Book excerpt: Flanked by gorgeous brick row houses in the heart of Boston's South End, the Club Café is a bar where everybody knows your name--and who you slept with last. Every night men like Tommy Perez, Rico DiMio, and Kyle Andrews take their place among the glistening crowd sporting chest-defining shirts and lots of smooth, tanned skin, sizing up the regulars and the new blood while TV monitors blare Beyoncé and Missy Elliott. For Tommy, Thursdays at the Club Café in the company of his wingman Rico and a Skinny Black Bitch (vodka and Diet Coke) are unmissable. Recently relocated from Miami to Boston to take a reporting job at The Boston Daily, Tommy is finding it hard to break away from his tight-knit Cuban family, but his homesickness goes into rapid remission when he meets Mikey, a blue-eyed, boyish guidance counselor from Cape Cod. Smart, funny, and wicked cute, Mikey is perfect boyfriend material. . .until his drinking leads Tommy to suspect that he's got some issues of his own. Rico--a tough-talking, Italian-American accountant with a gamma ray smile and mournful green eyes that hint at a past he'll admit to no one--is sure Mikey is bad news, but to Rico any relationship that lasts longer than three hours sounds like bad news. Then there's Kyle, the lean, preening model and former reality show star who makes a red-carpet entrance into the CC every Thursday as if a swarm of cameras still follows his every move, but whose real life is about to take a dramatic turn he never anticipated. Over the course of one unforgettable year, Tommy is forced to rethink everything he's ever believed about life, lust, and love. And in the Club Café, a place filled with endless possibilities--of stumbling upon the perfect partner, the perfect story idea, or just a play buddy for the night--Tommy might finally discover the person he was meant to be. "Make way for the boys of summer! Johnny Diaz has written a sexy beach-read romp you won't be able to put down." --William J. Mann, author of Where the Boys Are and All American Boy

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. PAUL REVERE AND ROGER SPREAD THE ALARM. Roger's heart almost stopped beating, as the conversation recorded above fell upon his ears. What was this the British officers were saying? They were going to capture Samuel Adams and John Hancock, and place them under military arrest! The two greatest men, politically, the colonies at that time knew! It must never be! Young as he was, he realised the importance of such a capture, should it be executed. In all the movements of the patriots in and about Boston, Samuel Adams was, to use the expression framed at that time, " the power behind the throne." He was a foremost member of Congress in 1774, and he helped draw up the original draft of the State Constitution, and now hardly a movement was made but what he was directly or indirectly concerned in it. Of John Hancock no less could be said. Elected to the presidency of the Provincial Congress in 1774, he stood shoulder to shoulder with Samuel Adams, in company with Doctor Warren, afterwards General Warren, the martyr-hero of Bunker Hill, Josiah Quincy, Jr., the patriots' Cicero, William Cooper, the fearless Boston town clerk, and a score of men equally feared by the Crown. In addition to being an active patriot, Hancock was one of the wealthiest landowners and business men of Boston, and his influence caused many a merchant to become a Whig, who might otherwise have turned Tory. "It must not be," thought the boy. "I must tell Captain Parker, -- everybody. Somebody must know where Mr. Adams and Mr. Hancock are stopping to-night, and warn them to seek a place of safety. And the militia and minute men must be on guard, too, against the troops General Gage is going to send from Boston. That surprise must not be all on one side!" With bated...

Book Child Labor in Greater Boston 18801920

Download or read book Child Labor in Greater Boston 18801920 written by Ann Piper and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its earliest days, Boston decreed that its children be taught to read and write English and understand the laws. In 1826, free and compulsory education was introduced. The wish to educate the young conflicted with the great need for unskilled labor in the fields and factories. With adult wages low, schoolchildren helped their families by selling newspapers, shining shoes, hawking goods, or scavenging. On reaching 14 years of age, many children left school to find full-time work. Fearing that these children would end up in low-paying, dead-end jobs, Boston Public Schools added trade schools to teach craft skills--carpentry, printing, and metalwork for boys; dressmaking, cooking, and embroidery for girls. The national struggle to ban child labor began in the mid-19th century and ended with the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This book describes the efforts in Boston and surrounding towns to keep children in school, at least until age 16, before permitting them to start work. The bulk of the images included were taken by Lewis Wickes Hine during his several visits to Boston between 1909 and 1917.
