The pressure of life's ills was felt by them even more keenly than by many of their gentile neighbors. They also believed that a final triumph for humanity would be secured only through the special intervention of Deity. In fact, rarely or never did any neighboring peoples hold so tenaciously as did the Jews to the hope of a glorious divine deliverance. Throughout a long period of years they suffered repeated misfortunes, but each new calamity seemed only to strengthen their confidence in the coming of a better day when their present unhappy condition would be completely reversed. I By the beginning of the Christian era Jewish hopes had passed through a long period of growth. The beginnings of this process are veiled in obscurity, but very possibly there had 48 been a time when the ancestors of the Jews, like most other peoples in that ancient world, had depicted their fears and hopes in the form of myths reflecting a dread of nature's elemental forces and a hope of victory to be secured by the help of Deity. In historical times the Hebrews were unique in their efforts to bring all supernatural activities under the control of their own national god, Jehovah. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to Robert Govett (1813–1901), dissenting clergyman and author, who wrote as a scholar of biblical prophecy, primarily on the subject of the “exclusion” of believers in the Millennial Kingdom, an idea of which he conceived. The purpose of the book is threefold: (1) to describe Govett, his life, and his printed work; (2) to analyze Govett’s eschatological beliefs, especially those he originated; and (3) to investigate why a respected theologian in England, who had published over 180 books and tracts, disappeared from dissenting print culture early in the twentieth century. Govett’s doctrine of exclusion was heavily intertwined with most of his writings. It was a topic that he developed throughout his career. Yet, as the center of dispensationalism shifted to America, Govett’s views of the Rapture began to be seen as extreme. The book explains why Govett was eclipsed as the center of the evangelical movement shifted and its theology ossified. Since his death, Govett has been occasionally remembered in scholarship, but with increasing inaccuracies and skepticism. This book seeks to remove the mystery.

They have also struggled to determine with which institutions to attach themselves. Examining the idea of the church, or ecclesiology, within the Northern Protestant "establishment" in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, J. Michael Utzinger argues that evangelical ecclesiology was characterized by denominational ambivalence. This ambivalence meant that, while Northern Protestants valued their denominational affiliations, they also had no compunction to work outside of them. Trans-denominational affiliations, a result of this ambivalence, often acted as an agent for change that not only disturbed but revitalized their home denominations. Evangelicals believed their denominations were worth fighting for, even while they criticized their respective denomination's shortcomings. Faced with what they perceived to be the waning of their cultural influence, different parties of evangelicals in the late-nineteenth worked to change the vision of the church within their home denominations. Utzinger examines the theological sources of ecclesiological change (doctrine of the Holy Spirit, eschatology, and methods of cultural engagement) that evangelicals promoted, and how these influenced later fundamentalism and modernism. Further, he carefully charts the dynamics of conflict and compromise within the Northern Protestant establishment churches. Using the Northern Baptist Convention, the Presbyterian Church in the USA, and Disciples of Christ as case studies, Utzinger shows that, despite their infighting, evangelicals typically found ways to cooperate with one another in order to preserve their denominational institutions. In other words, the controversies' results were not only contention but compromise.
