Book excerpt: In March 2, 1870, the Iowa Midland Railroad Company was organized at Des Moines, Iowa under General Law and obtained possession of rights and properties of the Mississippi, Maquoketa & North-Western Railroad Company. In that same year the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Company, seeing the potential of the proposed Midland route, advanced $55,000 to the Midland Railroad Company. The Chicago & Northwestern immediately supplied the Midland with money to refund the loan of the CB & Q. By the middle of September 1870, the Midland began to come under the control of the Chicago & Northwestern. The Chicago & Northwestern then went on to build the Midland Branch. By 1871, the operation of the Midland Road passed under the complete control of the Chicago & Northwestern Company, though a separate organization was still maintained. The Midland was actually under the supervision of the Boone Iowa Subdivision and was designated by the C & NW as the Anamosa Branch.
