Topics include: · Why Iran is viewed as a threat by most Middle East countries · What resource is more important than petroleum in regional power plays · What's really behind the fighting between Sunni and Shia · How Saudi Arabia inadvertently feeds the violence in Iraq and beyond · How monarchies like those in Jordan and Qatar are more open and progressive than the so-called republics With answers that will surprise many Americans, and covering a vast history and cultural complexity that will fascinate any student of the world, What Every American Should Know About the Middle East is a must-read introduction to the most critical region of the twenty-first century.

Book Postcards from the Middle East

Download or read book Postcards from the Middle East written by Chris Naylor and published by Lion Books. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly married, Chris and Susanna Naylor set off for a new life in the Arab world - living first in Kuwait, then Jordan and finally Lebanon. In a region never far from the news, they discovered their expectations - of war, terrorism, desert sand dunes, men in white robes and veiled women, camels and Kalashnikovs, indeed their own reasons for being there - were to be constantly challenged. As they found out, the reality bore little resemblance to their pre-conceptions. Postcards from the Middle East is a tale of love from one family's experiences: a story of work, schooling, friendships, worship and shared family life, lived out in precious communities against a back drop of world-changing events and spectacular scenery. The Naylors had never experienced such hospitality, danger, wildlife spectacles or snow before they moved to the Middle East. Their story provides a multi-coloured window on an extraordinary and rapidly changing Arab world.

Book Deconstructing Sexuality in the Middle East

Download or read book Deconstructing Sexuality in the Middle East written by Pinar Ilkkaracan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the contemporary dynamics of sexuality in the Middle East, this volume offers an in-depth and unique insight into this much contested and debated issue. It focuses on the role of sexuality in political and social struggles and the politicization of sexuality and gender in the region. Contributors illustrate the complexity of discourses, debates and issues, focusing in particular on the situation in Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine and Turkey, and explain how they cannot be reduced to a single underlying factor such as religion, or a simple binary opposition between the religious right and feminists. Contributors include renowned academicians, researchers, psychologists, historians, human rights and women's rights advocates and political scientists, from different countries and backgrounds, offering a balanced and contemporary perspective on this important issue, as well as highlighting the implication of these debates in larger socio-political contexts.

Book The Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book The Middle East and North Africa written by Florian Zemmin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects reflections on secularity from the Middle East and North Africa. To highlight proximate connections as well as resonances with debates elsewhere, it includes premodern contributions from the region as well as Jewish thought from Europe that have provided significant references for modern appropriations of secularity. The texts, for the most part previously untranslated, reflect commonalities within the region as well as its great diversity. Thus, while Islam is a common reference for most of our authors, the selections point to its varied invocations in the interest of differing political ends. Others write from a Christian or Jewish perspective, or subscribe to non-religious intellectual traditions. They range from premodern Muslim jurisprudents and philosophers to Ottoman statesmen, Arab socialist and nationalist intellectuals of the interwar period, Iranian revolutionaries, Israeli novelists, and finally, post-secular intellectuals, lay and religious, predominantly from the former Islamic heartland: modern Arab states and Iran. Several introductions weave together the swathe of topics raised in the discussions, beginning with a schematic presentation of the concerns that undergird the volume's organization.

Book Chasing bin Laden

Download or read book Chasing bin Laden written by Barbara K. Janik and published by Barbara Janik. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A secret truth: On the early morning of August 16, 2006, Osama bin Laden was arrested in Brooklyn by the New York FBI Terrorism Task Force. They were acting on a tip called in by Barbara Janik. Janik tells her story: Chasing bin Laden takes readers along with Janik on an emotional journey through the hidden world of lay investigations, which is charged with high-stakes puzzle solving, Arabic message boards, and anxiety-provoking collaborations with the FBI. A Pulitzer prize-winning journalist backs her up! In The Killing of Osama bin Laden, Seymour Hersh states that “bin Laden was a prisoner of the ISI [Pakistani intelligence] at the Abbottabad compound since 2006…” What does this mean? Janik’s memoir tells the story of how, when, and where Osama bin Laden was arrested. He was likely transferred in 2006 from the United States to the compound in Pakistan, where he remained in custody until the 2011 raid. But how does Janik know this stuff? Janik, who is a historian, computer expert, and former adjunct professor, is a master at research and “Google-fu”. She worked with the FBI. The truth of the arrest was revealed to her by the FBI through a series of cloak-and-dagger phone conversations. Yet, can she prove she isn’t making this up? On her website, Janik has uploaded phone records and emails showing the times and content of her conversations with the FBI. There is also a PDF of message board conversations from early 2007. She’s been telling the same story since 2006. Want to know more? Click “Add to Cart”. You won’t regret it.

Book Masculinities and Displacement in the Middle East

Download or read book Masculinities and Displacement in the Middle East written by Magdalena Suerbaum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in 2011, many Syrians fled to Egypt. This ethnographic study traces Syrian men's struggles in Cairo: their experiences in the Egyptian labour market and efforts to avoid unemployment; their ambitions to prove their 'groomability' in front of potential in-laws in order to get married; and their discontent with being assigned the label 'refugee'. The book reveals the strategies these men use to maintain their identity as the 'respectable Syrian middle-class man' - including engaging in processes of 'Othering' and the creation of hierarchies – and Magdalena Suerbaum explains why this proved so much more difficult for them after Morsi was toppled in 2013. Based on in-depth interviews, conversations and long-term participant observations, Suerbaum identifies Syrian men's emotional struggles as they undergo the experience of forced displacement and she highlights the adaptability and ultimate elasticity of constructed masculinities. The Syrians interviewed share their memories and their understandings of sectarianism and growing up in Syria, their interactions with the Egyptian and Syrian states, and their experiences during the Syrian uprising. The book takes an intersectional approach with close attention to the 'refugee' as a classed and gendered person.
