Has been reprinted (with considerable modifications) from the Contempo rary Review, in which it originally appeared as an article on Pleasure and Desire. An Objection is sometimes taken to the application of the term 'science' to such studies as these. It is said that a Science must necessarily have some department of actual existence for its subject-matter: and. There is no doubt that the term Ethical Science might, according to usage, denote studies that deal with the actually existent: viz. Either the department of Psychology that deals with pleasures and pains, desires and volitions, moral sentiments and judgments, as actual phenomena of individual human minds; or the department of Sociology dealing with similar phenomena, as exhibited by the larger organizations of which individual human beings are ele ments. We Observe, however, that comparatively few persons pursue these studies from pure curiosity, in order merely to ascertain what actually exists, has existed, or will exist in time. Most men wish not only to understand human action, but also to regulate it; they apply the ideas 'good' and 'bad, ' 'right' and 'wrong, ' to the conduct or institutions which they describe; and thus pass, as I should say, from the point of View. Of Psychology or Sociology to the point of View of Ethics or Politics. It is true that the mutual implication Of the two kinds of study is, on any theory, very close and complete, though the precise nature and extent of their connexion is. Book A Historical Introduction to Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Historical Introduction to Ethics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Verner Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The criticism of moral systems constitutes a special section. In this way the repetition of objections which hold against a number of systems has been avoided. In the classroom, how ever, the author has departed from this plan. Students require and often request some kind of criticism before the lecturer passes from one system to another. The best plan in actual practice is to indicate the chief lines of criticism in concluding the analysis of an author, and toward the end of the course to summarize the various systems, giving a general and special criticism of the theories of morality. The collection of the points of criticism into one division, while having special advan tages in a printed work, need not interfere with the carrying out of the above method in practice, for it is a very easy matter to turn from one part of a book to another. In the choice of the types of ethical theory scarcely any two men would agree, and the author can scarcely hope to escape the accusation of most serious omissions. Some of these omissions will, however, be pardoned by one who bears in mind that the present work does not pretend to be a history of ethics, that the number of types must be relatively few, lest the student be lost in a maze of detail, and that the author can only hope to introduce the student to the field of ethical speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Critical Theory of Ethics While the book is an analysis, in outline, of the main elements of the theory Of ethics rather than a discussion of all possible detailed questions, it will' not be found the less fitted, I hope, to give a student an idea of the main methods and problems of contemporary ethics. Other teachers, indeed, may agree that a general outline is better than a blanket-mortgage spread over and forestalling all the activity of the student's mind. Book The Elements of Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Ethics Classic Reprint written by James H. Hyslop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics The present work is designed as an introductory treatise upon the fundamental problems of theoretical ethics, and therefore to obtain standing ground from which to consider the practical questions that are affected by general principles. The book may seem rather an elaborate treatise for an introduction, but so great are the complications of ethical problems, so manifold are their interests, and so various have been opinions regarding them, that a writer to-day must choose between the perfunctory task of pro ducing a mere syllabus of words and the more important duty of saying enough to satisfy the wants of those who desire more than platitudes, and who wish some insight into the complexities of the case. The analysis of various questions has been made as complete as reasonable limits would allow, with the special pur pose Of trying to throw some light on the perplexities of ethical theories, and to present the author's conclusions regarding them. This purpose has involved a very exhaustive application of the analytic method, which may try the patience of those who desire synthetic and comprehensive results. But the writer is con vinced that we shall never get out of the wilderness of scholastic controversy and see-sawing with traditional theories until the analytic method is first carefully applied and our exact where abouts determined. We may then give a synthetic survey of the field without embroiling ourselves in the hocus - pocus of endless and futile discussions about 'words that may have a thousand meanings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts and Values: Studies in Ethical Analysis When people disagree about the value of something - one saying that it is good or right and another that it is bad or wrong - by what methods of argument or inquiry can their disagreement be resolved 1 Can it be resolved by the methods of science, or does it require methods of some other kind, or is it open to no rational solution at all? The question must be clarified before it can be answered. And the word that is particularly in need of clarification, as we shall see, is the word disagreement. Let us begin by noting that disagreement has two broad senses In the first sense it refers to what I shall call disagreement in belief. This occurs when Mr. A believes p, when Mr. B believes not-p, or something incompatible with p, and when neither is content to let the belief of the other remain unchallenged. Thus doctors may dis agree in belief about the causes of an illness; and friends may disagree in belief about the exact date on which they last met.
