Download or read book Shakespeare s Merry Wives of Windsor 1602 Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor, 1602 The following entries relating to the Merry Wives appear on the Registers of the Stationers Company: 18 Ianuarij [1602] ... John Busby Entred for his copie vnder the hand of master Seton /A booke called An excellent and pleasant conceited commedie of Sir Iohn ffaulstof and the merry wyves of Windesor Arthure Iohnson Entred for his Copye by assignement from John Busbye, A booke Called an excellent and pleasant conceyted Comedie of Sir Iohn ffaulstafe and the merye wyves of Windsor ... I do not propose to discuss in this place the significance of the transactions here recorded, since to do so at all adequately would involve a considerable excursion into a difficult region of Shakespearian bibliography. Suffice it to say that while the entry implies that the publication of the play was in more or less immediate projection, the transfer does not imply, as some have thought, that publication had already taken place. It followed, however, with no long delay, for the date 1602 on the title-page of the quarto shows that the volume was issued in any case before 25 March 1603, most probably before the end of December 1602. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's: Comedy of the Merry Wives of Windsor A second quarto was published in 1619. These edi tions appear to be a pirated version of the play as first written, probably in 1599. This early sketch was afterward revised and enlarged to about twice the original length and this is the form in which it appears in the folio of 1623. Internal evi dence Shows that this revision was made after James came to the throne, and probably about 1605. In i. 1. 110 king is substituted for the council of the quarto. These knights will hack, in ii. I. 50, is sup posed to allude to the 237 knights created by James in 1603. When the court lay at Windsor, in ii. 2. 62, may refer to July, 1603 the court was usually held at Greenwich in the winter. The mention of coach after coach, in ii. 2. 66, is not likely to have been made much before coaches came into general use, which, according to Howe's Continuation of St'owe's was in 1605. Outrun on Gotsall, i. I. 89, appears to allude to the reviving of the Cotswold games about 1603. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The First Sketch of Shakespeare s Merry Wives of Windsor Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Sketch of Shakespeare s Merry Wives of Windsor Classic Reprint written by James Orchard Halliwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Sketch of Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor When I first communicated the design which I had of altering this comedy of Shakespear, I found that I should have two sorts of people to deal with, who would equally endeavour to obstruct my success. The one believed it to be so admirable, that nothing ought to be added to it; the others fancied it to be so despicable, that any one's time would be lost upon it. That this comedy was not despi cable. I gosse'd for several reasons; First, I knew very well that it had pleas'd one of the greatest queens that ever was in the world, great not only for her wisdom in the arts of government, but for her knowledge of polite learning, and her nice taste of the drama, for such a taste we may be sure she had, by the relish which she had of the ancients. T7iis comedy was written at her command, and by her direction, and she was so eager to see it acted, that she commanded it to be finished in fourteen days and was afterwards, as tradition tells us, very well pleas'd at the representation. In the second place, in the reign of King Charles the Second, when people had an admirable taste of comedy, all those men of extraordinary parts, who were the ornaments of that court, as the late Duke of Buckingham, my Lord Normandy, my Lord Dorset, my late Lord Rochester, Sir Charles Sidley, Dr. Frazer, Mr. Savil, Mr. Buckley, were in love with the beauties of this comedy. In the third place, I thought that after so long an acquaintance as I had with the best comic poets, among the ancients and moderns, I might depend in some measure upon my own judgment, and I thought I found here three or four extraordi nary characters, that were exactly drawn, and truly comical; and that I saw besides in it some as happy touches as ever were in comedy. Besides I had observed what success the character of Fal staff had had in the First Part of Harry the Fourth.' And as the Falstaff in the Merry Wives' is certainly superior to that of the Second Part of Harry the Fourth, ' so it can hardly be said to be inferior to that of the First.
