Book Woman s Weekly and Lower Middle Class Domestic Culture in Britain 1918 1958

Download or read book Woman s Weekly and Lower Middle Class Domestic Culture in Britain 1918 1958 written by Eleanor Reed and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique intersection between periodical and literary scholarship, and class and gender history, this book showcases a brand-new approach to surveying a popular domestic magazine. Reading Woman’s Weekly alongside titles including Good Housekeeping, My Weekly, Peg’s Paper and Woman’s Own, and works by authors including Dot Allan, E.M. Delafield, George Orwell and J.B. Priestley, it positions the publication within both the contemporary magazine market and the field of literature more broadly, redrawing the parameters of that field as it approaches the domestic magazine as a literary genre in its own right. Between 1918 and 1958, Woman’s Weekly targeted a lower middle-class readership: broadly, housewives and unmarried clerical workers on low incomes, who viewed or aspired to view themselves as middle-class. Examining the magazine’s distinctively lower middle-class treatment of issues including the First World War’s impact on gender, the status of housewives and working women, women’s contribution to the Second World War effort, and Britain’s post-war economic and social recovery, this book supplies fresh and challenging insights into lower middle-class culture, during a period in which Britain’s lower middle classes were gaining prominence, and middle-class lifestyles were undergoing rapid and radical change.

Download or read book Evidence and the Archive written by Katherine Biber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores the stakes, risks and opportunities invoked in opening and exploring law’s archive and re-examining law’s evidence. It draws together work exploring how evidence is used or mis-used during the legal process, and re-used after the law’s work has concluded by engaging with ethical, aesthetic or emotional dimensions of using law’s evidence. Within socio-legal discourse, the move towards ‘open justice’ has emerged concurrently with a much broader cultural sensibility, one that has been called the "archival turn" (Ann Laura Stoler), the "archival impulse" (Hal Foster) and "archive fever" (Jacques Derrida). Whilst these terms do not describe exactly the same phenomena, they collectively acknowledge the process by which we create a fetish of the stored document. The archive facilitates our material confrontation with history, historicity, order, linearity, time and bureaucracy. For lawyers, artists, journalists, publishers, curators and scholars, the document in the archive has the attributes of authenticity, contemporaneity, and the unique tangibility of a real moment captured in material form. These attributes form the basis for the strict interpretive limits imposed by the rules of evidence and procedure. These rules do not contain the other attributes of the archival document, those that make it irresistible as the basis for creative work: beauty, violence, surprise, shame, volume, and the promise that it contains a tantalising secret. This book was previously published as a special issue of Australian Feminist Law Journal.

But the story behind the tabloid headlines reveals itself to be complex and ambiguous, provoking unsettling questions that echo across the decades to the present day. Handsome Bruteis both an examination of the age of austerity, and a real-life thriller as shocking and provocative as American Psycho or The Killer Inside Me, exploring the perspectives of the women in Heath's life - his wife, his mother, his lovers - and his victims. This collage of experiences from the women who knew him intimately probes the schism at the heart of his fascinating, chilling personality.

Book A Tale of Two Murders Guilt Innocence and the Execution of Edith Thompson

Download or read book A Tale of Two Murders Guilt Innocence and the Execution of Edith Thompson written by Laura Thompson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of the notorious “Ilford murder” by the New York Times bestselling author of The Six The death penalty is never without its ethical conflicts or moral questions. Never more so than when the person being led to the gallows may very well be innocent of the actual crime, if not innocent according social concepts of femininity. A Tale of Two Murders is an engrossing examination of the Ilford murder, which became a legal cause ce´le`bre in the 1920s, and led to the hanging of Edith Thompson and her lover, Freddy Bywaters. On the night of October 3, 1922, as Edith and her husband, Percy, were walking home from the theatre, a man sprang out of the darkness and stabbed Percy to death. The assailant was none other than Bywaters. When the police discovered his relationship with Edith, she—who had denied knowledge of the attack—was arrested as his accomplice. Her passionate love letters to Bywaters, read out at the ensuing trial, sealed her fate, even though Bywaters insisted Edith had no part in planning the murder. They were both hanged. Freddy was demonstrably guilty; but was Edith truly so? In shattering detail and with masterful emotional insight, Laura Thompson charts the course of a liaison with thrice-fatal consequences, and investigates what a troubling case tells us about perceptions of women, innocence, and guilt.
