Currently more than 60% of the total annual rubberwood produced by rubber plantation is used as fuelwood. Rubberwood has the potential for both indoor and outdoor application. For exterior applications, preservative treatment is needed to extend the service life of rubberwood. The objectives of this study are to (1) assess treatability of rubberwood with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) preservative, (2) evaluate the natural decay resistance and efficacay of CCA on rubberwood, and (3) study the microdistribution of CCA components in rubberwood cells.

Book excerpt: The performance and environmental safety of CCA treated wood rely on the extent of post-treatment storage of CCA treated wood. In relation to this, a study on the comparative leachability of CCA-treated refractory and permeable heartwoods was carried out on four Malaysian hardwoods, namely Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis), Perah (Elateriospermum tapos), Acacia mangium and Rengas (Gluta spp.) Overall, this research findings may be useful as a guide for the safe application of CCA preservative and support the continue usage of the preservatives in our timber industry.
