Download or read book The Microscopy of Drinking Water Classic Reprint written by George Chandler Whipple and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopy of Drinking-Water This book has a twofold purpose. It is intended primarily to serve as a guide to the water-analyst and the water-works engineer, describing the methods of microscopical examination, assisting in the identification of the common microscopic organisms found in drinking-water and interpreting the results in the light of environmental studies. Its second purpose is to stimulate a greater interest in the study of microscopic aquatic life and general limnology from the practical and economic standpoint. The work is elementary in character. Principles are stated and briefly illustrated, but no attempt is made to present even a summary of the great mass of data that has accumulated upon the subject during the last decade. The illustrations have been drawn largely from biological researches made at the laboratory of the Boston Water Works and from the reports of the Massachusetts State Board of Health. In considering them one should remember that the environmental conditions of the Massachusetts water-supplies are not universal, and that every water-supply must be studied from the standpoint of its own surroundings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Microscopical Examination of Drinking Water: With an Appendix the of Examination of Air The author of this work cannot say with many, that the demand for the first edition has been so great as to call speedily for a second. It has, notwithstanding, enjoyed a steady sale; and if slow it is only what might be expected, when the special nature of the subject is taken into account with the little progress science had made in relation to it when the book was first published. The practical utility of the method and arrangement employed in this guide has been tested by its adoption in the Army Medical School for several years, and it has been found that, by its aid, even persons little acquainted with Micro-zoology and, Phytology have very readily arrived at the nature and name of objects they had never seen before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopical Examination of Potable Water The publishers of the science series having asked the writer to prepare a monograph on the Microscopical Examination of Potable Water, I will endeavor to comply; though that a civil engi neer should be expected to prepare anything of value on a subject which has engaged the attention of the most eminent chemists and biologists is something of a surprise. Possibly, however, the fact that studies in this direction have occupied my leisure hours for a number of years, and have led to the production of a number of more or less useful papers thereon, may be to some extent an explanation; but it is sincerely hoped that the expectations of neither publishers nor readers will be raised too high. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Handbook on Potable Water As an analytical and consulting chemist, the author of this handbook is frequently called upon to give information on the subject of water in its relations to disease. Two bulletins from his pen on this subject have already been issued by the Iowa State Board of Health, for the benefit of the public; and from the favor with which they have been received, he has been induced to prepare the present treatise, designed especially for the use of physicians, sanitarians, and chemists. It is hoped that the subject is presented in a sufficiently interesting manner to be worthy of their study, and that the facts are expressed in scientific language capable of being easily understood by every intelligent person. The impurities in drinking-water that arc oftenest the cause of disease and death are discussed here. The natural and artificial processes of removing them from water are also given due consideration. But all methods of analysis are avoided, except some of the elementary qualitative tests given in the appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Micro-Organisms in Water: Their Significance, Identification and Removal The existing literature in connection with the Bacteriology of Water is so extensive, and is scattered through such numerous publications both English and foreign, that we venture to think an urgent necessity has arisen for a work in which this subject is specially discussed. We have, therefore, in the following pages endeavoured to present in a connected form an account of the more important investigations which have been carried out in this department of Bacteriology, in the hope that it may prove of service both to the student and investigator, as well as to those who, like engineers and medical officers of health, are practically concerned with the hygienic aspects of water-supply. Book Water Purification Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Purification Classic Reprint written by Joseph W. Ellms and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants.
