In world literature, they came to represent Judeo-Christian, Persian and Greek influences. Stemming from both orally transmitted material and some of the earliest foreign works to be translated into Arabic (the Bible; the Pañchatantra; the Alexander Romance), the three types of authoritative wisdom reveal a pivotal, civilizational moment in the development of Arabic literature from an oral tradition to a written one. By the middle of the eighth century CE, the unique fusion of Graeco-Roman political theology with Persian and Indian political traditions led to the renewal of questions already associated with authority in the Biblical and Byzantine traditions.The development of Arabic prose literature during the 8th-11th century CE captured, in a multiplicity of literary genres (legendary biographies, philosophical doxographies, mirrors for princes, collections of wise sayings and theological essays), a protean wisdom embedded in divine knowledge, practical discipline, scientific achievements and moral teachings. The collection of essays assembled in this volume addresses the models of divine and practical wisdom in some of the earlier Arabic prose texts passed down to us. The renunciation story at the heart of Buddhism, that of a king who leaves his palace to become an ascetic, fascinated Borges because of its cross-cultural adaptability and metamorphic nature, and because it resonated so powerfully across philosophy, politics and aesthetics. From the story and its many variants, Borges’s essays formulated a 'morphological' conception of literature (borrowing the idea from Goethe), whereby a potentially infinite number of stories were generated by transformation of a finite number of 'archetypes'. The king-and-ascetic encounter also tells a powerful political story, setting up a confrontation between power and authority; Borges’s own political predicament is explored against the rich background of truth-telling renouncers. In its poetic variant, the renunciation archetype morphs into stories about art and artists, with renunciation a key requirement of the creative process: the discussion weaves in and out of Borges to highlight modern writers’ debt to asceticism. Ultimately, the enigmatic appeal of the renunciation story aligns it with the open-endedness of modern parables.

It gained strong attention when the well-known Palestinian journalist, activist, fiction writer and critic Ghassan Kanafani (1936–1972) published a study entitled the Literature of Resistance in Occupied Palestine: 1948–1966, a work that contributed to postcolonial theories of power, race, ethnicity and gender, and second generation theories of orientalism, feminism, and disability. Initially identified by philosophers, historians, and social critics as a focal point for situations in which oppressors brutally destroy the identity or subjectivity of the oppressed, resistance has been transformed by fiction writers, filmmakers, lyricists and speechmakers into a process in which responses and counter-responses to some type of injustice create difficult situations with complicated nuances. These works now form the foundation for what has come to be recognized as “resistance art.” This book gathers the insight, knowledge, and wisdom found in different manifestations of this art to further our understanding of the impact of resistance on contemporary life.
