Book The Metaphysics of the School

Download or read book The Metaphysics of the School written by Thomas Norton Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metaphysics of the School, Vol. 2 The author thinks it necessary to remind his readers that the Scholastic doctrine touching the genesis and constitution of material substances necessarily includes a consideration of the efficient cause, without which it cannot be completely understood. This important Chapter in the Book on Causes will occupy the greater part of the next Volume; not only because it is fruitful of important metaphysical questions, but likewise because it offers the most appropriate place for considering the harmony that exists between the metaphysics of the School and the latest physical discoveries. He takes occasion to notice an error which has inadvertently been allowed to appear in the first Volume. It occurs in the sixty-fifth Proposition, (Book III, Ch. ii, art. 4, p. 347). An illustration is there given, as follows: 'In like manner, water is composed of oxygen and hydrogen; a Mode is, consequently, required for the combination of these two, in order to the evolution of a new substantial Form.' The statement in Italics is not true; since the combination is the evolution of the form of water and the corruption of the oxygen and hydrogen. A mode is, therefore, neither necessary nor possible. There are two clerical errors in the same Volume, which might cause perplexity. In p. 204, l. 9, 'perfection' should be 'perception'; and in the same page, l. 25, 'division' should be 'indivision.' This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Metaphysics and Logic, Vol. 2 of 4 On this doctrine, a faculty is nothing more than a general term for the causality the mind has of origin ating a certain class of energies; a capacity only a general term for the susceptibility the mind has of being affected by a particular class of emotions. All mental powers are thus, in short, nothing more than names determined by various orders of mental phaeno mena. But as these phaenomena differ from, and re semble, each other in various respects, various modes of classification may, therefore, be adopted, and, conse quently, various faculties and capacities, in different views, may be the result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epistemology, Vol. 2 of 2 95. Transition to Sense Perception. Terms and Distinctions. - When examining the terms and data of our general inquiry in the opening chapter, we distinguished (8) between knowledge proper and mere consciousness; between reflex consciousness and the implicit, concomitant awareness which the conscious subject necessarily has of itself in all its conscious states or activities, without which these could not be conscious, and which is usually described as direct consciousness; between non-cognitive (volitional, emotional, etc.) and cognitive consciousness; between the interpretative objectivity of those cognitive states of consciousness which fall short of judgment, and the formal or consciously asserted objectivity of the judgment itself. We have also been obliged, in our exposition of the doctrines of Descartes, Kant and Scholasticism (77), to discuss at some length the nature and validity of our awareness of the self as a concrete, existing, individual reality. Presupposing what has been said already in those connexions we may be brief in our present exposition of the cognitive value or significance of the facts of consciousness and memory, - an exposition which will serve as a necessary and natural transition from intellectual knowledge to dense knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysic, Vol. 2 of 2: In Three Books, Ontology, Cosmology and Psychology A general consideration Of these questions must have te gard to two possible modes of answering them. Conceivably the Real Existence which appears to us under forms of action 50 homogeneous, may be not merely of like, but of quite identical nature throughout, and may owe the differ ences which characterise it to subsequent accessory con ditions. But it is equally conceivable, that Beings originally distinct, and such as cannot be comprehended in the totality of their nature under any one notion, Should yet be bound by the plan of the world, in which they are all included, to express their own inmost and heterogeneous Being, where they come into mutual relations, in a language Of common currency, i.e. By means Of the properties of matter. Book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1

Download or read book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1 written by Robert Boyd and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophically Thinking about World Religions is different from other works in the discipline today. It deviates from the typical approaches used for the study of world religions. Its goal is to engage readers in thinking hard about world religions, not about the data surrounding those traditions. By focusing on philosophical questions, each reader should be challenged to do their own investigations that may reveal the heart of these traditions. Another stance that this project takes that distinguishes it from other texts in the discipline is that it advocates an inclusivist perspective regarding the world religions. Pluralism, which is the predominate assumption today, ends either in contradiction or in the development of a metatheory that dismisses crucial distinctions between the various traditions or eliminates some ancient religions because they do not fit the metatheory. By taking an open inclusivist approach, all religious traditions may engage at the table of dialogue. The final essay is about justice and social affairs. While that discussion is couched within the context of a particular tradition, each religious tradition must have the discussion. But it must be more than an intrareligious dialogue; it must become an interreligious dialogue.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics: A Lecture Ring out the old, Ring in the new; Ring out the false, Ring in the true. But it must not be forgotten that the old is not always the false, nor the new always the true, as was illustrated in a notice once given of a book - perhaps one of the popular contributions to modern science - ia which notice it was remarked, by way of commenda tion, that the book in question had in it much that was new and also much that was true; and by way of eriti cism, that what was true in it was old and what was new in it was false. The only rational rule of mental pro cedure is to prove all things, whether new or old, and hold fast to that which is good. By the faithful asser tion of this catholic principle of judgment, we loyally venture to believe that our queen is destined to recover the crown and royal state of which she has been de prived, and to hold again her position in the universi ties of the world, less exclusively and pretentiously, no doubt, and yet with an empire subject to her restored sceptre, embracing whole kingdoms which, under the old regime, were not yet discovered. The science of the present reveals, daily, that it is not self-sufficient, and that, just as a building of large and imposing dimen sions requires beneath its super-structure a foundation that sinks out of the view of the senses, so science rests on the transcendental and unseen realities of the world of metaphysics. Faith is more profound than reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A System of Metaphysics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Metaphysics Classic Reprint written by George Stuart Fullerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Metaphysics Some of the material in Chapters I, II, and V of this volume has already appeared in the Psychological Review; and Chapters XV, XVI, and XVII have been reprinted without very much change. They first appeared as articles in the same journal. In Chapter XXXIII I have made some use of two articles published in the Popular Science Monthly. The chapters on Space and Time are reprinted from the Philosophical Review with little change except that, in Chapter XI, some new matter has been added. To the editors of the journals mentioned, Professor Cattell, Professor Baldwin, and Professor Creighton, my thanks are due for their courtesy in permitting me to reprint as I have done. Thus, about one-fourth of the present volume has already seen the light. It is right that I should say that nothing that has already appeared has been taken up into the book as an after thought. From the beginning the work has been a unit; it has been for a number of years on my hands, and the publication of the papers above mentioned was due largely to a curiosity to see how the doctrines advocated would impress others. It was, perhaps, hardly fair to present them deprived of their setting, and this injustice, if injustice it be, is remedied now. Book Witnessing Their Faith

Download or read book Witnessing Their Faith written by Jay Alan Sekulow and published by Sheed & Ward. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was ratified in 1791, the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States sought to protect against two distinct types of government actions that interfere with religious liberty: the establishment of a national religion and interference with individual rights to practice religion. Since that time, no question has so bedeviled the U.S. Supreme Court as finding the best way to interpret and apply the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. In this unique and timely book, Jay Sekulow examines not only the key cases and their historical context that have shaped the law concerning church-state relations, but also, for the first time, the impact of the religious faith and practices of Supreme Court Justices who have ruled in each case. Covering cases from the teaching of religion in public schools and the use of federal funds for parochial schools to today's debates about the Pledge of Allegiance and public displays of the Ten Commandments, Witnessing Their Faith is essential reading for anyone interested in the history and future of religious freedom in America.
