Book The Portsmouth Road and Its Tributaries

Download or read book The Portsmouth Road and Its Tributaries written by Charles George Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portsmouth Road and Its Tributaries: To-Day and in Days of Old Still, our ancestors saw nothing of the romance of their times. That has been left for us to discover, and that glamour in which we see their age is one afforded only by the lapse of time. No coaching days had their romance, more obvious perhaps to ourselves than to those who lived in the times of road-travel but most certainly they had their own peculiar discomforts which we who are hurled at express speed in luxurious Pullman cars, or in the more exclusive and less sociable first, to our destination would never endure were railways abolished and the coaching era come again. I Should imagine that three-fourths of us would remain at home. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Hampshire Without Provincial Government, 1689-1690: An Historical Sketch The fall of the government of Sir Edmund Andros over New Eng land, an event in which neither the Province nor the people of New Hampshire had any part, left that Province without any government. The provincial officers of his appointment, civil and military, had no authority to act after his overthrow by the action of the people of Massachusetts. The four ancient towns, Portsmouth, Dover, Hamp ton, and Exeter, which then constituted that entire Province, were again in a state of independence, as they were when annexed to Massachusetts in the year 1641. They were now stronger in pcpu lation and in political organization. Fifty years' experience had given them an almost perfect system of domestic self-government. But for the exigencies of the times, which required a bond of political union, and unity of action, they might have remained in their independent state without inconvenience, so well regulated were their, domestic concerns, and orderly their inhabitants. Book College of William and Mary

Download or read book College of William and Mary written by Chris Dickon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of the American Revolution, the College of William and Mary was already into its eighth decade as the academic source of what the new nation would become and how it would relate to the larger world. Its land had been surveyed by George Washington, and its first honorary degree had been given to Ben Franklin. It would go on to educate two signers of the Declaration of Independence, three American presidents, and three justices of the Supreme Court. Chartered by British royalty in 1693, the college retains that connection to its roots into the 21st century. Remarkably through history, the College of William and Mary was, and remains, a public university¿one of 16 in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At a time in American history when the 18th-century thought and practice of Thomas Jefferson has become part of the contemporary conversation, the college from which he graduated in 1762 continues to pursue his simple notion that ¿worth and genius [be] sought from every condition of life.¿

Download or read book Lincoln Takes Command written by Steve Norder and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of one week during the Civil War in which the American president assumed control of the nation’s military. One rainy evening in May, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln boarded the revenue cutter Miami and sailed to Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. There, for the first and only time in our country’s history, a sitting president assumed direct control of armed forces to launch a military campaign. In Lincoln Takes Command, author Steve Norderdetails this exciting, little-known week in Civil War history. Lincoln recognized the strategic possibilities offered by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s ongoing Peninsula Campaign and the importance of seizing Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the Gosport Navy Yard. For five days, the president spent time on sea and land, studied maps, spoke with military leaders, suggested actions, and issued direct orders to subordinate commanders. He helped set in motion many events, including the naval bombardment of a Confederate fort, the sailing of Union ships up the James River toward the enemy capital, an amphibious landing of Union soldiers followed by an overland march that expedited the capture of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the navy yard, and the destruction of the Rebel ironclad CSS Virginia. The president returned to Washington in triumph, with some urging him to assume direct command of the nation’s field armies. The week discussed in Lincoln Takes Command has never been as heavily researched or told in such fine detail. The successes that crowned Lincoln’s short time in Hampton Roads offered him a better understanding of, and more confidence in, his ability to see what needed to be accomplished. This insight helped sustain him through the rest of the war.
