Its geographical position is between 27 degrees 5 minutes and 35 degrees 45 minutes of south latitude, and between 6 degrees 22 minutes and 14 degrees 16 minutes of west longitude from Rio de Janeiro (fig. 1, Plate XX). These are well represented. The Andean highlands are rich in mineral resources, while most of the extensive areas drained by the Plata, the Amazon and the Orinoco have soil and climate that adapt them to supply the world with immense stores of food. These facts can be well brought out by the pictures here offered. Many regions are still occupied largely by descendants of the native Indian races that have made little progress in civilization, but there are also great cities throbbing with' energy and commercial activity. Both elements 'of the population have a place in this collection, The Latin races predominate in South America, but England and the nations of northern Europe see their opportunities there and are not slow to take advantage of them. Recent years have seen the awakening of a marked. Interest in Latin America on the part of the people of the United States and the capital of this country is rapidly being invested there. The Opening of the Panama canal has brought the rich western side of the continent appreciably nearer to us and is bound to increase our trade and intercourse with the enterprising people of the Pacific coast. It is not strange, therefore, that many organizations as well as our schools are inquiring with great frequency for slides on South America. It is to meet this demand in a measure at least that the announcement of this list is made now rather than delayed for the sake of completeness. Doubtless' an intensive study of these pictures through close observation and a proper amount of reading can hardly fail to give the student a clearer comprehension of conditions in South American countries than a hasty and superficial examination of a much larger number. A number of the pictures were made several years ago, but these for the most part represent physical features that are practically free from changes or types. Of life that are fairly stable. Many of them were made recently by travelers and business men who have been attracted to this comparatively unknown part of the world. Her principal mineral is gold while of decreasing impor tance are the precious and semi-precious stones, manganese iron ore and lime stone. Following Minas Gerais is the state of' Sao Paulo with 1370 of the total output, the principal product being limestone. Rio Grande do Sul with her coal production and other minor minerals accounted for 1270 while Estado do Rio, the fourth most important, had an output based largely on limestone which represented 8% of the total. It is to be noted that with the exception of Rio Grande do 5111, the remaining three states form a compact group in the Southeastern section of Brazil accounting for 71% of the total mineral output oft the country. As a point of interest, however, it may be pointed out that the output of iron, steel and cement alone equal more than one-half of the total mineral production of the country. I had some minor objects in mind; but these will appear in the course of my narrative. As a matter of fact the real object of these travels was to gratify that intense longing to visit remote and little - known spots on the earth which was the first cause of my choosing a wandering life, and which I could no more overcome than the sun can fail to give light and heat - a natural feature, or failing, which would still be the guiding principle of my life were I not incapable of following it longer. For, it may interest my readers to know, always a cripple since the days of my boyhood, it has astonished my friends that I have proved capable of living the adventurous life of my choice; but now, as the result of a second severe accident, I am a mere wreck, and have had to abandon my beloved forests and prairies for the remnant of this life. I say this life, for I still comfort myself with the Indian idea of a happy hunting-ground in the future. Surely if this world is so wonderful and so beautiful, that which is to come cannot be less so. The Great Spirit cannot fail to be marvellously skilful in all His works; and, as Victor Hugo has said, this world is evidently but the vestibule to a greater. He read about the flood of silver that flowed from its Cerro Rico and learned of the toil of its miners. Potosí symbolized fabulous wealth and unbelievable suffering. New World bullion stimulated the formation of the first world economy but at the same time it had profound consequences for labor, as mine operators and refiners resorted to extreme forms of coercion to secure workers. In many cases the environment also suffered devastating harm. All of this occurred in the name of wealth for individual entrepreneurs, companies, and the ruling states. Yet the question remains of how much economic development mining managed to produce in Latin America and what were its social and ecological consequences. Brown's focus on the legendary mines at Potosí and comparison of its operations to those of other mines in Latin America is a well-written and accessible study that is the first to span the colonial era to the present.
