Wiola's mother tells her that killing spiders brings on storms. Wiola must never enter the seamstress's 'secret' room. Wiola collects matchbox labels. Wiola is a good Catholic girl brought up with fables and nurtured on superstition. Wiola lives in a Poland that is both very recent and lost in time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, humans have been engaged in a continual quest to find meaning in and make sense of sights and events in the night sky. Cultures spread around the world recorded their earliest efforts in artwork made directly on the natural landscapes around them, and from there they developed more and more sophisticated techniques for observing and documenting astronomy. This book brings readers on an astronomical journey through the ages, offering a history of how our species has recorded and interpreted the night sky over time. From cave art to parchment scribe to modern X-ray mapping of the sky, it chronicles the ever-quickening development of tools that informed and at times entirely toppled our understanding of the natural world. Our documentation and recording techniques formed the bedrock for increasingly complex forays into astronomy and celestial mechanics, which are addressed within these chapters. Additionally, the book explores how nature itself has recorded the skies in its own way, which can be unraveled through ongoing geological and archaeological studies. This tale of human discovery and ingenuity over the ages will appeal to anybody interested in the field of astronomy and its rich cultural history.

Book excerpt: Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature. Mercury’s chemical symbol is Hg. The “Hg” comes from the Greek word hydrargyrum, which means “liquid silver.” Because of its silvery appearance and the way it moves, the metal was also called quicksilver. In fact, the chemical is named for the Roman god, Mercury, who was known for his speed and mobility. Students learn about the sources of mercury and its effects on the environment (coal-burning power plants are responsible for nearly 40 percent of the human-caused mercury emissions in the United States). They learn about mercury’s chemical properties and classification as a transition metal. Mercury’s place on the periodic table and its subatomic particles are also discussed. Readers will study mercury ions and isotopes. The book also explains the element’s applications in thermometers, thermostats, silent wall switches, fluorescent lights, and dental amalgams.

Book A New Look at Mercury Retrograde

Download or read book A New Look at Mercury Retrograde written by Robert Wilkinson and published by Fifth Ray Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone involved in communications can attest to periods of time--lasting about three weeks, three to four times a year--when even the most simple messages seem to be wildly misinterpreted. Also during this time, mechanical and electronic things tend to break down "out of the blue." An astrologer will tell you that this happens when Mercury is retrograde--a phenomenon that almost everyone's heard of but nobody really understands. Robert Wilkinson offers the inside scoop on Mercury retrograde, teaching you how to play it to your own advantage. He also offers ways to value Mercury retrograde people, projects, and situations to make the best of Mercury retrograde energies. For astrologers, Wilkinson describes a wide variety of ways a retrograde Mercury may manifest for each sign, and provides lists of characteristics showing how the energy "behaves" in the signs and houses in natal, progressed, return, and transit charts. Wilkinson helps the rest of us understand why people born during a Mercury retrograde think and act the way they do, and how to interact with them productively. And for celebrity hounds and history buffs, he includes a list of famous people born during Mercury retrograde; information about world events that occurred during Mercury retrogrades in the last 150 years (revealing some thought provoking patterns); and an ephemeris of Mercury retrograde periods for 1900-2035. This book will prove as relevant 50 years from now as it is today!

Book Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy

Download or read book Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy written by Paul G. Abel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of CCDs and webcams, the focus of amateur astronomy has to some extent shifted from science to art. Visual work in astronomy has a rich history. Today, imaging is now more prominent. However there is still much for the visual amateur astronomer to do, and visual work is still a valid component of amateur astronomy. Paul Abel has been addressing this issue by promoting visual astronomy wherever possible – at talks to astronomical societies, in articles for popular science magazines, and on BBC TV’s The Sky at Night. Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy is a comprehensive modern treatment of visual lunar and planetary astronomy, showing that even in the age of space telescopes and interplanetary probes it is still possible to contribute scientifically with no more than a moderately-priced commercially made astronomical telescope. It is believed that imaging and photography is somehow more objective and more accurate than the eye, and this has led to a peculiar “crisis of faith” in the human visual system and its amazing processing power. But by analyzing observations from the past, we can see how accurate visual astronomy really is! Measuring the rotational period of Mars and making accurate lunar charts for American astronauts were all done by eye. The book includes sections on how the human visual system works, how to view an object through an eyepiece, and how to record observations and keep a scientific notebook. The book also looks at how to make an astronomical, rather than an artistic, drawing. Finally, everything here will also be of interest to those imagers who wish to make their images more scientifically applicable by combining the methods and practices of visual astronomy with imaging.
