This information the Author has endeavored to supply in the following Treatise; in which he has aimed to combine, within a moderate compass, that information in regard to the use of his Instrument and its Appliances which is most essential to the working Microscopist, with such an account of the Objects best fitted for his study as may qualify him to comprehend what he observes, and thus prepare him to benefit Science whilst expanding and refreshing his own mind. The sale of five large Editions of this Manual, with the many spontaneous testimonies to its usefulness which the Author has received from persons previously unknown to him, justify the belief that it has not inadequately supplied an existing want; and in the preparation of the new Edition now called-for, therefore, he has found no reason to deviate from his original plan, whilst he has endeavored to improve its execution as to every point which seemed capable of amended treatment. In his account of the various forms of Microscopes and Accessory Apparatus, the Author has not attempted to describe everything which is used in this country; still less, to go into minute details respecting the construction of foreign instruments. He is satisfied that in nearly all which relates both to the mechanical and the optical arrangements of their instruments, the chief English Microscope-makers are quite on a level with, if not in advance of, their Continental rivals; but, on the other hand, the latter have supplied instruments which are adequate to all the ordinary purposes of scientific research, at a lower price than such could until recently be obtained in this country. Several British makers, however, are now devoting themselves to the production of Microscopes which shall be really good though cheap; and the Author cannot but view with great satisfaction the extension of the manufacture in this direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope: Being the Article by Andrew Ross Microscope, the name of an instrument for enabling the eye to see distinctly objects which are placed at a very short distance from it, or to see magnified images of small objects, and therefore to see smaller objects than would otherwise to be visible. The name is derived from the two Greek words, expressing this property, Mikros, small, and Skopeo, to see. So little is known of the early history of the microscope, and so certain is it that the magnifying power of lenses must have been discovered as soon as lenses were made, that there is no reason for hazarding any doubtful speculations on the question of discovery. We shall proceed therefore at once to describe the simplest forms of microscopes, to explain their later and more important improvements, and finally to exhibit the instrument in its present perfect state. In doing this we shall assume that the reader is familiar with the information contained in the articles "Light." "Lens," "Achromatic," "Aberration," and the other sub-divisions of the science of Optics, which are treated of in this work. The use of the term magnifying has led many into a misconception of the nature of the effect produced by convex lenses. Too much is assumed to be known, or is left to be filled in by an instructor. None of these books gives to the private worker, in simple and concise language, detailed directions for the many processes that he must learn in order to make practical use of the microscope. A large amount of apparently unproductive work must be done before the microscope can be advantageously used as a working tool. It is of the highest importance that this work be done at as early a stage as possible, and without waste of time. This book is professedly for beginners and private workers, and is designed to afford the means of acquiring this necessary training. The methods here described are practical methods which have stood the test of general use. They are the methods employed by scientific men the world over. It would not be possible, in most cases, to give credit to the originators of the processes, as the processes have been the result of slow growth, and have been so modified by different workers that they have become common property. Credit can, therefore, be given only in this general way to the books and workers that have furnished the material which has been drawn upon.
