Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Metaphysics Lastly, I wished to adapt the book especially to the Oxford or preceptorial method of instruction. Accord ing to this method, the text-book and the lectures in class should serve to give a general View of the subject but should play a far less important part than the stu dent's independent reading and study. The results of this reading and study should be expressed in a weekly, or better fortnightly, essay submitted to the preceptor and afterward discussed with him in an informal con ference held preferably in his private study and attended by not more than three or four students. This enables the teacher to deal with his students as individuals and to vary greatly the amount and kind of reading he as signs to each. Some will do not only more difficult reading than others but three or four times the amount of reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Philosophy: For Common and High Schools The great aim of this little book is to present the most elementary facts of Natural. Philosophy, in such a way as to exercise the child constantly in observing phenomena and in drawing inferences from what he observes. Whenever a child is old enough to ask such questions, as, "What makes the thunder," or, "Where does the rain come from," or to exclaim "How pretty the clouds are this evening," it is old enough to begin the study of natural philosophy. When such questions are asked the mind is awake to see the phenomena of nature, and is ready to receive instruction. They show the presence of a desire to know, and the absence of power to learn without assistance; and in this way they lead us to believe that the time has come when the work of instruction should begin. Moreover, the study of natural philosophy is easy, and interesting to young pupils, because, when properly presented, it brings new sights to the eye, and new sounds the ear, in a way to be especially pleasant to children. The simplest experiments awaken enthusiasm in the mind of a child, and such as be may he able to repeat by himself are the source of the greatest delight. The chief changes are in the form and exposition. The fundamental doctrine is more systematically set forth, and is unfolded into more detailed inferences; but the general view is unchanged. In spite of many well-meant critical washings, I still remain wallowing in the ancient meta physical and idealistic mire, and am even confirmed in my error by further reflection. Book A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Richard Green Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy Ten years have elapsed since this work first appeared in permanent form from the hands of the stereotyper. During this time, the author has been gratified to learn that sixteen editions have been called for by the pub lic but this gratification has been mingled with re gret that he has been unable from time to time to make such improvements as he knew were needed, and which the progress of science, as well as a more extended ex perience, seemed imperiously to demand. He gladly avails himself of the present opportunity, afforded by the new publishers into whose hands it has fallen, to make such improvements as in his opinion will render it more worthy of the liberal patronage it has received; for although it is a long time since the author has had any pecuniary interest in the work, he hopes that it is not true that he has had no further solicitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics: A Lecture Ring out the old, Ring in the new; Ring out the false, Ring in the true. But it must not be forgotten that the old is not always the false, nor the new always the true, as was illustrated in a notice once given of a book - perhaps one of the popular contributions to modern science - ia which notice it was remarked, by way of commenda tion, that the book in question had in it much that was new and also much that was true; and by way of eriti cism, that what was true in it was old and what was new in it was false. The only rational rule of mental pro cedure is to prove all things, whether new or old, and hold fast to that which is good. By the faithful asser tion of this catholic principle of judgment, we loyally venture to believe that our queen is destined to recover the crown and royal state of which she has been de prived, and to hold again her position in the universi ties of the world, less exclusively and pretentiously, no doubt, and yet with an empire subject to her restored sceptre, embracing whole kingdoms which, under the old regime, were not yet discovered. The science of the present reveals, daily, that it is not self-sufficient, and that, just as a building of large and imposing dimen sions requires beneath its super-structure a foundation that sinks out of the view of the senses, so science rests on the transcendental and unseen realities of the world of metaphysics. Faith is more profound than reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics: A Study in First Principles Philosophy, as a special form of mental activity, seeks to answer these two questions: How is knowledge possible? What is the true nature of reality? The first question deals with the knowing subject and his relation to the Oh jcet. The aim is to give an exposition and a theory of the knowing process and to unfold its implications. The sec ond question deals with the nature of the object viewed as a thing in itself. The first question belongs to the theory of knowledge; the second belongs to metaphysics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of Metaphysics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Metaphysics Classic Reprint written by John S. Mackenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Metaphysics The chief difficulty of such an attempt lies in the necessity of combining two requirements that appear almost incompatible with one another. A text-book that is to be of any real value to the student must be alive. To point to the various problems as if they were speci mens in a museum, would obviously be to fail entirely in the object that is aimed at -viz., that of bringing out the vital relationships of the various points that have to be considered. On the other hand, a text-book of this kind must not aim at superseding, in the minds of those who use it, the works to which it is an intro duction. I have kept both these points steadily in view; but I can hardly hope that I have been completely successful in avoiding the dangers to which I refer. My aim at least has been to produce a book which is a living unity within itself, and which yet points continu ally outwards to the larger life of the speculative thought of the world. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metaphysic of Experience, Vol. 4 of 4 Accordingly, the cardinal and ultimate distinc tion between the domains of Logic and Ethic, as practical sciences, is this, that Logic speaks of the ways in which we must think, if we would avoid error in thinking; Ethic of the way in which we must choose, if we would avoid blame in choosing; both thinking and choosing being necessities of our nature. And not only are both of them necessities of our nature, but they are inseparable one from the other it is only by abstraction that they can be sundered. When we call the domain of Logic thought or reasoning, and that of Ethic practice or conduct, we do so only by conceiving thought as perpetually choosing a particular end, namely, knowledge or truth of fact, prior to com paring and judging facts, and practice as per petually comparing the preferabilities of alterna tive actions, prior to the action Of choosing between them. NO thought is possible without volition, and no volition possible without thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
