Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 24 (thesis year 1979) a total of 10,033 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 215 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 24 reports these submitted in 1979, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Petrogenesis and Exploration of the Earth s Interior

Download or read book Petrogenesis and Exploration of the Earth s Interior written by Domenico M. Doronzo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology and Volcanology. The Earth's interior is a source of heat, which makes our planet unique. This source regulates the formation and evolution of rocks at larger scales, and of minerals and sediments toward smaller scales. In such context, the exploration of georesources (products) has to be related to petrogenesis (processes). This volume offers an overview of the state-of-the-art petrogenesis and exploration in, but not limited to, the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. It gives new insights into processes and products related to the Earth's interior, and associated georesources by international researchers. Main topics include: 1. Petrogenetic processes: geochemistry, geochronology and geophysical approaches 2. Surficial processes: sedimentation and facies analysis 3. Applied mineralogy and tectonics 4. Geological research applied to mineral deposits

Book The Mineralogy Geochemistry and Geochronology of the La Posta Pluton San Diego and Imperial Counties California

Download or read book The Mineralogy Geochemistry and Geochronology of the La Posta Pluton San Diego and Imperial Counties California written by John Patrick Clinkenbeard and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The La Posta pluton is the largest of a series of similar bodies that characterize the eastern zone of the Peninsular Ranges batholith. It appears to be a single intrusive body that is concentrically zoned from a metaluminous, sphene-hornblende-biotite tonalite rim to a peraluminous, muscovite-biotite granodiorite core. The interior portion of the pluton contains a large NNW oriented metasedimentary roof pendant which divides the pluton in the study area. Cutting both the La Posta pluton and the metasedimentary rocks is a body of garnet-muscovite-biotite monzogranite which is enveloped by sillimanite-grade metamorphic rocks. This study of the geochemical, mineralogical, and isotopic variations of the pluton and some of the related rocks was undertaken in order to better understand the age and origin of this large zoned body. Variation in major element compositions from rim to core is small with silica ranging from 66% to 74% and A/CNK ratio varying from 0.96 to 1.21. Total iron, MgO, CaO, MnO, Ti02, and P205 all decrease in abundance from rim to core. K20 and Na20 show no systematic variation in the pluton. The geochemical variations within the pluton are consistent with the petrographic relationships which indicate that hornblende, then biotite, and finally muscovite crystallized in the presence of quartz, increasingly sodic plagioclase, and an increasing amount of alkali feldspar. The La Posta rocks are enriched in Sr relative to other rocks in the Peninsular Ranges batholith. The garnet-bearing monzogranites appear to be geochemically distinct from the La Posta rocks. Mineral compositions show a limited range of variation within the pluton. The anorthite content of plagioclase varies approximately 10% from the margin to the core of the pluton. Biotite compositions vary primarily with paragenesis. Estimates of temperature and pressure conditions based on mineral chemistries indicate pressures of 2 to 3 kbars and temperatures of 735°C to 785°C. These conditions are consistent with those obtained for the adjacent metamorphic rocks. Three U-Pb (zircon) ages and one Rb-Sr age for rocks from the La Posta pluton indicate an age of 94 -+ 1 m.y. No significant variation in age was noted between the eastern and western portions of the pluton. The La Posta pluton is isotopically zoned with respect to oxygen. Whole rock oxygen values increase from 10.5 per mil at the western margin to 11.8 per mil at the core and decrease to 9.7 per mil at the eastern margin. This zonation appears to be primary rather than reflecting the effects of high level processes. The high primary oxygen values are indicative of the involvement of crustal material in the origin of the magma either as a source material or as a reservoir for isotopic exchange. The overall chemical composition of the pluton and the low initial strontium value of 0.70437 suggests that any continentally derived component was small. The La Posta pluton appears to have been emplaced as a single intrusive unit at mid-crustal depths of 7 to 11 kilometers. The compositional and isotopic evidence indicate that the major components of the magma originated from the upper mantle or intermediate mantle derived materials. The zonation from metaluminous sphene-hornblende-biotite tonalite at the margins to muscovite-biotite granodiorite resulted from the fractional crystallization of the magma as the pluton cooled from the margins inward.
