Book The Mercury Woden Complex

Download or read book The Mercury Woden Complex written by Gardenstone and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was about two thousand years ago the Roman historian Tacitus reported the Germanics venerated Mercury above all. He meant a Germanic God he equated with Mercury. Because Tacitus didn't denominate the name of that God, it had to be interpreted. Many centuries later scholars widely agreed that the name of this God must be Woden. Today that opinion is still taken as evidence. This assumption is assayed here on the basis of available primary sources - the result suggests serious doubts about the entrenched view. This book requires the willingness to leave comfortable and well-traveled, often-repeated views to examine unbiasedly apparent 'self-evidence facts'.

Book A Jewish Guide to the Mysterious

Download or read book A Jewish Guide to the Mysterious written by Rabbi Pinchas Taylor and published by Mosaica Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern science is the most accurate lens of reality that humanity has developed so far. Science is crucial to humanity’s health, safety, and development. Still, the lens of science only “sees” a thin slice of the totality of existence. Much of the human experience cannot be simply explained by standard quantifiable tests. Many people have become aware of the limits and shortcomings of scientific knowledge and have also realized that our perpetual hunger for spiritual understanding is real and undeniable. Many of us sense that there is something beyond. Throughout various periods of history and various cultures and societies, people have been interested in the mysterious and the paranormal. This yearning is rooted in the soul’s search for true spirituality. A Jewish Guide to the Mysterious, written by one of contemporary Judaism’s leading scholars and teachers, clearly explains classic Torah views on intriguing phenomena, such as dreams, astrology, time travel, alien life, reincarnation, ESP and auras, angels, demons, ghosts, and even such topics as the lost city of Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle. Read this fascinating book and be amazed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In western astrology we use of course Roman names for the planetary symbols; but when you look on the mythological explanations, you usually get Greek mythology to explain them. Doesn't count: NOMEN EST OMEN ? Searching the mythological rests of the original deities Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturnus it was necessesary to dive deeply into the history of theology because the well-known literates like Ovid, Virgil and Lucretius preferred to retell Greek myths instead of preserving their own roots. In the last centuries (until about 1900) these authors werde taken as sources for theological research and there was no discrimination between literature/poetry and original italic tradition. Perspective and moral view of the 19th century added more misinterpretations and made the knowledge of Roman religion almost vanish. Existing rests are collected in this book and compared with the actual astrological symbols. So the reader can recognize how much of Roman ideas can be found in the planetary symbols nowadays. Simultaneously new points of view are opened for the interpretation of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Book Columbanus and the Peoples of Post Roman Europe

Download or read book Columbanus and the Peoples of Post Roman Europe written by Alexander O'Hara and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period 550 to 750 was one in which monastic culture became more firmly entrenched in Western Europe. The role of monasteries and their relationship to the social world around them was transformed during this period as monastic institutions became more integrated in social and political power networks. This collected volume of essays focuses on one of the central figures in this process, the Irish ascetic exile and monastic founder, Columbanus (c. 550-615), his travels on the Continent, and the monastic network he and his Frankish disciples established in Merovingian Gaul and Lombard Italy. The post-Roman kingdoms through which Columbanus travelled and established his monastic foundations were made up of many different communities of peoples. As an outsider and immigrant, how did Columbanus and his communities interact with these peoples? How did they negotiate differences and what emerged from these encounters? How societies interact with outsiders can reveal the inner workings and social norms of that culture. This volume aims to explore further the strands of this vibrant contact and to consider all of the geographical spheres in which Columbanus and his monastic communities operated (Ireland, Merovingian Gaul, Alamannia, Lombard Italy) and the varieties of communities he and his successors came in contact with - whether they be royal, ecclesiastic, aristocratic, or grass-roots.

Book The Nerthus Claim

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gardenstone
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 3842351267
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book The Nerthus Claim written by Gardenstone and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly any other scripture from the time of the Roman Empire of about two thousand years ago has stirred up so much excited attention as the "Germania" of Tacitus. Only from this ethnographic essay do we know the name Nerthus, a goddess who should have been venerated by seven smaller Germanic tribes. Much of what the "Germania" tells us is meanwhile highly doubted. The 1st century original no longer exists; the intact copies were on their part copied from older "Germania" texts, which were also just copies. The existing copies are not identical to each other. That causes many question marks, which also concern this goddess Nerthus. This book is an attempt to place some exclamation marks in front of that, and is sometimes deliberately provocative.

Book Conversion Among the Germanic Peoples

Download or read book Conversion Among the Germanic Peoples written by Carole M. Cusack and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-11-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the process of conversion among the Germanic peoples from the third to eleventh centuries. The intention is twofold: firstly, to examine previous scholarship on conversion and to develop a model of conversion appropriate to the Germanic peoples; and secondly, to produce a comparative study of six Germanic conversions. Chapter 1 reviews the existing models of conversion developed by scholars in a number of fields, principally psychology, anthropology and religious studies, and develops an alternative model. Chapters 2-7 are case studies which apply this model to the conversions of the Goths, Franks, Anglo-Saxons, continental Saxons, Scandinavians and Icelanders. The final chapter presents in summary form the insights from the case studies.
