Book excerpt: For seventy-one years, iron ore was mined at Wabana, Bell Island: half the output was used in Canada; the other half was shipped around the world. When the mine shut down on June 30, 1966, it was Canada's oldest, continuously operating iron mine. The miners worked three miles under the ocean in Conception Bay, in what was, during its lifetime, the world's most extensive submarine iron mine. This is the story of the miners, of their workday, of the conditions in the mines, the story of the horses and the rats, of the fun that relieved the tedium and of the tragedies.

Book excerpt: When gold was found in Northern California, news of it spread like a wildfire during the spring and summer of 1848. At first, most people thought the reports were too good to be true, but as weeks and months flew by, they heard about more people striking it rich – and imaginations started to run wild. Tens of thousands of people started to dream about gold, and some of them left everything they knew to make the journey to California. It didn’t matter if you were black, white or brown – anyone could go. Even people in Central and South America, Australia, China, and Western Europe heard about the gold and made the journey. By 1855, hundreds of thousands of people had converged on California. In this study, the author shares diary entries from gold seekers, painting a detailed portrait of the frenzy that overtook the world, the lives of the miners, and how the move West changed the fabric of a nation. Without the dreams, hard work, and dedication of the miners who moved West, the United States of America would not be what it is today.

Book excerpt: The miners' lockout of 1926 was a pivotal moment in British twentieth-century history. Opening with the heady days of the general strike, it continued for seven months and affected one million miners. In County Durham, where almost three in every ten adult men worked in the coal industry, its impact was profound. Hester Barron explores the way that the lockout was experienced by Durham's miners and their families. She investigates collective values and behaviour, focusing particularly on the tensions between identities based around class and occupation, and the rival identities that could cut across the creation of a cohesive community. Highlighting the continuing importance of differences due to gender, age, religion, poverty, and individual hopes and aspirations, she nevertheless finds that in 1926, despite such differences, the Durham coalfield continued to display the solidarity for which miners were famed. In response, Barron argues that the very concept of the 'mining community' needs to be reassessed. Rather than consisting of an homogeneous occupational identity, she suggests that the essence of community lay in its ability to subsume and integrate other categories of identity. A collective consciousness was further grounded in a shared historical narrative that had to be continually reinforced. It was the strength of such local solidarities that enabled both an exemplary regional response to the strike, and the ability to conceptualise such action within the wider framework of the national union. The 1926 Miners' Lockout provides crucial insights into issues of collective identity and collective action, illuminating wider debates about solidarity and fragmentation within working-class communities and cultures.

  • Author : Richard Martin

Book excerpt: Since the late 18th century, when it emerged as a source of heating and, later, steam power, coal has brought untold benefits to mankind. Even today, coal generates almost 45 percent of the world's power. Our modern technological society would be inconceivable without coal and the energy it provides. Unfortunately, that society will not survive unless we wean ourselves off coal. The largest single source of greenhouse gases, coal is responsible for 43 percent of the world's carbon emissions. Richard Martin, author of SuperFuel, argues that to limit catastrophic climate change, we must find a way to power our world with less polluting energy sources, and we must do it in the next couple of decades—or else it is "game over." It won't be easy: as coal plants shut down across the United States, and much of Europe turns to natural gas, coal use is growing in the booming economies of Asia— particularly China and India. Even in Germany, where nuclear power stations are being phased out in the wake of the Fukushima accident, coal use is growing. Led by the Sierra Club and its ambitious "Beyond Coal" campaign, environmentalists hope to drastically reduce our dependence on coal in the next decade. But doing so will require an unprecedented contraction of an established, lucrative, and politically influential worldwide industry. Big Coal will not go gently. And its decline will dramatically change lives everywhere—from Appalachian coal miners and coal company executives to activists in China's nascent environmental movement. Based on a series of journeys into the heart of coal land, from Wyoming to West Virginia to China's remote Shanxi Province, hundreds of interviews with people involved in, or affected by, the effort to shrink the industry, and deep research into the science, technology, and economics of the coal industry, Coal Wars chronicles the dramatic stories behind coal's big shutdown—and the industry's desperate attempts to remain a global behemoth. A tour de force of literary journalism, Coal Wars will be a milestone in the climate change battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K’hor, Warlord of Hamuir, was stuck between a rock and hard place… Literally. On Djaromir, a remote and desolate mining planet, K’hor and two fellow warlords rule a rugged, but desperate people. With few females remaining, the miners of Djaromir must find new mates or face extinction. When the opportunity arises to rescue Earth-women kidnapped, K’hor sees a new future for his people. With the new brides under his protection, he hopes that a little time alone with his men will be enough to convince at least some of the women to stay —specifically the one he realizes is his mate. Juniper wanted a family, not a kidnapping and hostage situation... Applying for the Bridal Pact had taken every ounce of courage Juniper had left in her compact 5’2’’ body. High hopes for a new future had burst into flames the moment she realized her bridal liaison was nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing—or in this case a human trafficker in a cheap dress suit. Waking on a harsh alien world, Junie knew her plans had gone poof. Blaming it on her bad luck, she’s ready to throw in the towel and admit defeat when he walks in. Unable to deny a strange and powerful attraction for her Warlord rescuer, Juniper has some tough decisions to make. Even though it makes no sense, Junie can’t shake the feeling that she belongs here—with him. Djaromir was offering her everything she’d ever wanted, topped with one deliciously alpha, panty-wetting Warlord. Was she crazy or could this be fate’s plan all along?
