Book excerpt: The Middle Temple Murder by J. S. Fletcher Frank Spargo, a young London journalist looking for a great story, stumbles upon a crime scene on Middle Temple Lane. A porter found the body of an elderly man on the steps leading to one of the rooms in the Middle Temple. There is nothing about the man that can help identify him, but a piece of paper with the address of a certain lawyer. Spargo feels that this could be his big story and gets drawn into the mystery. Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863-1933) was an English author and journalist, one of the leading writers of detective fiction in the golden age. After his career as a journalist, Fletcher began writing poetry, then historical fiction, and finally moved on to writing detective stories he is best known for. All this led to the appearance of Mr. Aylmore, M.P., on the stand. And Spargo knew and felt that it was that aspect that the crowded court was waiting for. Thanks to his vivid and realistic specials in the Watchman, everyone there had already known well and completely the mass of evidence represented by the nine witnesses who had been in the box before Mr. Aylmore entered it. They also knew the facts that Mr. Aylmore had allowed Spargo to print after the club interview, organized by Ronald Breton. Why, then, the extraordinary interest aroused by the appearance of the parliamentarian?

Book excerpt: First in the New York Times–bestselling series and winner of the Edgar Award: A new rabbi in a small New England town investigates the murder of a nanny. David Small is the new rabbi in the small Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing. Although he’d rather spend his days engaged in Torah study and theological debate, the daily chores of synagogue life are all-consuming—that is, until the day a nanny’s body is found on the rain-soaked asphalt of the temple’s parking lot. When the young woman’s purse is discovered in Rabbi Small’s car, he will have to use his scholarly skills and Talmudic wisdom—and collaborate with the Irish-Catholic police chief—to exonerate himself and find the real killer. Blending this unorthodox sleuth’s quick intellect with thrilling action, Friday the Rabbi Slept Late is the exciting first installment of the beloved bestselling mystery series that offers a Jewish twist on the clerical mystery, a delightful discovery for fans of Father Brown and Father Dowling or readers of Faye Kellerman’s suspense novels set in the Orthodox community.

  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Bad Debts written by Peter Temple and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melbourne in winter. Rain. Wind. Pubs. Beer. Sex. Corruption. Murder. A phone message from ex-client Danny McKillop doesn’t ring any bells for Jack Irish. Life is hard enough without having to dredge up old problems: his beloved football team continues to lose, the odds on his latest plunge at the track seem far too long and he’s still cooking for one. But then Danny turns up dead and Jack has to take a walk back into the dark and dangerous past. Peter Temple is widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest writers, and his novels have been published in twenty countries. During his lifetime he worked extensively as a journalist and editor, before teaching editing and media studies at a number of universities. His novels, among them the Jack Irish series, Truth, The Broken Shore and An Iron Rose, are celebrated as some of the best crime writing in English. Temple died in March 2018. ‘Bad Debts is wonderful, quintessentially Australian stuff, full of authentic, diehard types, old culture cops, backstreet humour and inner-city dialogue you can overhear in the bars of certain hotels, the ones with framed pictures of horses on the walls. It is the genuine article and an absolute pearler of a read.’ Australian Book Review ‘Like his characters, Temple has a spare, funny delivery, and a sharp eye for a target...Temple writes with the urgency of someone who wants to disrupt an official investigation, and his story is kept up like taut wire. Brothers and sisters in crime, worship at the Temple.’ Australian ‘The prose is tight, the pace breathless, the dialogue inspired, and Temple’s take on the Victorians’ football mania hilarious.’ Sun-Herald ‘Temple can be as tough as nails, but also displays a wickedly droll sense of humour which, like the work of, say, the American writer Joe R. Lansdale, frequently has the reader holding his sides with laughter even while immersed in some particularly unpleasant scenario...With Bad Debts Temple has created a world-class novel.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘Unlike many good crime stories, this one can be related to our immediate environment. It incorporates icons and mediums which are very much part of most Australians’ lives...These are the elements which make Bad Debts such a good crime novel. From the unforgettable cast of characters to the events which pre-destine their lives, the story literally explodes off the pages.’ Geelong Advertiser 'One of the world’s finest crime writers.’ The Times ‘Having read the new novels of Michael Connelly and Martin Cruz Smith, I have to say that Temple belongs in their company. Australia is a long way off, but this bloke is world-class.’ Washington Post ‘Fortunately, Text Publishing last year began the welcome and long-overdue project of ensuring that Temple’s entire backlist, which includes four Jack Irish novels and five stand-alones, is available on these shores...Irish is tough and resourceful, yes, but it’s the way Temple brings out his fear, desire, humor, and self-doubt that ranks him among the most interesting series heroes.’ Booklist US
