Book The Doge and the Dogaressa Fantasy and Horror Classics

Download or read book The Doge and the Dogaressa Fantasy and Horror Classics written by E. T. A. Hoffmann and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in 1818. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia in 1776, Hoffmann's family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman's most well-known story, produced in 1816, is 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', due to the fact that - some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for Léo Delibes's ballet Coppélia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cagliostro: The Splendour and Misery of a Master of Magic Such a statement made in connection with such a character as Cagliostro is popularly supposed to be will, no doubt, expose me to the charge of having whitewashed him. This, however, I emphatically deny. Whitewashing, as I understand this term, is a plausible attempt to portray base or detestable characters as worthy of esteem by palliating their vices and attributing noble motives to their crimes. This manner of treating historical figures is certainly not one of which I can be accused, as those who may have read previous biographical books of mine will admit. Whatever sympathy for Cagliostro my researches may have evoked it has always been exceeded by contempt of those who, combining an unreasoning prejudice with a slovenly system of compilation, have repeated the old charges against him with parrot-like stupidity. The object of this book is not so much an attempt to vindicate Cagliostro as to correct and revise, if possible, what I believe to be a false judgment of history. Book The Necromancer Or The Tale of the Black Forest Fantasy and Horror Classics

Download or read book The Necromancer Or The Tale of the Black Forest Fantasy and Horror Classics written by Lawrence Flammenberg and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Necromancer” is a 1794 Gothic novel written by Karl Friedrich Kahlert, published under the pseudonym 'Lawrence Flammenberg'. One of the seven 'horrid novels' ridiculed by Jane Austen in her famous novel “Northanger Abbey”, it contains a series of vivid stories concerning violence, hauntings, and the supernatural adventures of Helfried, Hermann, and the mysterious Necromancer, Volker. “The Necromancer” is told through multiple verbal or epistolary narratives from the perspective of different characters. These sequences became typical of the genre, as well as signposts for readers indicating that the work was fiction—or at least of dubious credibility. This early work of Gothic fiction constitutes a must-read for fans of the genre and is not to be missed by collectors. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-qual edition complete with the original text and artwork.
