Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the Great Awakening in the American colonies and continuing through contemporary Latin America, where revolution and revivalism have been central to sociopolitical change, Modern Christian Revivals demonstrates the enduring relevance of Christian revivalism. Half of the contributors focus on the United States, from Puritan New England through the Old South to Billy Graham and Pat Robertson; the others discuss revivalism in England, Norway, China, and Canada, chronicling influential as well as less frequently studied movements. This volume explores long-held assumptions about revivalism and illustrates its central role in the Christian tradition.

Book The Life and Legacy of George M ller

Download or read book The Life and Legacy of George M ller written by George Müller and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 1786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musaicum Books presents to you this meticulously edited George Müller collection. "The word of God alone is our standard of judgment in spiritual things... the Holy Spirit alone can teach us about our state by nature, show us the need of a Saviour, enable us to believe in Christ, explain to us the Scriptures, help us in preaching, etc. The first evening that I shut myself into my room, to give myself to prayer and meditation over the Scriptures, I learned more in a few hours than I had done during a period of several months previously. But the particular difference was, that I received real strength for my soul in doing so." George Müller (1805-1898) was a Christian evangelist and the director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. He cared for 10,024 orphans during his lifetime, and provided educational opportunities for the orphans to the point that he was even accused by some of raising the poor above their natural station in British life. He established 117 schools which offered Christian education to more than 120,000. The theology that guided George Müller's work was shaped by an experience in his middle twenties when he "came to prize the Bible alone as his standard of judgement". Müller wrote frequently about the stewardship of money and the non-reliance on earthly riches, and how God would bless the man who kept to these principles, and felt that laying his own experiences bare would prove the truth of his claims. His personal income, from unsolicited gifts (he refused any kind of salary) rose from £151 in 1831 to more than £2,000 in 1870. However, he retained only around £300 a year for himself and his family, the rest he gave away. Müller's faith in God strengthened day by day and he spent hours in daily prayer and Bible reading. Content: Paths to Power The Pursuit of God The Divine Conquest How to be Filled with the Holy Spirit The Root of the Righteous The Knowledge of the Holy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one was more radically critical of the ministry and the inherited Church policy that surrounds it than Roland Allen (1868-1949), whose prophetic writings constantly challenge the whole mission of the Christian Church, and many of his most important essays are collected here along with contributions about him. After studying at Oxford, his clerical training was in Leeds. He went as a missionary to China for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG), where he stayed for twenty years. His experience convinced him that missionary methods needed changing, and that St Paul had more to offer than contemporary practice, and in particular that ministry should be centred in the laity. These ideas, unpopular at the time, have grown in importance, and Roland Allen's influence is now greater than at any time. In this volume, Paton, with the co-operation of Grubb and King, has written on the central concerns of Allen's life and how his witness gave rise to many fruitful enterprises in different parts of the world. Many new writings of Allen's are included in the volume, and Grubb tells the story of the Survey Application Trust which, for over half a century played a formative and pioneering part in the mission of the church. This title adds a lot of new information and throws fresh light on the modern history of many Christian enterprises, and extends current debate over the role of the laity.

Book Divine Healing The Formative Years 1830 1890

Download or read book Divine Healing The Formative Years 1830 1890 written by James Robinson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine healing is commonly practiced today throughout Christendom and plays a significant part in the advance of Christianity in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Such wide acceptance of the doctrine within Protestantism did not come without hesitation or controversy. The prevailing view saw suffering as a divine chastening designed for growth in personal holiness, and something to be faced with submission and endurance. It was not until the nineteenth century that this understanding began to be seriously questioned. This book details those individuals and movements that proved radical enough in their theology and practice to play a part in overturning mainstream opinion on suffering. James Robinson opens up a treasury of largely unknown or forgotten material that extends our understanding of Victorian Christianity and the precursors to the Pentecostal revival that helped shape Christianity in the twentieth century.
