Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metals Used in Construction: Iron, Steel, Bessemer Metal, Etc., Etc Desirous to make our remarks as complete an ex position as possible of the most recent researches into the metals employed in construction, we do tlkreader a service by placing before him the following allies of analyses of iron ores in use, for which we are indebtef?o an able paper by Mr Edward Riley, late of l celebrated Dowlais Iron Works, read before the Sociev of Engineers. After stating that the clay ironstone-k had, until recently, been almost exclusively used for manufacture of iron until the discovery of the black band ironstones, and that this latter ore was found in thick layers, three feet to four feet in thickness, while the clay ironstones only occurred in thin layers a few inches in thickness in the mine shale, this authority proceeds to say: Before the introduction of railways. Book excerpt: In cooperation with the DBZ, The advantages of using metal in architecture are rediscovered. In recent years metal as a construction material has been experiencing a renaissance. Its diverse qualities and versatility mean that it is an ideal material for many different applications. Gone are the days when metal was only used for the roofing and facades of industrial sheds. In the meantime architecture and industry have discovered its aesthetic qualities, using it to cover theatres, museums, and exhibition buildings with shimmering layers of copper and titanium. It enables extravagant forms to be constructed, and even in low-cost, prefabricated buildings, metal can be used in new and interesting ways. It has become an integral factor in creating intelligent architectural solutions which meet the requirements of clients, investors and architects. "Metal Architecture" documents some 21 international projects which show not only the creative elements but also the economic advantages of metal. Of particular note, are the Drive-Inn Restaurant in Slovenia, loft apartments in Los Angeles, and the harbour control tower in Lisbon. The buildings are presented with numerous colour illustrations and detailed plans. The book concludes with technical information on the uses of metal in construction, practical details and tips on using metal in planning and construction.

Download or read book Construction Materials written by Manuel Bustillo Revuelta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction Materials is a comprehensive textbook covering all raw materials and products related to the construction processes, and not only those applied to building structures. The book is organized to help readers achieve competent knowledge about construction materials. At the beginning of the book the author offers the general concepts, definitions, and standards adopted worldwide for these materials to be used along the book. The central part of the text covers the primary construction materials required to manufacture concrete and mortars, the most relevant construction materials in the last century. Expressly, concrete and mortar are treated in detail in dedicated chapters per component. In addition, the author addresses other relevant materials in construction such as ceramic materials, metals and alloys, bituminous materials, and geosynthetic materials. Finally, since the construction industry is one of the largest single waste producing sector in the world, the last chapter outlines the main types and characteristics of construction and demolition waste (e.g. recycled aggregates). The book appeals to students but also professionals interested in construction materials and construction and civil engineering.

This new edition has been expanded to cover recent developments such as the use of glass as a structural material. It also now examines the contribution that material selection makes to sustainable construction practice, considering the availability of raw materials, production, recycling and reuse, which all contribute to the life cycle assessment of structures. As well as being brought up-to-date with current usage and performance standards, each section now also contains an extra chapter on recycling. Covers the following materials: metals concrete ceramics (including bricks and masonry) polymers fibre composites bituminous materials timber glass. This new edition maintains our familiar and accessible format, starting with fundamental principles and continuing with a section on each of the major groups of materials. It gives you a clear and comprehensive perspective on the whole range of materials used in modern construction. A must have for Civil and Structural engineering students, and for students of architecture, surveying or construction on courses which require an understanding of materials.
