Book Handcraft in Wood and Metal

Download or read book Handcraft in Wood and Metal written by John Hooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handcraft in Wood and Metal: A Handbook of Training in Their Practical Working for Teachers, Students,& Craftsmen In preparing this work the authors have endeavoured to show the possibilities of craftwork as an educational subject, and to briefly indicate its cultural aspects. One of the prejudices against handcraft or so-called "manual work" has been that it had more value from a physical than an educational or cultural standpoint, with the result that "handcraft" in schools has too frequently been classed as "carpentry", The authors think that lessons based upon the historical phases of craftwork, particularly in the development of types of construction in furniture and metalwork, and the growth of tools from prehistoric times, together with the study of simple applied art as displayed in historic work, will do much to increase the value of handcraft in schools. Whilst the work has been prepared primarily for the teacher, the aim has been to render treatment of the subject such as to make the work of value and interest to the craftsman, and a useful guide for the pupil or student. As an aid to class teachers in helping on a technical side in central schools, they hope it will find a place among the books pertaining to craft and general education. It is hoped further that the work will be regarded as a collection of suggestions and data, rather than an attempt to produce a series of models. The authors believe that at least one aspect of handcraft has been almost entirely neglected in the past, i.e. the artistic side; and, whilst not claiming any special merit for the design of the models dealt with, they have endeavoured to embody some artistic merit in the designs, and have tabooed the meaningless joints and collection of joints which have only a limited mechanical value. Book Metalwork for Craftsmen

Download or read book Metalwork for Craftsmen written by Emil F. Kronquist and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by a master craftsman who has devoted much of his life to teaching, is an exceptionally useful handbook in the techniques of sheet metalcraft. Presenting easy-to-follow and complete instructions on pages opposite to carefully executed drawings and diagrams, he makes it possible for anyone to learn the basics of this art form and to fashion objects which are at once beautiful and useful, and which display the individual expressiveness of the maker. Beginning with fundamentals, the author lists and pictures all of the necessary tools and carefully explains basic techniques for cutting stock, annealing and heating, pickling, shallow hollowing, raising, planishing, bending and shaping, leveling, soldering and welding, making molds, pattern making, and all of the steps and processes in the fine art of chasing. There follows a series of specific projects for making candlesticks, coasters, fluted platters and bowls, beakers, pitchers, serving trays, lamps, and a host of other articles in a wide variety of designs. A selection of thumbnail sketches for further exploration is included, and complete instructions are given for finishing and oxidation. The compact and graphic method of presentation makes this an extremely handy book, and the projects contained in it will engage the accomplished craftsman as well as the amateur. The approach is consistently from the craftworker's point of view, and the description of workshop methods are clear and direct and result from the author's lifelong experience in actual work and in instruction.

Book The Craftsman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Sennett
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2009-02-05
  • ISBN : 0141919418
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book The Craftsman written by Richard Sennett and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2009-02-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people work hard, and take pride in what they do? This book, a philosophically-minded enquiry into practical activity of many different kinds past and present, is about what happens when people try to do a good job. It asks us to think about the true meaning of skill in the 'skills society' and argues that pure competition is a poor way to achieve quality work. Sennett suggests, instead, that there is a craftsman in every human being, which can sometimes be enormously motivating and inspiring - and can also in other circumstances make individuals obsessive and frustrated. The Craftsman shows how history has drawn fault-lines between craftsman and artist, maker and user, technique and expression, practice and theory, and that individuals' pride in their work, as well as modern society in general, suffers from these historical divisions. But the past lives of crafts and craftsmen show us ways of working (using tools, acquiring skills, thinking about materials) which provide rewarding alternative ways for people to utilise their talents. We need to recognise this if motivations are to be understood and lives made as fulfilling as possible.

Book Portraits of the American Craftsman

Download or read book Portraits of the American Craftsman written by Tadd Myers and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stunning..." - Parade Magazine"A rare pictorial journey across America." - Bookpage Portraits of the American Craftsman is a collection of portraits of the people and products made in small workshops all over the country, with lyrical descriptions of what they make, who they are, and the tradition embedded in their trade. This book is a celebration of the handmade at a time when it’s being embraced by a new generation of DIY and local-focused consumers who are averse to the mass-produced. Award-winning photographer Tadd Myers is four years into a cross-country journey to capture images of the American craftsman engaged in his work. At a time when the public is growing disenchanted by the disposable items that litter the American landscape, the workers in Tadd’s portraits are still using human eyes to guide human hands; the objects they make carry the souls of their makers. His beautifully rendered photographs and profiles celebrate the thriving American culture of true craftsmanship, which is alive and well in all parts of the country: from the Steinway factory in Queens, NY to hatmakers in Tennessee; from a carousel works shop in Ohio to guitar makers in Texas; from hatmakers in Chicago to boatbuilders in Vermont. In the connected realm of photo-rich social media platforms such as Pinterest and Etsy, and in reaction to the mammoth corporations that create and sell us our wares, we’re seeing a boom of Americans of all ages re-evaluating the values that actually inspire them. Away from these conglomerates, the American craftsman keeps a different, more personal kind of work alive – work that is uniquely inspirational and genuine.
