Topics cover the spectrum from the molecular level of organization to population biology and community ecology. The series seeks especially to review (1) fields in which an abundant recent literature will benefit from synthesis and organization, or (2) newly emerging fields that are gaining recognition as the result of recent discoveries or shifts in perspective, or (3) fields in which students of vertebrates may benefit from comparisons of birds with other classes. All chapters are invited, and authors are chosen for their leadership in the subjects under review.

Book Foraging Behavior

    Book Details:
  • Author : A.C. Kamil
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1987-05
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 700 pages

Download or read book Foraging Behavior written by A.C. Kamil and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-05 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foraging behavior has always been a central concern of ecology. Understanding what animals eat is clearly an essential component of under standing many ecological issues including energy flow, competition and adaptation. Theoretical and empirical developments in the late 1960's and 1970's led to a new emphasis in the study of foraging behavior, the study of individual animals in both field and laboratory. This development, in turn, led to an explosion of interest in foraging. Part of the reason for this explosion is that when foraging is studied at the individual level, it is relevant to many disciplines. Behaviorists, including ethologists and psychologists, are interested in any attempt to understand behavior. Ecologists know that a better understanding of foraging will contribute to resolving a number of important ecological issues. Anthropologists and others are applying the ideas coming out of the study of foraging behavior to problems within their disciplines. These developments led to a multidisciplinary symposium on foraging behavior, held as part of the 1978 Animal Behavior Society meetings in Seattle, Washington. Many ecologists, ethologists and psychologists participated or attended. The symposium was very successful. generating a high level of excitement. As a result, the participants decided to publish the proceedings of the symposium (Kami1 & Sargent 1981).

Book CORMORANTS DARTERS PELICANS

Download or read book CORMORANTS DARTERS PELICANS written by Paul A. Johnsgard and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 1993-05-17 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is an elusive darter stalking its prey in a tropical swamp, a flock of cormorants cooperatively driving a frenzied school of fish into the shallows of a lake or river, or brown pelicans plummeting into the ocean, these ancient groups of web-footed birds in the order Pelecaniformes offer remarkable behavioral and structural diversity. As fish eaters, they are highly susceptible to poisons and serve as biological indicators for toxic materials. In this first worldwide survey of cormorants, darters, and pelicans, Paul A. Johnsgard provides a color illustration of nearly every species and a variety of anatomical drawings, and he summarizes the species' status and biology, including ecology, behavior, distribution, plumage, and morphology. The first section of the book focuses on comparative biology, including all 32 species of Cormorants and shags (Phalacrocoracidae), two species of darters (Anhingidae), and seven species of pelicans (Pelecanidae). The accounts cover species' phylogeny, taxonomy, zoogeography, comparative anatomy, behavior, reproductive biology, population and breeding dynamics, and conservation biology. Detailed line drawings of the heads of all species noting age or seasonal variations help the reader identify and distinguish between each species. The book also includes keys to each species and the origins of their scientific and vernacular names.
