Book Japan and Germany Under the U S Occupation

Download or read book Japan and Germany Under the U S Occupation written by Masako Shibata and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the post war reconstruction of the education systems in Japan and Germany under U.S. military occupation after World War II, this book offers a comparative historical investigation of education reform policies in these two war ravaged and ideologically compromised countries. While in Japan large-scale reforms were undertaken swiftly after the end of the war, the U.S. zone in Germany maintained most of the traditional aspects of the German education system. Why did Japan so readily accept ideas and values developed in the allied countries while Germany resisted? Masako Shibata explores this question, arguing that the role of the university and the pattern of elite formation, which can be traced back to the period of the formation of Meiji Japan and the Kaiserreich, created the conditions for differing reactions from educational leaders in each country; this had a decisive impact on the proposed reforms. By examining these reactions through a sociological, cultural, and historical frame, an explanation emerges. Japan and Germany under the U.S. Occupation will prove to be a valuable resource both to scholars of history and education reform.

Book Sociological Analysis

Download or read book Sociological Analysis written by Arun Sahay and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972, this book is an important introduction to the analytical aspects of sociology. It analyses the various strands in 20th Century sociological thought, illustrating the richness as much as the poverty of any particular approach. It explores and compares the work of Weber and Pareto on sociological analysis, stressing the vital significance of their contributions to sociological knowledge. It looks at the stimulating implications of Karl Mannheim’s thought on the sociology of knowledge and finds in Mannheim the beginnings of most of the contemporary trends in sociology. It covers the fundamental assumptions of Parsonian thought and analyses the derivative character of the ideas of Robert Merton and Reinhard Bendix, along with Dahrendorf’s notions on a re-orientation of sociology.

Book A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences

Download or read book A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences written by G. Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed especially to meet the needs of beginners in all the social sciences, "A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences" follows its highly successful distinguished predecessor initially issued as "A Dictionary of Sociology" first published in 1968. Many of the entries have been revised and updated to keep abreast of the proliferation in the vocabulary of the social sciences. The volume remains on excellent single source for definitions in social research. The entries include social psychological terms, terms in social and cultural anthropology, terms common to political science, social administration and social work. In the choice of words, a generous definition of social science was employed, making the dictionary a very useful reference source for all beginners in the social sciences. Some terms are explained quite briefly while others are given lengthy treatment, according to the further assumptions that some sociological terms can imply. Thus, long entries are given on words, such as authority, consensus, phenomenology, role, social stratification, structuralism, whereas short and succinct entries suffice for words such, as agnate, eidos, or mores. A number of short biographical sketches are also included. The contributors are all scholars working in universities, predominantly in the United Kingdom and the United States. More than a glossary, "A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences" helps the student understand some of the theoretical considerations underlying the use of sociological terms, as well as something of their history, and therefore resembles an encyclopaedia in its scope and depth of information.

Download or read book Society and Psyche written by Kanakis Leledakis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing interpretations and drawing critically from classical and modern social theory, post-structuralism, and psychoanalytic theory, this original study offers an alternative way of thinking about the social and the individual. It offers critical analyses of, among others, Marx, Giddens, Bourdieu, Derrida, Laclau and Mouffe, Castoriadis, Freud and modern psychoanalytic theorists, and considers their roles in advancing our present-day conceptualization of the social and the self. In theorizing that behaviour is both socially determined and autonomous, it avoids the impasses of either individualist or structuralist approaches.
