Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the Cold War, the world’s most important intelligence agencies—the Soviet KGB, the American CIA, and the British MI6—appeared to have clear-cut roles and a sense of rising importance in their respective countries. But when Kim Philby, head of MI6’s Russian division and arguably the twenty-first century’s greatest spy, was revealed to be a Russian mole along with British government heavyweights Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess, everything in the Western intelligence world turned upside down. Here is the true story of how the American James Bond—the colorful, foulmouthed, pistol-packing, alcoholic ex-FBI agent William “King” Harvey—put the finger on Philby; how James Jesus Angleton, the chain-smoking poet of Yale University and the CIA’s supposed “master spy” in charge of counterintelligence, began his descent into a paranoid wilderness of mirrors upon learning of family friend Kim Philby’s ultimate betrayal; and the devastating consequences of the loss of MI6 prestige and the CIA’s subsequent self-defeating witch hunts. Every revelation, every stranger-than-fiction twist and turn is all the more intriguing as truths become lies and unlikely scenarios are revealed as reality. With impeccable sourcing and the use of thousands of pages of declassified research, David C. Martin’s Wilderness of Mirrors is widely recognized as a masterpiece of intelligence literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudoscience and Deception is a compilation of some of the most eye-opening skeptical articles pertaining to extraordinary claims and pseudoscience. The articles explore paranormal, extraordinary, or fringe-science claims and reveal logical explanations or outline the deceptive tactics involved in convincing the vulnerable. Topics include claims of astrology, psychic ability, alternative medicine, after-death communication, psychotherapy, and pseudoscience. The contributors to this book are among the most accomplished critical thinkers, scientists, and educators in the world and tackle their respective topics from a rational, logical, and skeptical perspective. Most students are seldom excited to study “critical thinking”—with the exception of allegedly paranormal phenomena as the subject matter. Educators must seize this golden opportunity to witness and experience students’ genuine engagement in studying critical thinking.

Book The Ancient Aesthetics of Deception

Download or read book The Ancient Aesthetics of Deception written by Jonas Grethlein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of mimesis has dominated reflection on the nature and role, in Greek literature, of representation. Jonas Grethlein, in his ambitious new book, takes this reflection a step further. He argues that, beyond mimesis, there was an important but unacknowledged strand of reflection focused instead on the nuanced idea of apatē (often translated into English as 'deceit'), oscillating between notions of 'deception' and 'aesthetic illusion'. Many authors from Gorgias and Plato to Philo, Plutarch and Clement of Alexandria used this key concept to entwine aesthetics with ethics. In creatively exploring the various reconfigurations of apatē, and placing these in their socio-historical contexts, the book offers a bold new history of ancient aesthetics. It also explores the present significance of the aesthetics of deception, unlocking the potential of ancient reflection for current debates on the ethical dimension of representation. It will appeal to scholars in classics and literary theory alike.

Now, in this dazzling collection of nine entirely original essays, written with a rare combination of give and sharpness, wit and fearlessness, she delves into the forces that warp our vision, demonstrating an unparalleled stylistic potency and critical dexterity. Trick Mirror is an enlightening, unforgettable trip through the river of self-delusion that surges just beneath the surface of our lives. This is a book about the incentives that shape us, and about how hard it is to see ourselves clearly through a culture that revolves around the self. In each essay, Tolentino writes about a cultural prism: the rise of the nightmare social internet; the advent of scamming as the definitive millennial ethos; the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter; the punitive dream of optimization, which insists that everything, including our bodies, should become more efficient and beautiful until we die. Gleaming with Tolentino’s sense of humor and capacity to elucidate the impossibly complex in an instant, and marked by her desire to treat the reader with profound honesty, Trick Mirror is an instant classic of the worst decade yet. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a first-time writer, I found it difficult to put into words what I believed was the Lord knocking on the door of a receptive believer, servant, and witness. The inspiration for this book came when I prayed to the Lord. He answered, and the Holy Spirit did what only the Holy Spirit can and will do. Unlike most people, I was abandoned as a child and never did well in school. However, at a young age, I found the Lord, or should I say, he found me. I questioned what could he have done to be nailed to a cross and to manifest into flesh from the Spirit through sheer pure will, purpose, and authority. Every day, we encounter deception of the enemy or Satan. In this writing, I hope to show the lost that Reject, Deny, and Dismiss the signs of the times. Think of the Bible (Basic instructions before leaving earth). It is here I present the issues of God in a way that is reasonable enough for anyone to conclude that there is more than anyone can or ever will believe. Think of Proverbs 23:7, Matthew 6:33, and Luke 18:17. A noteworthy pastor with experience and at least a doctorate degree in divinity is usually the only one who can write at this level. However, I disagree and say they won’t reference Romans 2:11. The events we are currently witnessing and experiencing are clearly the wrath of God. I believe that nothing short of an open collective prayer initiative is the only thing that may save our nation. For those of us who still believe, we are of the people, by the people, and for the people, yet no one ever looked at the title when the US was referred to as the great Satan. It is because of the acronym USA, which stands for Under Satan’s Authority. Now the secret is out, so we obey God and live in peace. When you see these things, you know that they are a sign that the end of time is at hand.
