Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Industry, Its Statistics, Technology and Trade During 1905, Vol. 14: Supplementing Volume 1 to 13 Moreover some of the statistics reported in this volume are preliminary, and subject to revision. It is our belief, however, that statistics of reasonable commercial accuracy, promptly published, are of greater value to technology and trade than are statistics, corrected to the last unit, which are published a year or two late. However, it has been nec essary to use these approximations in only a few instances, and most of the figures which are to be found in this book will prove to require only slight, if any, revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Industry, Its Statistics, Technology and Trade During 1921, Vol. 30: Supplementing Volumes I to XXIX A number of minerals of lesser importance from a technical standpoint have not been covered in this work. This applies in particular to those connected with the pottery and building trades, whose raw materials are so widely distributed that a general report would require space out of all proportion to its value in a review of this kind. On the other hand, some industries relating to manufactured material are included, when the product is directly dependent on the production of raw minerals, or where it is being substituted for them, as in the case of cement and coke. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Industry, Vol. 20: Its Statistics, Technology and Trade During 1911; Supplementing Volumes I to XIX In recent years, the industries, not only of the natural mineral products, but also of those manufactured products, that are intimately related, have been described in this annual volume. As the processes by which some of the manufactures that more or less replace the natural minerals are developing with the present progress in science, and as new materials and methods are invented and put into com mercial use, we cannot hope to treat all these under separate headings, but have mentioned many of them in kindred articles where they are readily accessible by consulting the index. The statistics for this volume of mineral industry have been prepared and corrected with the usual care, and figures referring to years earlier than 1911, wherever necessary, have been revised in order to conform to corrected official reports received since the last volume was issued. In this Vol. XX, therefore, will be found for the recent years the available figures accepted in the light of the latest and most complete investigation and it is consequently important to use the last volume of the mineral industry. Absolute accuracy, of course, is never attainable, but we believe that the degree of accuracy characterizing the volumes of mineral industry is such that it will serve commercial purposes. Statistics for the last year cannot be complete for all classes of minerals and products owing to the fact that they have to be collected in the course Of Six months and therefore many items have to be estimated to some extent. The figures for preceding years in many cases, though not all, can be made more accurate to a certain point where they will stand, for practically all time. Technical and business men will find figures that are promptly published and of reasonable accuracy of greater value in their pursuits than those statistics a year or two late; although the latter may have their final accuracy.
