This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Methodist Pulpit, 1852, Vol. 5 God. Yet this would be a point easy to show. The Church would never have been shorn of her locks and have lost her aggressive, world-subduing power, had she not, by dallying with the Delilah of wordly ambition and power, lost the ia dependence of her pulpit. The superstitious mummeries and base corruptions of Romanism, could never have acquired their wonderful ascendancy among men, had the pulpit remained unmanacled and stood forth the bold and free champion of the truth. But with the death of the Apostles, came that falling away from thefaith, which they had predicted. The whole christian system by degrees underwent a miserable change. Grievous wolves, not sparing the flock, succeeded to the place of the faithful shepherds. The holy, self-denying ministers of Christ, strong' in faith and in the Holy Ghost, who in the first centuries wielded so successfully the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, and who had found it mighty to put to flight the armies of the aliens and to pull down the strong holds of sin, were now no longer found or if found, so few and scattered as to exert but a feeble influence. The pulpit was no longer filled by men of God. The power of faith was not there. It no longer hurled the terrors of the law against sin, or pressed home upon the conscience the guilt of the sinner. Sunk in degeneracy, instead of the honor which comes from God, it sought the popularity, pomp and power of the world. The pure and life-giving Gospel was no longer preached in its simplicity and power, but instead of sermons, little was heard from the sacred place but the sub iimated twattle of metaphysical reasonings, mystical divinity, Aristotelian categories and reading the lives of saints. The pulpit became the stage where mountebank priests obtained the vulgar laugh by exercising the lowest species of wit - the churches, shambles, where the ministers of the sanctuary drove a shameless trade in the price of sins. Reserves his principal strength for the close of his dis course. His peroration consists sometimes of a summing up of his arguments; though it is generally a concentration of the whole subject upon the conscience. He gives you no long string of inferences, suggesting new lines of thought, and opening up new fields of investigation, to spoil the unity and effect of the sermon. But a few earnest appeals, warnings, encouragements, as the case might be - not unfrequently mingled with fervent ejaculations - complete the hour, beyond which the discourse is seldom extended. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Pulpit, Vol. 1 The Conference was not held in a place Of worship; for there was no place of worship large enough to hold the body Of spectators. The number of the Conference itself was just half the number assembled in this place to-day. We see here eight hundred. At Brooklyn we saw four hundred, represent ing the different Conferences; but the body Of spectators was so large that a large music-hall, called the Royal Academy Of Music, was engaged for the occasion. It is, in fact, a theatre, and it did look a little incongruous to see this dignified ecclesiastical assembly in such a place. But, of course, the eye soon gets used to that kind Of thing, and our friends across the water are not perhaps so sensitive to the sacredness Of places as we are in superstitious England. Book The Methodist Episcopal Pulpit

Download or read book The Methodist Episcopal Pulpit written by D. W. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Pulpit: A Collection of Original Sermons From Living Ministers of the M. E. Church The collection of this volume of sermons, from living ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was undertaken with the approval and co-operation of several brethren eminent for their piety and wisdom, as well as for their official standing in the church. It was hoped that the enterprise, if successful, would result in an addition of some value to an important department of our church literature. Our preaching, from the origin of Methodism, having been for the most part extemporaneous, few preachers have written and preserved manuscript sermons enough to form a volume. Even many of our most eminent divines and pulpit orators have left nothing behind them except the remembrance of their living efforts, and the results those efforts are continuing to produce. Hence the limited number of contributions that have been made to this branch of our literature. We refer, indeed, with just pride, to the sermons of Wesley, Watson, and Clarke. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Pulpit to the Poor-House: And Other Romances of the Methodist Itinerancy House is a romance from real life. The line between fact and fiction can be drawn with difficulty by the author. It was first used as a sermon in the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, Providence, R. I. It was then rewritten and re vised, and was used as an address at conventions and Annual Conferences. It awakened, such deep interest that requests for its publication came from every part of the country. Many ministers solicited permission to use it as an aid in call ing the attention of the Church to the needs of the veterans of Methodism. It now goes forth accom panied by other story-sermons of a kindred character. This attempt at preaching by making believe is a humble effort to imitate teaching by parable. If the thousands who may read will be as greatly inter osted as the thousands who have heard, no one will.
