Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siena, blessed with neither the aristocratic nor the ecclesiastical patronage enjoyed by music in other northern Italian centers like Florence, nevertheless attracted first-rate composers and performers from all over Europe. As Frank A. D'Accone shows in this scrupulously documented study, policies developed by the town to favor the common good formed the basis of Siena's ambitious musical programs. Based on decades of research in the town's archives, D'Accone's The Civic Muse brilliantly illuminates both the sacred and the secular aspects of more than three centuries of music and music-making in Siena. After detailing the history of music and liturgy at Siena's famous cathedral and of civic music at the Palazzo Pubblico, D'Accone describes the crucial role that music played in the daily life of the town, from public festivities for foreign dignitaries to private musical instruction. Putting Siena squarely on the Renaissance musical map, D'Accone's monumental study will interest both musicologists and historians of the Italian Renaissance.

Book Selected Odes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pindar
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 0856686689
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book Selected Odes written by Pindar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pindar's Odes, blending beauty of poetic form and profundity of thought, are one of the wonders of Ancient Greece. Composed in the first instance to commemorate athletics victories, they fan out like a peacock's tail to illuminate with brilliant subtlety and imagination the human condition in general, and how our moments of heroic achievement are inevitably tempered by our mortal frailties. This edition aims to make for the first time a selection of these wonderful, but complex, poems accessible and enjoyable not only to scholars and advanced students but especially to sixth-form students and non-Classicists (including anyone interested in Pindar's influence on English poetry). While particular attention is paid to elucidating Pindar's cryptic chains of thoughts and to explaining the significance of the myths in the odes, much greater help than usual in this series is given with translating the Greek. The selection, which contains Pindar's most famous poem (Olympian 1) and two particularly charming mythical stories (in Pythian 9 and Nemean 3), illustrates Pindar's range and variety by including odes commemorating victors at each of the four major games. Greek text with translation, commentary and notes.

Book Section 27 and Freedman s Village in Arlington National Cemetery

Download or read book Section 27 and Freedman s Village in Arlington National Cemetery written by Ric Murphy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its origination, Arlington National Cemetery's history has been compellingly intertwined with that of African Americans. This book explains how the grounds of Arlington House, formerly the home of Robert E. Lee and a plantation of the enslaved, became a military camp for Federal troops, a freedmen's village and farm, and America's most important burial ground. During the Civil War, the property served as a pauper's cemetery for men too poor to be returned to their families, and some of the very first war dead to be buried there include over 1,500 men who served in the United States Colored Troops. More than 3,800 former slaves are interred in section 27, the property's original cemetery.

Book Introducing Comparative Politics

Download or read book Introducing Comparative Politics written by Stephen Orvis and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized thematically around important questions in comparative politics—who rules? what explains political behavior? where and why?—Introducing Comparative Politics, Fifth Edition by Stephen Orvis and Carol Ann Drogus, integrates a set of extended case studies of 11 core countries directly into the narrative. Serving as touchstones, the cases are placed within the chapters where they make the most sense topically—not separated from the theory or in a separate volume—and vividly illustrate issues in cross-national context. The book’s hybrid organization gives students a more holistic view of comparative politics.
