Book The Mind and Its Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mind and Its Education Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind and Its Education This book is intended as an introduction to psychology for teachers, both in their private study and their Reading Circle classes, for students in secondary schools, normal schools or colleges, and for general readers. Its appearance is an immediate outgrowth of various courses of lectures on psychology and education given to teachers and elementary students in education. More remotely, it owes its origin to a suggestion received from Prof. John Dewey when the writer was a student in his classes. Said Professor Dewey: "The teacher is equally under the necessity of knowing each of the two factors in the educational process - culture and the child; that is, subject-matter and psychology - not the technicalities and controversial points of psychology, but its broad and fundamental truths, upon which practically all are agreed, and which, fortunately, are simple and easily understood." This statement furnishes the standpoint, in the following pages, for both subject-matter and method of treatment. First, the attempt has been made to present only fundamental truths, which, let us be thankful, are but little subject to controversy. Book The Principles of Intellectual Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Intellectual Education Classic Reprint written by F. H. Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Intellectual Education What then is the aim of education? Only one answer in general terms is possible - it is to prepare for life. But when we begin to work out in detail all that is involved in this apparently simple formula, we begin to be conscious of the difficulties before us. Even setting aside the question of the formation of character, which does not fall directly within the scope of this treatise, and limiting ourselves strictly to the training of the intellect, it is clear that the same qualities do not suit all walks of life, and that the possibility of developing adequately both the special qualities required for special pursuits and the general qualities common to all, if any such there be, will depend in both cases alike on the natural quick ness and adaptability of the mind to be trained and the length of time during which the child can be kept at school. Hence four questions arise (i) What are the general qualities of mind which education is able to develop, if any? (2) What special qualities fit special walks? (3) What is the natural character and adaptability of the mind under training? (4) How long can that training be continued? Now two of these questions, the second and the fourth, cannot be handled effectively in a general disquisition upon education. They require special treatment to be of any great value. At the same time they cannot be put aside altogether. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mental Development and Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mental Development and Education Classic Reprint written by M. V. O'shea and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development and Education In writing this volume the author has had constantly in mind the interests and needs of teachers in service and also persons who are preparing to teach. Consequently those aspects only of mental development and of education which directly concern those who train the young have received attention; all strictly technical and speculative discussion has been avoided. No attempt has been made to treat comprehensively the psychology of childhood and youth or educational values and methods. Two questions have guided the discussion throughout; - first, How does the individual normally respond at different periods in his development to the typical situations, physical, intellectual, aesthetic and social, in which he is placed; and second, How can he best appropriate the materials and benefits of education so that he can utilize them to greatest advantage in daily life? The point of view is that afforded by present-day biological psychology. For those who may not at first glance see just what this point of view is, it may be said that one who regards human nature from the standpoint of biological psychology seeks to explain the behavior of a child or a youth on the basis of natural laws governing the development of his body, his intellect and his character. It is seen that the individual is at birth equipped with tendencies which represent some of the activities which have proved of service in the life of his ancestors, and these tendencies are manifested in varying degrees and forms in the course of development from birth to maturity. Book Fundamentals of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals of Education Classic Reprint written by Boyd H. Bode and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Education The purpose of this volume is to interpret present day educational problems from the standpoint of pragmatic philosophy. The discussion is centered chiefly on two main topics; viz., the aims or ideals which should be dominant in education, and the nature of the mind or intelligence with which education has to deal. The book is written in the conviction that educational theory and practice have been vitiated by preconceptions which were historically inevitable but which are unjustifiable in the light of modern knowl edge. These preconceptions must be eliminated if education is to make its proper contribution towards the enrichment of life and towards making the world safe for democracy. The development during recent years of scientific method in the field of education has brought with it a comparative neglect of the more fundamental issues. For the time being this shift of emphasis towards scientific investigation was prob ably desirable. Its effect has been to place educational research on a permanent basis. But unless the study of detailed problems is properly correlated with theory, there is serious danger that education will simply be come more complicated, and perhaps more mechanical. Book The Co Education of Mind and Hand Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Co Education of Mind and Hand Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Ham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Co-Education of Mind and Hand The complete separation of the schools from the arts in the early ages, resulted in such incongruities as the pyramids of Egypt and periodical famines; the hanging gardens of Babylon and the horrors of Jewish captivity; the Greek Parthenon and dwellings without chimneys; the statues of Praxiteles and Phidias, and royal banquets without knives, forks, or spoons; the Roman Forum and the Roman populace crying for bread and circuses. Since, then, civilization is synonymous with education, and since the state of the arts is the _true measure of civili zation, the training that promotes the highest development of the arts must possess the greatest educational value. The use of tools quickens the intellect. The boy who begins to construct or form a machine, a tool, or anything, is compelled to think definitely, to deliberate, reason and conclude. As he advances he is brought into contact with powerful natural forces. If he would control those forces he must master their laws he must hence investigate the phenomena of matter, and thence he will be led to a study of the phenomena of mind. Thus the training of the hand reacts upon the mind, inciting it to excursions into the realm Of science in search of hidden laws and principles, to be utilized through the arts, in useful and beautiful things. Book A Text Book in the Principles of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book in the Principles of Education Classic Reprint written by Ernest Norton Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book in the Principles of Education In the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general principles, in terms of which the process of evolution through education is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject to-day. To accomplish this result in anything like an adequate manner, and at the same time make those practical applications of principles which a book on the "Principles of Education" may be expected to offer, it has been necessary to give to certain fundamental conceptions a very condensed and, I fear, somewhat abstract treatment. Such is especially the case in the chapter on "Conscious Learning," which, had space been clearly available, I should gladly have expanded by the addition of more illustration. In the chapter on "Readjustment, its Meaning, Conditions, and Methods," I have given the essential features of my theory of evolution. To the schoolman interested primarily in practice this may seem like a somewhat formidable introduction to so practical a subject as the Principles of Education should be. Book Education Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education Love, the basis of creation and of redemption, is the basis of true education. This is made plain in the law that God has given as the guide of life. The first and great commandment is, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind. To love Him, the infinite, the omniscient One, with the whole strength, and mind, and heart, means the highest development of every power. It means that in the whole being - the body, the mind, as well as the soul the image of God is to be restored. Book Mind Studies for Young Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mind Studies for Young Teachers Classic Reprint written by Jerome Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind Studies for Young Teachers There are many teachers who know little about psychology, and who have a desire to be better informed concerning its principles, especially its relation to the work of teaching. For the aid of such, this book has been prepared. But it is not a psychology, -only an introduction to it, aiming to give some fundamental principles, together with something concerning the phi losophy of education. Its method is subjective rather than objective, leading the student to watch mental pro cesses, and draw his own conclusions. Little of mind science, that is of use to the teacher, can be learned by reading books. N 0 subject is more dependent upon oh servation and experiment than this. When mind-growth and mental activities are understood by teachers, instruo tion will become scientific, and not, as is now too fre quently the case, empirical. If this little volume shall serve to hasten the time when teaching shall be more a profession and less a vocation, the author will have ao complished all he designed. Download or read book The Child s Mind Its Growth and Training written by W. E. Urwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training: Being a Short Study of Some Processes of Learning and Teaching The reasons for writing this book are sufficiently set forth in the introduction. It is not a treatise on psychology, still less a new and full-fledged theory of education. Nor, on the other hand, is it a com plete handbook for teachers. It is rather an attempt to set forth in simple and, as far as possible, untech nical language some results already obtained from a study of mind growth as an organic process, and to establish a clear and definite connexion between those processes of learning which mind possesses, and the methods by which it should be taught and trained. These chapters will, it is hoped, enable the young teacher to use in practice the facts which he learns in his outline study of physiology and psy chology, and provide the experienced teacher with a framework on to which he may fit the results of his experience without committing himself to any one philosophic system. Perhaps at a time when the problems of education are so widely discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Use Your Mind: A Psychology of Study The kindly reception accorded to the first edition of this book has confirmed the author in his conviction that such a book was needed, and has tempted him to bestow additional labor upon it. The chief changes consist in the addition of two new chapters, Active Imagination, and How to Develop Interest in a Subject, the division into two parts of the unwieldy chapter on memory; the addition of read ings and exercises at the end of each chap ter; the preparation of an analytical table of contents; the correction of the biblio graphy to date; the addition of an index; and some recasting of phraseology in the interest of clearness and emphasis. The author gratefully acknowledges the constructive suggestions of reviewers and others who have used the book, and hopes that he has profited by them in this revision.
