Book Physics and Philosophy Volume 4

Download or read book Physics and Philosophy Volume 4 written by Paul K. Feyerabend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of the writings of Paul Feyerabend is focused on his philosophy of quantum physics, the hotbed of the key issues of his most debated ideas. Written between 1948 and 1970, these writings come from his first and most productive period. These early works are important for two main reasons. First, they document Feyerabend's deep concern with the philosophical implications of quantum physics and its interpretations. These ideas were paid less attention in the following two decades. Second, the writings provide the crucial background for Feyerabend's critiques of Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn. Although rarely considered by scholars, Feyerabend's early work culminated in the first version of Against Method. These writings guided him on all the key issues of his most well-known and debated theses, such as the incommensurability thesis, the principles of proliferation and tenacity, and his particular version of relativism, and more specifically on quantum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microcosm, 1883, Vol. 3: The Organ of the Substantial Philosophy; Devoted to the Discoveries, Theories, and Investigations of Modern Science, and Their Bearings Upon the Religious Thought of the Age If the circumstances, motives and influences so conspire and so powerfully assault the individual as to completely over-ride and coerce the will beyond its power to resist, and thus constrain the individual to do the right or to do the wrong, then there is no virtue in the former nor vice in the latter. If a man com mits murder, constrained thereto by circum stances, motives, or influences that his will could not resist, he is not criminally guilty, unless by previous yieldings to evil influences when he could have resisted them, he has measurably rendered his will impotent as to questions of right and wrong. Lynn Margulis and Dorion Sagan have put it all together, literally, in this extraordinary book, which is unlike any treatment of evolution for a general readership that I have encountered before. A fascinating account that we humans should be studying now for clues to our own survival."—From the Foreword by Dr. Lewis Thomas Microcosmos brings together the remarkable discoveries of microbiology in the later decades of the 20th century and the pioneering research of Dr. Margulis to create a vivid new picture of the world that is crucial to our understanding of the future of the planet. Addressed to general readers, the book provides a beautifully written view of evolution as a process based on interdependency and their interconnectedness of all life on the planet.
