Book excerpt: A way to solve the naturalness problem of the Higgs mass arising from the standard model is to introduce a new symmetry: the supersymmetry. Supersymmetry predicts, along with every particle, its supersymmetric counterpart, which has the same internal quantum numbers, the same mass (if supersymmetry is not broken) and an intrinsic angular momentum differing by half a unity from the first one. Phenomenologically it is evident that if supersymmetry does exist, it is broken. Nowadays it seems that the more realistic and phenomenologically acceptable models of supersymmetry are the minimal N=1 supergravity models. The purpose of this thesis is to study the various experimental possibilities of testing the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Altough the MSSM is only a particular model along a wide class of possible supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, it is considered here because of its simplicity which entails strong and definite phenomenological predictions. We will show that the MSSM can indeed be fully tested in the next high-energy experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weak scale supersymmetry has a generic problem of fine-tuning in reproducing the correct scale for electroweak symmetry breaking. The problem is particularly severe in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM). We present a solution to this problem that does not require an extension of the MSSM at the weak scale. Superparticle masses are generated by a comparable mixture of moduli and anomaly mediated contributions, and the messenger scale of supersymmetry breaking is effectively lowered to the TeV region. Crucial elements for the solution are a large A term for the top squarks and a small B term for the Higgs doublets. Requiring no fine-tuning worse than 20%, we obtain rather sharp predictions on the spectrum. The gaugino masses are almost universal at the weak scale with the mass between 450 and 900 GeV. The squark and slepton masses are also nearly universal at the weak scale with the mass a factor of √2 smaller than that of the gauginos. The only exception is the top squarks whose masses split from the other squark masses by about m{sub t}/√2. The lightest Higgs boson mass is smaller than 120 GeV, while the ratio of the vacuum expectation values for the two Higgs doublets, tan [beta], is larger than about 5. The lightest superparticle is the neutral Higgsino of the mass below 190 GeV, which can be dark matter of the universe. The mass of the lighter top squark can be smaller than 300 GeV, which may be relevant for Run II at the Tevatron.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose a simple gauged U(1)B−L extension of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), where R-parity is conserved as usual in the MSSM. The global B−L (baryon minus lepton number) symmetry in the MSSM is gauged and three MSSM gauge-singlet chiral multiplets with a unit B −L charge are introduced, ensuring the model free from gauge and gravitational anomalies. We assign an odd R-parity for two of the new chiral multiplets The scalar component of the R-parity even superfield plays the role of a Higgs field to beak the U (1)BL symmetry through its negative mass squared which is radiatively generated by the renormalization group running of soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking parameters. Because of our novel R-parity assignment, three light neutrinos are Dirac particles with one massless state. Since R-parity is conserved, the lightest superpartner (LSP) neutralino is a prime candidate of the cosmological dark matter. In particular, the B − L gauge boson (Z ), once discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, will be a novel probe of the Dirac nature of the light neutrinos since its invisible decay processes include the final states with one massless (left-handed) neutrino and two Dirac neutrinos, in sharp contrast with the conventional B − L extension of the SM or MSSM, where the right-handed neutrinos are heavy Majorana particles and decay to the SM leptons. We generalize a variation to the SUSY Left-Right symmetric model based on the gauge group SU (3)c × SU (2)L × SU (2)R × U (1)BL . The charge conjugate SU (2)L singlets are put into SU (2)R doublets, mirroring the former. We only introduce a second Higgs bidoublet to produce realistic fermion mass matrices. We calculate renormalization group evolutions of soft SUSY parameters at the one-loop level down to low energy. We find that an SU (2)R slepton doublet acquires a negative mass squared at low energies, so that the breaking of SU (2)R × U (1)BL → U (1)Y is realized by a non-zero vacuum expectation value of a right-handed sneutrino. Small neutrino masses are produced through neutrino mixings with gauginos. Mass limits on the SU (2)R × U (1)BL sector are obtained by direct search results at the LHC as well as lepton-gaugino mixing bounds from the LEP precision data.

By replacing the point-like particles with strings, an apparently consistent quantum theory of gravity emerges. Studies of string theory have revealed that it predicts higher-dimensional objects called branes. String theory strongly suggests the existence of ten or eleven (in M-theory) space-time dimensions, as opposed to the usual four (three spatial and one temporal) used in relativity theory.
