Book The Anglo Maratha Campaigns and the Contest for India

Download or read book The Anglo Maratha Campaigns and the Contest for India written by Randolf G. S. Cooper and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cross-cultural study of the political economy of war in South Asia. Randolf G. S. Cooper combines an overview of Maratha military culture with a battle-by-battle analysis of the 1803 Anglo-Maratha Campaigns. Building on that foundation he challenges ethnocentric assumptions about British superiority in discipline, drill and technology. He argues that these campaigns, in which Arthur Wellesley served with distinction, represent the military high-water mark of the Marathas who posed the last serious opposition to the formation of the British Raj. Dr Cooper asserts that the real contest for India was never a single decisive battle for the subcontinent. Rather it turned on a complex social and political struggle for control of the South Asian military economy. The author shows that victory in 1803 hinged as much on finance, diplomacy, politics and intelligence as it did on battlefield manoeuvre and war itself.

Book Wellington s Campaigns in India

Download or read book Wellington s Campaigns in India written by Reginald George Burton and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Arthur Wellesley--the Sepoy General When most people consider the military genius of the Duke of Wellington it is as the commander of the British Army in Portugal and Spain during the Peninsular War and in the Waterloo campaign of 1815 when he brought to ruin the former emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. However, Wellington (as Wellesley) learned his craft in India, commanding armies of native and British forces against the martial rulers of the sub-continent. This book chronicles Wellesley's campaigns during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War against Tipu Sultan which terminated in the fall of Seringapatam and the subsequent Dhoodiah Waugh insurgency. The Second Anglo-Maratha War brought him one of his hardest won victories at Assaye. This early and formative period his career earned him the rank of major-general, undoubtedly influenced his personality and honed his military capabilities--including his decisive understanding of tactics, discipline, logistics and diplomacy. In fact, these were the years that created the greatest British military figure of his age. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Wellington

Download or read book Wellington written by Rory Muir and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading Wellington historian’s fascinating reassessment of the Iron Duke’s most famous victory and his role in the turbulent politics after Waterloo. For Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington, his momentous victory over Napoleon was the culminating point of a brilliant military career. Yet Wellington’s achievements were far from over: he commanded the allied army of occupation in France to the end of 1818, returned home to a seat in Lord Liverpool’s cabinet, and became prime minister in 1828. He later served as a senior minister in Peel’s government and remained commander-in-chief of the army for a decade until his death in 1852. In this richly detailed work, the second and concluding volume of Rory Muir’s definitive biography, the author offers a substantial reassessment of Wellington’s significance as a politician and a nuanced view of the private man behind the legend of the selfless hero. Muir presents new insights into Wellington’s determination to keep peace at home and abroad, achieved by maintaining good relations with the Continental powers and resisting radical agitation while granting political equality to the Catholics in Ireland rather than risk civil war. And countering one-dimensional pictures of Wellington as a national hero, Muir paints a portrait of a well-rounded man whose austere demeanor on the public stage belied his entertaining, gossipy, generous, and unpretentious private self. “[An] authoritative and enjoyable conclusion to a two-part biography.” —Lawrence James, Times (London) “Muir conveys the military, political, social and personal sides of Wellington’s career with equal brilliance. This will be the leading work on the subject for decades.” —Andrew Roberts, author of Napoleon and Wellington: The Long Duel

Book excerpt: The Duke of Wellington made his military reputation not in fighting Napoleon's armies in the Peninsular War or at Waterloo - but in a series of colonial campaigns in the early days of British rule in India. Wellington - then Colonel Sir Arthur Wellesley - arrived in British-ruled Bengal in 1797 and over the next seven years fought a series of engagements, including sieges and pitched battles, against such foes as the bandit chief Dhoondiah Waugh, and the Mahratta confederacy, . He was uniformally successful and left India a General on the threshold of one of history's greatest military careers. This full official account of Wellington's Indian military apprenticeship, supported by excellent and detailed maps drawn up by the Army's Intelligence Branch, will interest students of the Duke's life, Napoleonic buffs and all those fascinated by Britain's role in India.

Book Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia 1966 1970

Download or read book Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia 1966 1970 written by Frank Joseph Shulman and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the harvest of recent doctoral dissertations on South Asia, principally from North America and Western Europe, but exclusive of theses from universities in South Asia itself. The yield—1305 dissertations based on research carried out during the early and middle nineteen-sixties and brought to completion between 1966 and 1970—is even greater than one would have guessed, eloquent testimony to the expansion of South Asian studies in the West over the last decade. Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia seeks to be a comprehensive compilation of recently completed theses dealing in whole or in part with the former civilizations and the contemporary affairs of Ceylon, India, Nepal and Pakistan. At the same time, this work provides striking testimony of the dynamic growth of Asian Studies outside the subcontinent and particularly in the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France, where most of the major centers of scholarship are presently found. It is an interdisciplinary work covering the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences.
