Book excerpt: This book presents the first overview of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event in the southern Iberian paleomargin, in the western Tethys. The study of catastrophic events that affected the ecosystems in the past is of great interest, because it offers the possibility of establishing models that can be applied to current and future environmental changes. The book provides comprehensive information on the changes in marine ecosystems in connection with a global massive extinction, the Early Toarcian, and with the deposition of black shales, global warming and a disruption of the carbon cycle. In addition, the book describes the incidence of this event in this part of the Tethys close to the connection with the Protoatlantic, the Hispanic Corridor. Special attention is paid to sedimentological and ichnological aspects, fossil content (macroscopic and microscopic), and geochemistry. It also presents the facies changes related to fragmentation of the shelf and the evolution to hemipel agic troughs and swells in this paleomargin. Lastly, it characterizes this anoxic event in under-researched outcrops from southern Spain and compares the findings with those in well-known sections from northern and central Europe. This book offers a unique resource for all researchers interested in the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, but also in oceanic anoxic events that occurred during the Mesozoic in general, because of their similarity to recent climatic changes.

This period represents the major part of Tom Barnard's career with microfossils, which actually began rather earlier, but in 1949 his first postgraduate students were registered. Since then some 150 students have worked for higher degrees studying foraminifera, ostracods, calcareous nannofossils, dino of Research flagellates and palynomorphs, in company with a series Assistants and Visiting Scientists. The nature of micropalaeontology at 'UC' under Tom Barnard has always been unashamedly biostratigraphical. As a result many students have entered and continue to enter the petroleum industry, not least of all because their mentor has always had a pragmatic view of academic research and its direction. Despite this emphasis, with a particular attention to Mesozoic foraminifera, a major investigation of Recent Caribbean foraminiferal faunas has been carried out and most recently MSc classes have worked with material from the continental shelf of southern Africa. Work with Mesozoic ostracods was initiated in 1956 and during the past decade a growing number of students have concentrated on calcareous nannofossils. There are approximately 600 distinct described living species and several thousand fossil species of polycystines. Radiolarians in general, and polycystines in particular, have recently been shown to be a major component of the living plankton and important to the oceanic carbon cycle. As fossils radiolarians are also fairly common, and often occur in sediments where other types of fossils are absent. This has made them very valuable for certain types of geologic research, particularly estimating the geologic age of the sediments containing them, and as guides to past oceanic water conditions. As our current understanding of the biology, and even taxonomy of the living fauna is still very incomplete, evolutionary studies based on living polycystines are still rare. However, the common occurrence of numerous specimens for many species, and in a wide variety of oceanic environments, provides an excellent opportunity to study the processes of biologic evolution in the fossil record. Book excerpt: The geological evolution of Central Asia commenced with the formation of a complex Precambrian–Palaeozoic orogen. Cimmerian blocks were then accreted to the southern margin in the Mesozoic, leading to tectonic reactivation of older structures and discrete episodes of basin formation. The Indian and Arabian blocks collided with Asia in the Cenozoic, leading to renewed structural reactivation, intracontinental deformation and basin development. This complex evolution resulted in the present-day setting of an elongated Tien Shan range flanked by large Mesozoic–Cenozoic sedimentary basins with smaller intramontane basins distributed within the range. This volume presents multidisciplinary results and reviews from research groups in Europe and Central Asia that focus on the western part of the Tien Shan and some of the adjacent large sedimentary basins. These works elucidate the Late Palaeozoic–Cenozoic tectono-sedimentary evolution of the area. Emphasis is given to the collision of terranes and continents and the ensuing fault reactivations. The impact of climatic changes on sedimentation is also examined.
