This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messages of the Men and Religion Movement, Vol. 1 of 7 If anything was needed to impart a deep note of seriousness to the Christian Conservation Congress of the Men and Religion Forward Movement, which met in Carnegie Hall, New York, April 19-24, the Titanic disaster would have supplied it. The solemnity which all the world felt because of this tragedy was intensified for the delegates to the Congress by the consciousness that in their representative capacity they were concerned with the affairs of two worlds; the social order that now is, and the life beyond, which stalks so close to the life that now is. In this spirit it was inevitable that the great issues of humanity and eternity should be faced. There was an oft-expressed and all-pervading sense that the present is a time of crisis in this western world, and indeed throughout the whole earth. The industrial and commercial, the social and political and religious problems that teem in our day were driven home one after the other to the delegates, but always with the assurance that the last word for their solution remains with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Congress was a gathering of statesmen. The quality was higher even than the enthusiastic friends of the Congress had expected. Book Religion Among American Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book Religion Among American Men Classic Reprint written by Committee on the War and the Re Outlook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion Among American Men There is one generalization, in particular, which the evidence in hand makes it necessary to record - the wide spread ignorance on elementary religious matters even of those who professed to be Church members. Perhaps the one exception was among the Roman Catholics. Such a condition as revealed constitutes a grave indictment against the Churches. They have not been true to their teaching commission. It certainly calls for a careful revision of the pulpit message. Christian instruction is our first duty, and on its success depends the effectiveness of exhortation. It has been offered as an objection to this report that it is too gloomy, too pessimistic in tone, offering too little encouragement, and that it may be misleading and thus defeat its object. To this two things may be said. First, the value of such a report lies in its fidelity and honesty. It has not been tampered with nor colored. To the extent that it is true that it sounds pessimistic, it is a valid judgment on much present-day preaching and teaching of religion. We are worse than fools if we are to learn nothing from the war, and if men did not find their faith all we have a right to expect faith to be when shells are exploding and men dying by the thousands, we need not so much examine our faith itself as the form in which we have been expressing it and teaching it. No doctrine of importance can be transferred in a matured shape into any man's understanding from without: it must arise by an act of genesis within the understanding itself." - De Quincey. Book Introducing Men to Christ

Download or read book Introducing Men to Christ written by W. D. Weatherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introducing Men to Christ: Fundamental Studies There is a very great need to-day that men shall be brought to feel that religion is not a thing apart, that it is knit up with the ordinary processes of Our lives. We need to see that being religious is not having some vague, mysti cal experience, but living a life of real friendship. Perhaps as never before men are coming to realize that Christian life is not abnormal, but the most completely normal. In this life we use the same powers of personality which we use in our ordinary friendships, the sole difference being that in this God friendship we are associated with a perfect and full personality; while in all other friendships we are associated with incomplete and partial persons like our selves. This makes a difference in the intensity and mean ing of our friendship, but no difference as to kind. Further, there is a need to quiet the minds of some who seem to think psychology is putting God out of the work ings of the human soul. A few year ago, when evolution was in the enthusiastic flush of a new discovery, many of its advocates and still more of the Christian people thought it was destined to explain away God's working in the universe of physical nature. But we have long Since ceased to feel that evolution is Opposed to religion. It claims to be only a theory of the method of creation; and if it can and does reveal to us the method by which God works, we may well rejoice in this new light, which is essentially religious. Book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint written by Cleland Boyd Mcafee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the New Day This is not a reconstruction of theology but a plea for that work and some suggestion of a few typical points where it is needed and opportune. A teacher of theology shrinks a bit when it is said that the day for theology is over; he is apt to think in stead that the day has just come for vital religion which will mean a vital theology. But such a teacher knows well that theology can be devitalized by mistaking its own expressions for the truth it is trying to express. Visitors to theological seminaries often tell young men they are not to preach their theology, Whereas in any sound way of speaking it is the only thing they are to preach. Yet the most deadly thing that could be preached is a theology that does not carry the message of religion for its own day. The appeal herein is not to technical theologians but to working ministers and thoughtful laymen who, after all, build and use. The theology that is living and who sometimes fear to see it change. The great days just passed have given many of us a renewed assurance that Christianity is more vital and forceful than it has been for many a long day. Its vitality may well claim the right to phrase itself anew - which means to reconstruct theology at any point where it may need reconstructing. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wherin Have We Robbed Malachi's Message to the Men of Today The finest literature the world has produced, apart from the literature of the Bible, while it will remain interesting for long years - even though the conditions of the age to which it appealed may have changed - will not have a living and practical application to any age save that in which it was penned. The writings of Chaucer are of absorbing interest to English men to-day, because they reveal to us the age in which they were produced, but they have no vital message to the men of today. In that particular, this whole Book of God is in entire contrast to all other writings. All Scripture written aforetime had a local ap plication, and a distinctive message to the times in which it was written, but it was writ ten also for our learning. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messages of the Men and Religion Movement, Vol. 5 of 7 The literature on work with boys has grown so rapidly of late, that any additional book on the subject, even though like the present one it be the report of a Commission expressly appointed to investigate the "Boy Problem," re quires some introductory word of explanation, almost of justification. The Commission found very early in its work, that of excellent books and articles on special aspects of boy life, and on particular methods and organizations for work with boys, there is assuredly no lack. The characteristics and laws of a boy's religious or intellectual or physical nature, the essential principles of successful work with boys, the detailed methods by which a patrol of Boy Scouts or a castle of the Knights of King Arthur or a summer camp may be organized and conducted, - these and many other aspects of our general subject have been abundantly and adequately discussed in many articles and numerous books and pamphlets. To add another to these there was no need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Social Message of Our Lord Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Message of Our Lord Classic Reprint written by William Melvin Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Message of Our Lord He functions in their faculties and lives through them in-to the complex whole of the city's life. There is weakness here in the religious body, and there is tremendous strength after its kind 1n the people of the world. But new moral life 15 gener ating in the city and flowing in the channels of the public life. Some evils are going up to judgment, and we trust to a last judgment. San Francisco's greatest need. In this intense and vital day is for a man, a prophet of the new order, to interpret more fully the fundamental truths and principles of God into the conscious life of the-city. He must spell it out with a long patience; he must say it so that men with their backs turned shall be startled by its moral demand. The man who can interpret gospel truth into the world's new conditions, experiences, and fellowships is the evangelist the multitudes are asking for to-day. In this regard Bishop Bell's book has a great mission and a great field. The author is a prophet of the new order. He has seen the vision and felt the power. He here tells us how it is that all social wrong passes under effectual eclipse, and how all social righteousness reigns unto the victory of life. God, indwelling his people, must fail of his whole purpose through them, or he will ultimately elevate and energize society with the life of heaven. A new light is breaking over Christendom. In this light we are getting a new vision of men and social relations, obligations, and destinies. All things are being reappraised and set at new values. Things are falling in the scale; the humanities are rising in the estimate. The constructive factor of this new era is conscience, hence there is vital assertion of practical righteousness in all affairs. God is in conscience asserting that righteousness. He is laying a blight upon selfishness and is causing sympathy to burst into flower. The Social Message of Our Lord has par-t in the illumination of our social problems and our social progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message and the Man: Some Essentials of Effective Preaching Now, we are of those who, while trying to look facts in the face, endeavour, also, not to see double and to keep heart of hope. It is easy to make too much of statistics, and very easy, in a moment of depression, to come to conclusions concerning the state of the Church, and the life of the world, which a day of brighter and truer mood will greatly modify. There is no cause for either panic or pessimism, but there is cause for the asking of questions as to reasons for the condition of things, for the making of suggestions for their improvement. Download or read book Jesus in the Experience of Men Classic Reprint written by T. R. Glover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus in the Experience of Men One of the parables of Jesus turns on the ferment of leaven in a mass of meal - a vivid forecast of his own effect on the minds of men. He found a world full of established ideas, heirlooms of a great and progressive past, and the immediate effect of his coming was a struggle between inheritance and experience. It was said to them of old time; but I say unto you. The minds of most of us are like palimpsests written over and over again; here the latest notion stands out in the new est script, but between the letters are to be found traces of ideas much older, obliterated but legible; there the old is almost untouched, but the closer observer finds hints of a later hand. Every great thinker sets men re writing these palimpsests, and it is long before it is com pletely achieved; and often by that time a new story is being superimposed on the corrected page. Jesus had the same material to work upon as every great teacher, and his work was done in the same way, on the same terms, and With the same result in the clash of old and new. He has reacted on mankind, as we all know; he has transformed their ideas, blotted out old preconceptions and convictions, and through experience brought men to a new set of principles; but the process has been long and slow. It is not as if men had really known at first what he meant and what his principles involved or, indeed, guessed how much his personality was to signify. It is easy to talk of his disciples taking the Christian message to the world; but when we begin to consider what this meant.
