Book excerpt: The MIRROR Challenge The dilemma that we all face is to ask ourselves where we are going in terms of our lives. One of my favourite words is 'Next!' What is next for me? For some readers who are in a bit of a rut, you could be wondering what's happening to me and/or why am I here? Have you been watching a 'movie' lately that seems to be stuck on the repeat button? Have you been caught in a maze and can't see your way out? It makes sense, every once in a while to step back from your day to day activities and ask yourself - Who I am? What am I doing? Where am I? Where am I going? Why am I here? How am I doing? What and where do I need to make changes? The MIRROR Challenge(TM) is aimed at challenging you to challenge yourself. Throughout the book there are a series of questions for you to think about and find answers. There are also a number of tried and tested MIRROR Challenge Exercises in each chapter as well as 'Have a Mirror Moment!' Exercise. These are for you to complete on your own initially and when you have finished, find a partner, colleague or friend and share the questions and answers with each other. The true purpose of the questions and the exercises is to help you get a fresh and new insight as well as a different perspective of who you are and 'unearth' the real picture/reflection of you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the power of mirror meditation to help you awaken self-compassion, increase self-awareness, and gain the confidence needed to thrive. Seeing ourselves clearly isn’t always easy—especially in the age of social media. Technology has eroded our capacity for authentic self-reflection. As a result, we feel more anxious and depressed, have shorter attention spans, and have become more estranged from ourselves and each other. We’ve also become more critical of our physical appearance, and this self-criticism can damage our confidence and stand in the way of our happiness. In order to heal, we must come face to face with our true selves—not the images of ourselves that we alter and post online. If you're ready for self-reflection that has nothing to do with selfies, this book will reveal the way. Based in cutting-edge neuroscience, Mirror Meditation offers mindful practices for increasing your self-awareness, managing stress and emotions, developing self-compassion, and increasing your confidence and personal presence. Using the three principles of mindfulness meditation—attention to the present moment, open awareness, and kind intention toward oneself—you’ll realize just how much your self-criticisms are affecting you. Then you’ll have a choice—and a practice—to treat yourself with more self-acceptance. Self-awareness can help you break free from both your inner critic and the external world that stokes the fears and anxieties that we are never good enough, never have enough, and are never safe enough. The simple self-mirroring technique in this unique guide isn’t grounded in technology—just a commitment to be present with yourself.

Book The Mirror and the Palette

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2021-10-05
  • ISBN : 1643138049
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Mirror and the Palette written by Jennifer Higgie and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzlingly original and ambitious book on the history of female self-portraiture by one of today's most well-respected art critics. Her story weaves in and out of time and place. She's Frida Kahlo, Loïs Mailou Jones and Amrita Sher-Gil en route to Mexico City, Paris or Bombay. She's Suzanne Valadon and Gwen John, craving city lights, the sea and solitude; she's Artemisia Gentileschi striding through the streets of Naples and Paula Modersohn-Becker in Worpswede. She's haunting museums in her paint-stained dress, scrutinising how El Greco or Titian or Van Dyck or Cézanne solved the problems that she too is facing. She's railing against her corsets, her chaperones, her husband and her brothers; she's hammering on doors, dreaming in her bedroom, working day and night in her studio. Despite the immense hurdles that have been placed in her way, she sits at her easel, picks up a mirror and paints a self-portrait because, as a subject, she is always available. Until the twentieth century, art history was, in the main, written by white men who tended to write about other white men. The idea that women in the West have always made art was rarely cited as a possibility. Yet they have - and, of course, continue to do so - often against tremendous odds, from laws and religion to the pressures of family and public disapproval. In The Mirror and the Palette, Jennifer Higgie introduces us to a cross-section of women artists who embody the fact that there is more than one way to understand our planet, more than one way to live in it and more than one way to make art about it. Spanning 500 years, biography and cultural history intertwine in a narrative packed with tales of rebellion, adventure, revolution, travel and tragedy enacted by women who turned their back on convention and lived lives of great resilience, creativity and bravery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How slave emancipation transformed capitalism in the United States and Brazil In the nineteenth century, the United States and Brazil were the largest slave societies in the Western world. The former enslaved approximately four million people, the latter nearly two million. Slavery was integral to the production of agricultural commodities for the global market, and governing elites feared the system’s demise would ruin their countries. Yet, when slavery ended in the United States and Brazil, in 1865 and 1888 respectively, what resulted was immediate and continuous economic progress. In American Mirror, Roberto Saba investigates how American and Brazilian reformers worked together to ensure that slave emancipation would advance the interests of capital. Saba explores the methods through which antislavery reformers fostered capitalist development in a transnational context. From the 1850s to the 1880s, this coalition of Americans and Brazilians—which included diplomats, engineers, entrepreneurs, journalists, merchants, missionaries, planters, politicians, scientists, and students, among others—consolidated wage labor as the dominant production system in their countries. These reformers were not romantic humanitarians, but cosmopolitan modernizers who worked together to promote labor-saving machinery, new transportation technology, scientific management, and technical education. They successfully used such innovations to improve production and increase trade. Challenging commonly held ideas about slavery and its demise in the Western Hemisphere, American Mirror illustrates the crucial role of slave emancipation in the making of capitalism.

Book The Riddle in the Mirror

Download or read book The Riddle in the Mirror written by Jayni Bloch and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Riddle In the Mirror is a personal account of a healing journey through experiencing the conflicting Apartheid era in South Africa during the author's childhood. The difficulties she experienced challenged a deeper insight into spiritual awareness that supported her path in search for healing. This story is everyone's story, as we all experience difficulties that challenge us to evolve. The Riddle in the Mirror is an essential map on our healing journey. It shifts our focus, from struggling with repetitive behaviour patterns that keep wounds alive in us and our children, towards psychological and spiritual growth instead. It connects the processes of healing to archetypal principles that illustrate how our personal healing contributes to the healing of humanity. We identify our life challenges as healing opportunities by looking at life as a mirror that reflects a spiritual truth recognizable beneath our socially conditioned secular interpretations and assumptions of experiences. We recognize how our personal story relates to our cultural and ancestral stories as a metaphor for collective healing of the whole world, through our personal participation by waking up to our own spiritual consciousness.

It was a bumpy road, and I am nowhere near content with the man I am, but everyday is a step in the right direction. Today when I look in the mirror, I see all the men and women who helped me become the man I am today. These reflections are just a fraction of my journey, but I wish to share with you reflections from the deepest depths of my heart and soul that have drastically altered the course of my life.

Download or read book Enemy in the Mirror written by Roxanne L. Euben and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firm grasp of Islamic fundamentalism has often eluded Western political observers, many of whom view it in relation to social and economic upheaval or explain it away as an irrational reaction to modernity. Here Roxanne Euben makes new sense of this belief system by revealing it as a critique of and rebuttal to rationalist discourse and post-Enlightenment political theories. Euben draws on political, postmodernist, and critical theory, as well as Middle Eastern studies, Islamic thought, comparative politics, and anthropology, to situate Islamic fundamentalist thought within a transcultural theoretical context. In so doing, she illuminates an unexplored dimension of the Islamist movement and holds a mirror up to anxieties within contemporary Western political thought about the nature and limits of modern rationalism--anxieties common to Christian fundamentalists, postmodernists, conservatives, and communitarians. A comparison between Islamic fundamentalism and various Western critiques of rationalism yields formerly uncharted connections between Western and Islamic political thought, allowing the author to reclaim an understanding of political theory as inherently comparative. Her arguments bear on broad questions about the methods Westerners employ to understand movements and ideas that presuppose nonrational, transcendent truths. Euben finds that first, political theory can play a crucial role in understanding concrete political phenomena often considered beyond its jurisdiction; second, the study of such phenomena tests the scope of Western rationalist categories; and finally, that Western political theory can be enriched by exploring non-Western perspectives on fundamental debates about coexistence.
