Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Resources of Western Australia Having been a pupil of John Calvert, geologist and goldminer, who found gold on the Ashburton as early as 1847, I have always had strong proclivities in the direction of mineral science; and I could not but coincide with his expressed views regard ing parallel belts of auriferous country in Western Australia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Resources of Western Australia In issuing the following pages, my chief motive is to set down, in the form of a small volume, a striking array of facts which now present themselves in connection with The Mineral Resources of Western Australia. Until within the last few years her rich heritage from Nature was unknown, and indeed unsuspected. Few of her colonists knew anything about the vague rumours of Dampier and the Dutch having discovered gold in bygone centuries; and if such tales had reached their ears, they very properly paid little heed; but looked after their cattle and their crops. If haply, however, any imaginative colonist did cherish a golden dream, how amply has it been realised! For my own part, I have endeavoured in a humble way, within the last few years, to see for myself some evidences of Western Australia's future greatness. I have made three visits to this colony for the purpose of exploring inland, and have travelled that portion of the North-Western district lying between Cossack and Mount Macpherson. Book A Record of the Mines of South Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Record of the Mines of South Australia Classic Reprint written by Henry Yorke Lyell Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of the Mines of South Australia Great difficulty has been experienced in collecting information respecting abandoned mines but for many of these I have drawn upon the information contained in Mr. J. B. Austin's pamphlet on The Mines of South Australia, published in 1863, and Professor Ulrich's report on The Mineral Resources north of Port Augusta, published in 1872. It will be noticed that some of the better known mines are but meagrely described. This is owing to the fact that the proprietors or managers have not responded to the request made for information, and in many cases it has been possible only to mention the name and locality of the mine. South Australia has no department of mines such as obtains in Victoria, but the establishment of one would be of great service both to miners and the general public. It may be said that our mineral resources are not sufficiently developed to warrant a separate department being established. But that is not the case. In copper we have done largely, and our territory contains valuable ores and minerals hitherto untouched. The outlook for the capper industry is at present dark and unpromising, nor does there appear to be much prospect of improvement unless some industry, in which copper will be largely used, is initiated. Book Western Australia Department of Mines

Download or read book Western Australia Department of Mines written by Alexander Montgomery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Australia, Department of Mines: Report of the Northampton Mineral Field, 3rd March, 1908 In an open out near the old main shaft a shallow crosscut has been driven for about 20ft. In clayey material containing carbonate of lead. Mr. Archibald told me his trials of the stuff from this cross cut averaged 20 per cent. of lead car bonate. The ore extracted from the lode in the old days is said to have been mostly carbonate near the surface. In a small parallel lode found by the present owners close to the main one, however, galena came up nearly to the surface. The present owners have raised about 53 tons of marketable galena since starting, mostly from this small lode, which has shown 3in. To 12m. In width of galena. According to the testimony of men who formerly worked in the mine they expect to get a larger lode in the bottom of the old workings, with a payable strong vein of galena upwards of 2ft. Wide. The reason this mine was shut down is stated to have been because the other mines 111 the hands of the same owners had to be closed in 1878, partly, if not entirely, owing to the death of the principal owner, and it could not be kept on by itself. The present owners seem well satisfied with their chances of success. But at the time of my visit the lode could not be inspected underground, and I am unable to express any opinion on it further than that it is clear that the old workers must have had a fairly long shoot of ore in the main lode, and, judg ing from the tailings heaps, must have dressed a good deal of material. They seem to have had jigging machinery on the ground. The amount of dressed ore raised is not on record, as it was sent away without distinction from the rest of the output from the Geraldine mines.
