Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Hymn-Book and Its Associations The Founders of Methodism were well aware of the importance of hymns and psalms as aids to a religious life. John Wesley published a small volume for this purpose, before the first Society was formed; and during the year 1739 he published a much larger volume, containing selections from various authors, with many of his brother Charles's original hymns. This book reached a third edition the same year. The number of Charles Wesley's hymns, written and published up to about ten years before his death, was not less than six thousand. Nearly all these poetical tracts were in extensive demand, some of them were often reprinted, and large editions were sold both in England and Ireland. From the very beginning of Methodism, these hymns have been made an abundant blessing to the thousands of readers into whose hands they have fallen, sometimes as helps to devotion for individual Christians, or in the service of song - at the out-door preaching as well as in the more social means of grace. They have been largely used in the work of conversion, in relieving daily toil, and especially in times of suffering, bereavement, and death. Book The Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Church

Download or read book The Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Church written by Charles S. Nutter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Church: An Annotated Edition of the Methodist Hymnal I am pleased to have a part in preparing a book for people interested in hymnody. The plan of the book is much the same as that followed in Hymn Studies, but this work is far more elaborate and valuable than that well-known book. The hymns are given in full, with careful criticism and historic notes. The book contains also biographical sketches of all the authors of hymns and composers of tunes. It is one of the duties of the pastor to be familiar with his Hymnal, and it is the privilege of the intelligent layman as well. This work contains many valuable facts and opinions, criticisms and approbations that can be found nowhere else. The Methodist Hymnal is a valuable book with a remarkable history. Before the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church several hymn books of Wesleyan origin were used in this country. Among these were Select Hymns, Hymns and Psalms, Redemption Hymns, and Mr. Wesley's first Pocket Hymn Book; but the Methodist people in America had no book in common. At the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1784, A Collection of Psalms and Hymns for the Lord's Day was prepared for the new organization. It was printed in London in 1784, and came to America in sheets with the famous Sun day Service. The "collection," however, contained only one hundred and eighteen selections, and was altogether inadequate to meet the needs of the growing Church. About 1790 a Pocket Hymn Book, printed in Philadelphia, appeared containing a pastoral letter to the "members and friends" of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and signed by Bishops Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury. It contained some three hundred hymns, and was sold for half a dollar. This book was essentially a reprint of a Pocket Hymn Book edited and published by Robert Spence, a Methodist class leader of York, England. All subsequent official hymn books of the Methodist Episcopal Church are enlargements and improvements of the Coke-Asbury book. The editorial work of preparing this annotated edition of the Methodist Hymnal has been very great, as can readily be seen. Dr. Wilbur Fisk Tillett, of Vanderbilt University, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, has been associated with me in this work, and much of the value of the book is due to his careful and painstaking labor. We send forth this work confidently hoping that it will be appreciated and praying that it may be of some use in advancing the kingdom of our Christ in the earth. Book Hymn Book of the Evangelical Association Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymn Book of the Evangelical Association Classic Reprint written by Evangelical Association Of Nort America and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn-Book of the Evangelical Association A new book compiled by the late Rev. John Flesher, and published in 1854, was doubtless a great improvement on its predecessors, and it has also served the Connexion for upwards of thirty years. While it is admitted that a change of hymn book may be an inconvenience to some, it can hardly be said that we are changing too often. Considering how new hymn writers continue in the order of Providence to be raised up; the constantly increasing number of hymn books; the progress made in hymnology and church music; and, owing to the spread of education, the altered tastes and preferences of vast numbers who worship with us - it can scarcely be expected that any hymn book, however care fully compiled, will, without addition or alterations, meet the wants of our church for more than thirty years. The present Hymnal has been compiled by a committee appointed by the Conference of 1882. The appointment was made in response to a loud call for a Hymn Book more suitable for the public worship of our congregations than the one in use. The committee soon found that the work involved much more labour than was at first anticipated. The richness of our age in good hymns increased rather than diminished the difficulty. There were not only the accumulated treasures of the past, but also the abundant stores of modern hymnologists, from which to make selections. With a much less supply of material the work of the committee would have been considerably easier. In compiling the book the aim has been to retain the older hymns which are endeared by many hallowed associations to the hearts and memories of Christians of every name, and to add the choicest productions of our own times. Although the collections of Watts and Wesley still supply the largest number bf hymns for a good hymnal, especially for Methodist worship, yet in these pages will be found selections from numerous other authors and translators. The names of these, as affixed to the hymns and contained in a separate list, will show that no church has had a monopoly of the gift of sacred song. Book The Revision of the Hymn Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church

Download or read book The Revision of the Hymn Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church written by Methodist Episcopal Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revision of the Hymn Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church: Report of the Committee to the Bishops It will be seen from these facts that the book now to be offered to the Methodist Episcopal Church is the seventh in number, and that the average life, if we may so speak, of each collection has been less than sixteen years. It will also be seen that the expres sion, the old Hymn Book, is, like all allusions to duration and association, limited and relative. As soon as the new Hymn Book shall have been published, the existing work will be, to the present generation, the old' Hymn Book. But to all who came upon the stage prior to May, 1849, and subsequent to 1836, the Bangs revision with the supplement was the old book, and the present collection the new; while to Nathan Bangs the pocket edition, with supplement, . Was the old, and his own work 'the new. Those, therefore, who desired the permanent use of the book of 1849, and remonstrated against its revision, had not made themselves familiar with the history of Methodist Hymn Books, or else expected that the inexorable law of change would in this case be set aside. After the separation of the Methodist Episco pal Church, South, its General Conference in 1846 ordered the preparation of a collection specially designed for its members, Which was in some respects a decided improvement on the book of 1830 with supplement. The various smaller bodies of Method ists have employed books prepared by themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Hymns: For the Use of the Wesleyan Methodist Connection of America IN presenting this collection of hymns to the Wesleyan Methodist Connection, and the public, the Publisher deems it proper to advert to the pro cess by which it has been brought into existence. At the organization of the Connection, which was by a Convention held at Utica, New York, May, 1843, there was an understanding that a Hymn Book would soon be issued suited to the wants of the Connection; and the expectation thus created led to such pressing calls for the book from different sections of the country, that the Publisher was led to put it to press without bestowing upon it that amount of labor necessary to make the work What it was desired it should be. The few changes which they have introduced into some of the old hymns, will, they trust, justify themselves. The addition also of dates tothe names of authors and composers will be helpful as a silent reminder of the continuity of the Faith. Nor has it been forgotten that a Hymn Book has other uses than that of public worship and should contain some material which will seldom be sung. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Hymns: For the Use of the People Called Methodists The New Supplement to A Collection of Hymns for the use of the People called Methodists, originally published by John Wesley in 1780, has been compiled under the direction of a Committee appointed by the Conference in 1874. The Collection of 1780 has been circulated by millions, and has been recognized as a priceless treasure, not only by Methodists, but by many other disciples of the One Master. As a testimony to Scripture doctrine and Christian experience, as a monument of piety, a manual of devotion, and a bond of fellowship, it can never cease to be precious to all who cherish the spirit of its authors, and wish well to that revival of religion of which they were the instruments while, in instances almost innumerable, personal associations have invested portions of its contents with tender, and even sacred interest. The Conference therefore determined that it should be retained in use, and, while generally revised, should undergo no alteration which would affect its substance or impair its identity. But as altered circumstances, often resulting from the growth of the Connexion, and occasions repeatedly arising in public, social, and domestic life have rendered additional hymns necessary, an attempt has been made to meet the want which has been long felt, and which was by no means adequately provided for by the valuable Supplement published about forty-five years since.
