Book excerpt: This is a series of lectures that critiques the idealization of the state by British Hegelians like Bosanquet. Since Hegel and his followers are in the crossfire the focus is very much on the relation of the particular to the universal as embodied in citizen & state. A considerable effort is exerted in fleshing out how the individual will converges with the group will. Its an interesting read but is a lot of smoke. Themes are raised consistently without pointing out a possible resolution. Well written but not all that penetrating. A good source for studying ideas of British Hegelianism.

Book excerpt: First published in 1953, this seminal introduction to political philosophy is intended for both the student of political theory and for the general reader. Book Idealism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Idealism Routledge Revivals written by Alfred Ewing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1934, this book evaluates the characteristic doctrines of the idealism which dominated philosophy during the last century. It seeks to combine realism, as to epistemology and physical objects, with a greater appreciation of views which emphasize the unity and rationality of the universe. This work is not a history and does not try to compete with any histories of idealism but it instead reaches an independent conclusion on certain philosophical problems by criticising what others have said. The book considers differing arguments in order to determine their validity.

Book Reappraising J A Hobson Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Reappraising J A Hobson Routledge Revivals written by Michael Freeden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. A. Hobson was one of the most influential social, economic and political theorists of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. In this volume, first published in 1990, eight scholars reassess the importance and relevance of his work today and affirm him as a major British thinker. These original studies place Hobson in context by explaining his intellectual antecedents: Cobden, Ruskin, nineteenth-century social and psychological theories and economic thought. The book provides an overview of the novelty and incisiveness of Hobson's contribution to British liberal theory and radical practice. Historians, economists, social and political theorists and students of international affairs will find this an important book for a fuller understanding of early twentieth-century British progressive thought.
