Book Peasant Economics

Download or read book Peasant Economics written by Frank Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revised and expanded edition of a popular textbook on the economics of farm households in developing countries. The second edition retains the same building blocks designed to explore household decision-making in a social context. Key topics are efficiency, risk, time allocation, gender, agrarian contracts, farm size and technological change. For these and other topics, household economic behaviour represents the outcome of social interactions within the household, and market interactions outside the household. A new chapter on the environment combines exposition of economic tools not previously covered in the book with examination of household and community decision-making in relation to environmental resources.

Book Capitalist Development and the Peasant Economy in Peru

Download or read book Capitalist Development and the Peasant Economy in Peru written by Adolfo Figueroa and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyses the functioning of the peasant economy in Peru in the context of the present predominantly capitalist system. The central themes are the economic relationships of the peasantry to the rest of the economy of the country and the role of the peasant economy in the entire system, together with the changes that have taken place in that role over time. These themes are investigated by means of a study in detail of a sample of peasant communities in the most traditional and backward region of Peru, the southern sierra. The historical process has generated in Peru one of the most extreme cases of inequality, rural poverty and cultural duality. Nowhere else does the notion of 'economic duality' seem more applicable. Thus an investigation of the case of Peru has methodological value for the understanding of the peasant economy throughout Latin America, and the results of this survey have important implications for the whole region.

Book Development Microeconomics

Download or read book Development Microeconomics written by Pranab Bardhan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional development economics has recently been revolutionized by the application of new economic tools and concepts. Development Microeconomics is the first in a series of books which will look at the entire spectrum of development economics issues, combining the strengths of conventional developmental thought with the insights of contemporary mainstream economics. The main new conceptual tool used is the application of the theory of imperfect information and the effects this has on the the behaviour of economic agents. This helps to explain why perfect competition models rarely have success when dealing with developing economies. The authors also stress the necessity of balance in dealing with many of the classic problems in development studiesthe importance of both the individual as economic agent and cultural norms as the framework of social behaviour; the dual relationship between equity and efficiency in economic policy-making; the importance of market rivalry and the potential of market breakdown. Designed specifically for graduate students, this book analyses the key microeconomic problems facing the very poorest sectors of developing economies. It utilises simple theoretical models, and is presented in a compact and analytical form. High technical sophistication is avoided, and the only pre-requisite is some familiarity with the tools of general microecomic theory at a first-year graduate or advanced undergraduate level.

Rural economies encompass both agricultural and non-agricultural enterprises; hence, rural economics is concerned with a wider range of issues than agricultural economics, which is more predominantly concerned with food systems. Attempts are made by rural development and finance to address more significant issues that are present in rural economy. The absence of economic activities and poverty in rural areas are often the root causes of these economic problems, which are often tied to the movement of people from rural areas. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florencia E. Mallon examines the development of capitalism in Peru's central highlands, depicting its impact on peasant village economy and society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Traditional Economy A traditional economic system is one that is founded on ancient practices, historical precedents, and long-held beliefs. A traditional economy is a type of economic system in which the commodities and services that are produced by the economy, as well as the rules and manners in which they are distributed, are influenced by the traditions, practices, and beliefs that are prevalent in the economy. There is a strong correlation between this type of economic structure and rural and agriculturally-based nations. Bartering and trading are the defining characteristics of a traditional economy, which is often referred to as a subsistence economy. When there is a small surplus of products produced, they are often distributed to a controlling authority or landowner. If there is any surplus of goods, they are also distributed.
