . . . No one has ever done this better.”—The New York Review of Books “A beautiful, extraordinary book . . . Tuchman at the top of her powers . . . She has done nothing finer.”—The Wall Street Journal “Wise, witty, and wonderful . . . a great book, in a great historical tradition.”—Commentary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its invention by Renaissance humanists, the myth of the “Middle Ages” has held a uniquely important place in the Western historical imagination. Whether envisioned as an era of lost simplicity or a barbaric nightmare, the medieval past has always served as a mirror for modernity. This book gives an eye-opening account of the ways various political and intellectual projects—from nationalism to the discipline of anthropology—have appropriated the Middle Ages for their own ends. Deploying an interdisciplinary toolkit, author K. Patrick Fazioli grounds his analysis in contemporary struggles over power and identity in the Eastern Alps, while also considering the broader implications for scholarly research and public memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzlingly original and ambitious book on the history of female self-portraiture by one of today's most well-respected art critics. Her story weaves in and out of time and place. She's Frida Kahlo, Loïs Mailou Jones and Amrita Sher-Gil en route to Mexico City, Paris or Bombay. She's Suzanne Valadon and Gwen John, craving city lights, the sea and solitude; she's Artemisia Gentileschi striding through the streets of Naples and Paula Modersohn-Becker in Worpswede. She's haunting museums in her paint-stained dress, scrutinising how El Greco or Titian or Van Dyck or Cézanne solved the problems that she too is facing. She's railing against her corsets, her chaperones, her husband and her brothers; she's hammering on doors, dreaming in her bedroom, working day and night in her studio. Despite the immense hurdles that have been placed in her way, she sits at her easel, picks up a mirror and paints a self-portrait because, as a subject, she is always available. Until the twentieth century, art history was, in the main, written by white men who tended to write about other white men. The idea that women in the West have always made art was rarely cited as a possibility. Yet they have - and, of course, continue to do so - often against tremendous odds, from laws and religion to the pressures of family and public disapproval. In The Mirror and the Palette, Jennifer Higgie introduces us to a cross-section of women artists who embody the fact that there is more than one way to understand our planet, more than one way to live in it and more than one way to make art about it. Spanning 500 years, biography and cultural history intertwine in a narrative packed with tales of rebellion, adventure, revolution, travel and tragedy enacted by women who turned their back on convention and lived lives of great resilience, creativity and bravery.

Book The Mirror Thief

Download or read book The Mirror Thief written by Martin Seay and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A globetrotting, time-bending, wildly entertaining masterpiece hailed by the New York Times Book Review as "Audaciously well written...the book I was raving about to my friends before I'd even finished it." Publishers Weekly raved that "with near-universal appeal . . . Seay’s debut novel is a true delight, a big, beautiful cabinet of wonders that is by turns an ominous modern thriller, a supernatural mystery, and an enchanting historical adventure story." Set in three cities in three eras, The Mirror Thief calls to mind David Mitchell and Umberto Eco in its mix of entertainment and literary bravado. The core story is set in Venice in the sixteenth century, when the famed makers of Venetian glass were perfecting one of the old world's most wondrous inventions: the mirror. An object of glittering yet fearful fascination—was it reflecting simple reality, or something more spiritually revealing?—the Venetian mirrors were state of the art technology, and subject to industrial espionage by desirous sultans and royals world-wide. But for any of the development team to leave the island was a crime punishable by death. One man, however—a world-weary war hero with nothing to lose—has a scheme he thinks will allow him to outwit the city's terrifying enforcers of the edict, the ominous Council of Ten . . . Meanwhile, in two other Venices—Venice Beach, California, circa 1958, and the Venice casino in Las Vegas, circa today—two other schemers launch similarly dangerous plans to get away with a secret . . . All three stories will weave together into a spell-binding tour-de-force that is impossible to put down—an old-fashioned, stay-up-all-night novel that, in the end, returns the reader to a stunning conclusion in the original Venice . . . and the bedazzled sense of having read a truly original and thrilling work of art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirror of the Century Dear Lady Tankerville, - Estimates of a century, or of a nation's spiritual or mental life reviewed over long periods, have often been attempted, and almost always with poor results. So you may well ask why I should expect you to consider The Mirror of the Century. Certainly if it had nothing to recommend it but my signature it would be little worth; but as a guide to the thoughts of twelve great artists whose work covers the momentous nineteenth century, and the part that England has played therein, a study of the novel in its many aspects, from Jane Austen to Mr. W. E. Norris, may have some small merit. In the great country of your birth, in so far as we can judge, all the century is present somewhere within its geographical borders at any given moment. It is not so with us. Much has died: it is astonishing to see how much. In these matters the statistician can help us but little: the artist is by far the better guide. Even to attempt to pilot a reader through the work of twelve artists is an audacious pretension: and to point the social and political morals to be drawn at each turn of the kaleidoscope almost beyond human endeavour. This book assesses the sensible, senseless and biased proposals for averting the potentially disastrous consequences of global warming, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions on switching to more sustainable energy provision. Burton Richter is a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who has served on many US and international review committees on climate change and energy issues. He provides a concise overview of our knowledge and uncertainties within climate change science , discusses current energy demand and supply patterns, and the energy options available to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. Written in non-technical language, this book presents a balanced view of options for moving from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels into a much more sustainable energy system, and is accessible to a wide range of readers without scientific backgrounds - students, policymakers, and the concerned citizen.

Book The Mirror of Music

Download or read book The Mirror of Music written by Jacobus De Ispania and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Speculum musicae of Magister Jacobus de Ispania from Lige is the ultimate Medieval Summa of music. Compiled probably during the 1330s, it comprises no fewer than seven books, altogether totaling more than 375,000 words. Princeton musicologist Rob C. Wegman offers a translation of the seventh and final book, which deals with contemporary polyphony. This part of the Speculum is the notorious-and uncommonly impassioned-diatribe against new musical and notational practices that had gained currency in France in the second quarter of the fourteenth century. Jacobus proves himself thoroughly schooled in Scholastic philosophy and prosecutes the case with relentless determination, using his consummate rhetorical skills and his fierce critical intelligence to full advantage. What drove him to launch the attack was his sense of personal loyalty to the music and musicians he had loved during his years as a university student at Paris, probably in the 1290s, as well as his faith in the decisive power of rigorous and methodical reasoning. Yet to his infinite sadness, his demonstrations proved of little avail against the more powerful contemporary forces of changing musical taste and practical expediency. Magister Jacobus concludes his treatise with a moving prayer of thanksgiving, in which he looks forward to the life to come, and appears ready to part from this world, which had so bitterly disappointed him in his final years.
